FREE: Standing cabinet of some sort. Actually pretty nice. 66” x 30”. Probably weighs around 70 pounds. One thing to note is that the fold down portion seems stuck. Could be the wood has swelled over the years. Since we were passing this on we decided not to try and force it and possibly damage it.

I don’t think this is some Antiques Roadshow score so I would hope that whomever asks after it both needs and wants this for their place.

Maybe would be good to hear from folks why they’re interested so it ends up in the hands of someone that will give it a nice new life as a functional piece of furniture.

Li’l Abner Musical Presented by Nestucca High School

During mid-May Nestucca High School students will present the musical Li’l Abner for a week of performances in the gym of Nestucca High School.
On Wednesday, May 18th community members are invited to attend the performance beginning at 11am. Admission to this performance is $5 for general seating. Senior citizens will be honored special reserve seating at the general admission price in the front three rows for this performance only on a first come, first serve basis. Light refreshments will be served to patrons at this performance.
Additional shows will be held on Saturday, May 21 at 7pm and Sunday, May 22 at 2pm. A limited number of front row reserve seating tickets are available for $10 each and can be reserved in advance by calling 503-392-3194 ext 230. General admission is $8 for ages 11 to adult and $5 for senior citizens and youth ages 10 and under.
Many will remember the comic strip Li’l Abner by Al Capp. The musical is based on the story within the comic strip, and is a comedy set in the hillbilly town of Dogpatch, USA. The Sadie Hawkins Day Race is set to happen, whereupon a girl who catches her man gets to marry him. Daisy Mae hopes to catch Abner, but the Yokumberry Tonic Mammy makes him drink every day which makes him strong also apparently makes him rather “neutral” when it comes to matters of the heart.
Nestucca High School is well-known for its tradition of putting on spring musicals. The first musical produced in the Nestucca community was 60 years ago with Mack Pimentel directing. One of Mack’s own students, Kathleen (Schenck) Serven, took over as director in 1997 when he retired. She and other drama directors helping her have kept the musical tradition alive every spring, all except the last two years, due to the pandemic. Assisting Kathleen this year is Heidi Trambley as Assistant Director and piano accompanist, Kelli McMellon as drama director, and Christal Winesburgh as Serven’s Co-Director in the orchestra pit.
Nestucca musicals feature a community orchestra, put together with musicians from Waldport to Rockaway Beach and out to Hillsboro. The orchestra meets every Sunday for two months to prepare for the show.
This year’s musical stars Junior Lionel Brown as Abner, Senior Tessa Thompson as Daisy Mae, Junior Henry Cook as Marryin’ Sam, Sophomore AJ Johns as Mammy Yokum, Alinna Mendoza as Pappy Yokum, and Senior Dennis Jaynes as Earthquake. Junior Liz Chez and Senior Yaky Gracia co-manage the stage.
Come and enjoy the show with us, have some laughs, and support our local musical theater students in their first musical in two years. Don’t miss it!

GOOD NEWS: There are lots of baby trees. They need homes ASAP.

These 12″+ babes can be potted, or planted. Plan to water them during dry spells for a couple of years.

Trees are leftover donations from Natural Resource Conservation Services (NRCS).

“The best time to plant a tree was 25 years ago, the second best is today.”

They can be found at the bottom of steps to Pauseful Massage & Botanicals. Take some for you, & pass some on to friends.

Keep them moist and out of direct sun until you pot or plant them.

Beginners Workshop

Chuck Winkelman will be teaching another stained-glass workshop in May sponsored by The Hoffman Center. This is a beginning class and plans are in the works for an advanced class later.

Classes are conducted in Winkelman’s garage workshop in Manzanita, where students can take advantage of his extensive tools and equipment. The class size is limited to eight students. The class begins with an introduction to tools, the selection of designs and layout, cutting boards, and glass cutting. Chuck provides a number of window templates from which the beginner can choose.

Registration is limited to vaccinated students
Bring proof of vaccination to the first day of class
Masks are optional

Here’s the re-cap:
I am needing to replace the BALI blind arrangement in this window. Ideally it would be EXACTLY the same (103 inch headrail – “two-on-one” design – the individual shades are 61-1/2 tall and 50-1/2 wide – color is an off-white now as they have been up about three years) – but it would be OK to have the same length headrail with just ONE long shade.
I have turned over every reasonable stone to buy a brand-new arrangement – but in the event someone knows where there is a used one – OR – a terrific outlet for dated shades like this (it still has to be Bali)
I would like to know – the sooner the better…THANKS! jw

Eileen Hallee

Eileen Hallee
May 20, 1944 – March 27, 2022

Former Manzanita resident Lois Eileen Hallee died March 27, 2022, at age 77 in the presence of family at a care center in Portland.

Born May 20, 1944, Eileen was well-known for her goal of having a Manzanita bush planted on every lot along Manzanita Avenue. Another of her worthy goals was seeing that stray cats were spayed or neutered.

Eileen spent much of her life taking care of Tom, her marathon-running, physician husband. In doing so, she attended hundreds of runs around the country and across the globe.

A service will be held in Eileen’s honor Saturday, May 7, from 2 to 4 p.m. at Sunset Hills Memorial Park in Portland.

Eileen’s family has requested friends pursue having a bench and accompanying Manzanita bush installed at an appropriate place in the City of Manzanita. Persons interested in helping with that effort are asked to contact Paula Peek at peek.paula1@gmail.com.
