North County Resistance Protest Saturday, August 16, Nehalem

Submitted By: pattyrinehart@nehalemtel.net – Click to email about this post
North County Resistance (NCR) extends our heartfelt thanks to the 30-plus individuals who joined us in Nehalem this past Saturday. The energy was uplifting and positive—many participants noted their appreciation for the 1.5-hour duration, especially with the challenging heat. Thanks to your support, we were able to deliver over 100 pounds of food to the North County Food Bank last month, demonstrating the power of community action.

NCR is often asked: What are we protesting? Here’s a clearer explanation of the issues we’re standing against—each one represents a significant threat to our democracy:

Manipulating Electoral Maps: Redrawing voting districts to favor specific political outcomes undermines fair representation for all citizens.

Rolling Back Civil Rights: Efforts to weaken protections for marginalized groups erode the fundamental liberties that form the foundation of our democracy.

Mass Deportations: Forcing large numbers of individuals and families to leave their homes tears apart communities and disregards basic human rights.

Slashing Health Care: Reducing access to essential health services puts vulnerable populations at risk and increases inequality.

Slashing Education: Cutting funding for public education limits opportunities for young people and jeopardizes our shared future.

Intimidation of Dissent: Threatening or silencing those who disagree stifles free speech and open debate, which are vital to a healthy society.

Billionaires vs. the People: Policies favoring the ultra-wealthy over the needs of ordinary citizens deepen social and economic divides.

Our next protest will take place in Nehalem on Saturday, from noon to 2 pm. Everyone is welcome—your voice and presence make a difference!

We continue to have the means to transport food or monetary donations to the North County Food Bank. Be as generous as you can. If you would like to donate food or funds, please contact us at or bring items to our next event. Together, we can make a tangible impact in our community.

Thanks,
Patty

United Paws’ Kittens of the Week: Sully and Simon

Submitted By: website@unitedpaws.org – Click to email about this post
Meet Sully and Simon, United Paws’ Kittens of the Week. These brothers were abandoned, rescued by United Paws, and fostered in a loving home.

Simon and Sully will fit beautifully in a home with children or other pets.  They have no hesitation playing with the foster’s small dog and children. Although they are curious and unafraid, they know when to back off if an older cat or dog is not in the mood for play.

These two love to play, chase, jump, and climb towers.  Their world is filled with curious objects and they consider everything a toy! A box, a string, or balls of paper will entertain Simon and Sully for hours.

Right now, Simon and Sully have two speeds: stop and go, but they are learning to snuggle with their humans. These kittens will bring love, entertainment and fun to a family of their own, and they are ready to find a loving home.

To learn more, please visit unitedpaws.org or call 503-842-5663/email unitedpawsapps@gmail.com.

Elections

Submitted By: Keeks54@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
Free and fair elections are the cornerstone of democracy – but they require investment. In 2020, Congress appropriated $825 million to help states run secure, accessible elections. For 2025, that number has dropped to just $15 million – or less than $300,000 per state. That’s not enough to ensure safe, reliable, and equitable elections for millions of voters.

Across the country, local election officials are being asked to do more with less. They’re facing a perfect storm of challenges: Aging infrastructure, including decades-old voting machines, shortages of trained poll workers, disinformation and declining public trust, cybersecurity threats, physical threats to election workers, and new restrictive laws that make election administration more complex and costly.

At the same time, restrictions on third-party support and the elimination of key federal resources, including the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) election security programs, have left many local offices with fewer tools than ever. This funding gap creates deep inequities. Wealthier communities can often fund election upgrades through local revenue. But rural areas and lower-income jurisdictions are left behind – making our elections less accessible and less secure.

Election funding has historically enjoyed bipartisan support, and recent polling shows that nearly 70% of Americans believe the federal government should play a stronger role in election funding. This is not a partisan issue – it’s about safeguarding our democracy and ensuring that every American can vote without barriers.
I urge you to contact your members of Congress and ask them to support restoring election security grants to at least $825 million for FY26 and commit to consistent federal investment in the years to come.

Thank you for your attention to this vital issue.
