Glass Preserving Jars from IKEA

Submitted By: mica.f.russo@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
Selling glass preserving jars from IKEA. The jars are glass with stainless steel hinges and natural rubber gaskets to make airtight seals.

I have nine shorter jars (I’m almost positive that they hold 1.9 quarts / 60 oz).

I have six tall jars that hold 2.1 quarts / 67 oz. (www.ikea.com/us/en/p/korken-jar-with-lid-clear-glass-50227987/).

I’ve had these jars for two years and they’ve been great! I just don’t have a need for them anymore and our kitchen is quite small. Some jars were recently washed out; others are dry and empty but could use a rinse.

IKEA sells both sizes for $4.99. I’m happy to part with them $40 for all 15 jars. If I don’t get any takers for the lot, I can sell them individually for $3.50 each.

Thanks!

In response to Mr. Kugler on Public Record to Run On!

Submitted By: Tinnindeb@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
Mr. Kugler ran for Manzanita City Council November 2020. He placed fourth for the two open seats on Council. It was a close race, Mr. Kugler lost by 27 votes. Within a few days, Mr. Kugler wrote to local utility companies with a list of 27 Manzanita voters that he targeted as not being voters. He was asking for personal account information to show that we didn’t live in Manzanita. Mr. Kugler was attempting to use ORS 247.035 to prove we weren’t Manzanita voters.

Mr. Kugler says it’s not wrong in obtaining someone’s billing information. Really? Tillamook PUD said by subpoena only. The DMV Fraud Division was very responsive to inquiries on any attempt to obtain personal mailing details; they ran a check on my account. Manzanita Police Chief Harth did the same. DMV takes anyone attempting to access someone else’s data seriously.

I was one of those voters and I possess Mr. Kugler’s correspondence asking for my personal account details. I also possess all the correspondence filed with Tillamook County Clerk and the Oregon State Elections Office from Mr. Kugler and team.

How did Mr. Kugler determine that I was not a voter? I spend considerable time working at Aldercreek Farm every week. I assist with our local Food Bank. I sent out thank you membership letters for Friends of the Library and worked the book sale. I work with my local EVCNB cluster and volunteer for any EVCNB events. I have for years attended City Council meetings, the Planning Commission, STR workgroup, Budget Committee; it’s important to participate in my local government. This is where my home is.

Mr. Kugler says ORS 247.035 doesn’t care if you volunteer in your community. I care Mr. Kugler. It is part of my commitment to my community. According to Mr. Kugler it’s all about where your mail is sent. Mr. Kugler is living in the past, it’s online bill paying these days. Paperless billing.

Mr. Kugler accumulated information, much of it false, on the 27 voters and the information was distributed to the Tillamook County Clerk. In the end, all voters were exonerated. Mr. Kugler was dismayed that he was unable to change election results through his data gathering prior to the newly elected officials being sworn in.

In the November 2020 election, the state of Oregon had 140 election irregularities filed. 27 of those 140 were Manzanita.

Accusing your neighbors of voter fraud because they didn’t vote for you, is that adult behavior? Is that the behavior of a person running for office? How would you be trusted with more of my private information? Most of us had opposition signs in our yards so we were easy to pick off.

Mr. Kugler, I agree we need adults to govern. While you aren’t running in this election, you do want to be appointed to the Budget Committee. What should be the criteria of a good public servant? Working for all citizens, not a chosen few. Being trustworthy.

Your actions speak loudly Mr. Kugler.

In the upcoming election, I have to say that all of the Manzanita candidates running this time have put considerable work and time into their campaigns. They should all be commended for their efforts and I wish them all well.

Missing Kitty

Grateful Thanks from Bob & I to whomever delivered our deceased Lena the Kitty’s remains to the top of our driveway. We found her there yesterday.
Lena, born feral in the spring of 2008 and her brother Oscar came into our lives that summer thanks to United Paws, Tillamook Co.
The last time we saw Lena was early August. By mid September I finally accepted that she was never coming home.
We appreciate that we can finally say our good-byes and give her the respect she deserves.
Lena was a good sister to Oscar, a companion to some of our kitty progressive dogs ( we have been adopting Senior dogs for many years, so there have been several our cats have shared our home with), her pet sitter Auntie Ann and to us. Whether she was inside or out, she would come hug our legs to let us know she was there and wanted affection.
Lena was a cautious kitty, a fantastic hunter and a constant companion. Our home, property and likely a large portion of the neighborhood benefitted from her small rodent hunting skills.
We miss her.
Thank You,
Dee Koscheski

Mark Explains Why Manzanita Needs Revenue Diversification

Submitted By: MarkForCouncil2022@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
These three charts illustrate sharply how dependent Manzanita is on Transient Lodging Taxes (TLT) to fund our government expenses, in large part due to our very low property tax rate.

Figure 1 shows property tax rates for selected cities: all have higher property tax rates than Manzanita. Figure 2 shows how reliant Manzanita is on visitors to fund general government operations. Figure 3 shows all revenues for FY2021, highlighting how disproportionate the TLT component is.

Our City Manager has already addressed cost-recovery concerns for permits. She is now pursuing increasing System Development Charges (SDCs) for infrastructure as she explained in great detail at the “Envision Manzanita” session on August 28th. It’s worth listening to the presentation on the City’s website to learn more about this. (https://youtu.be/cN1eVZ0vG7w) The next Council will also need to work on detailed plans that will help the City charge appropriate fees to support maintenance (for example, a Transportation Plan that supports road maintenance fees).

If you elect me to Manzanita City Council, I will pursue alternative funding sources to lessen our financial dependence on visitors.

Linda Kozlowski Comments on Short Term Rentals

Submitted By: Linda.Kozlowski@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
Managing Short Term Rental I’m Linda Kozlowski and I’m running for re-election to the Manzanita City Council.

In 1998 under former City Manager Jerry Taylor, the City of Manzanita capped the number of Short Term Rentals (STR) at 17.5% of homes in residential zones. As our community has grown the number of STRs has also grown, especially in areas near the beach where STR density has affected neighborhood livability.

With the increasing number of visitors to our community, the Council established a STR Workgroup to identify key factors to address livability. The Workgroup did a survey, held public meetings, and engaged in discussions about how to best live comfortably with visitors in our neighborhoods. They made specific recommendations for managing noise, parking, overcrowded vacation rentals, and the response time for reported problems. The Council agreed with those recommendations and passed a major revision of the STR Ordinance 10-3 that provides the City with the tools to better manage STRs.

Ordinance 10-3: ci.manzanita.or.us/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/Ordinance-10-03-STR-regulations-revised-09.08.2021.pdf

Considering the need to balance management of STRs with the current importance of STR tax revenue to the City’s financial viability, the Council implemented the recommendation to form a STR standing committee, only the third standing committee in the City. The other two standing committees are the Planning Commission and the Budget Committee.

In the April 6th meeting this year, the Council placed a 36-month moratorium to cap new STR licenses (230) in the residential zones. We will continue to consider solutions to address STR density. The financial dilemma facing the City is that because we have almost the lowest tax rate in the state, the City receives less than $226,000 per year from our property taxes. In contrast, VISITORS contribute $1,200,000 in revenue (53% of the General Fund) by paying the STR tax.

It is vital for us to continue to manage STRs, knowing that this tourist lodging tax contributes significantly to our budget. A priority for the upcoming Council is to determine if there are other revenue sources that could lessen our reliance on STRs.

I feel strongly that STR management is vital for the livability of our community, and I look forward to continuing this important work. I am asking for your vote on November 8.

Rally THURSDAY to Protest Industrial Forestry Practices!

Submitted By: april.nccwp@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
Rally to Protest Industrial Forestry Practices: Seaside and Portland – Thursday, October 6, 2022 at 3:30 P.M.

Please join North Coast Communities for Watershed Protection Thursday, October 6, 2022 for a peaceful rally against Wall St. corporation-backed, destructive timber industry practices!

WHERE and WHEN:

On the coast – 3:30 p.m. at the Big Orange Chair (Hwy 101 and Broadway) at the Seaside Visitor’s Bureau

In Portland – 3:30 P.M. at South Hawthorne Waterfront Park for the march to S.W. Park & Montgomery for a rally at 4:30 P.M.

WHAT TO BRING: Water, sunscreen, good walking shoes, optional signs and banners)

WHY: TIAA and other Wall St. corporations are helping to bankroll the climate crisis through their funding of deforestation and fossil fuels. We are joining forces with Sun Rise Movement PDX, and other environment organizations in the Forest Climate Alliance to take a stand against the irresponsible industrial forestry practices (clearcutting followed by pesticide spraying) that are decimating Oregon’s forested watersheds. These practices are designed with the aim of maximum profit for Wall St. corporations (like TIAA and others) and providing payouts to corporate shareholders—who are invested in Oregon timber companies, like GreenWood Resources. The price of these practices is the health of our communities, and a liveable planet for future generations.

We hope to see you there!
With Love,

NCCWP

Council Candidate Mark Kuestner’s Public Record

Submitted By: rkinor@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
In August of 2020 while running for City Council, current Manzanita Council candidate Mark Kuestner advised me on a Facebook post to “Please withdraw from the Council race. Manzanita needs adults to govern.”
Mr. Kuestner’s plea stemmed from my concerns along with other citizens over the City Council’s conclusion that the City Manager and then Assistant City Manager were spending 50% of their time in supervisory and management activities of our Water utility and were thus entitled to take 50% of their respective salaries from the Water Operating Fund. Having been the Manzanita City Manager for 8 years, I was quite familiar with what the City Manager’s time commitments were in overseeing this service including the supervising of the Public Works Director and his staff. I suggested that a City Manager under the present organizational circumstances would be spending approximately 10 -12% of their time in this activity. This was and remains an important issue as every dollar that is taken from our Water Funds to pay City Hall staff salaries is one less dollar available to put into needed water construction projects.
At the May 2021 Budget Committee Hearing, interim City Manager John Kunkel when asked how much time in personnel management of water utility staff he and the Assistant City Manager perform, he responded that it was “a very small percentage.”When then asked how much time he estimated that he spent overall supervising water utility operations during the 8 months that he was employed by the City he stated “somewhere between 10 -15% of my time would be accurate”. Mr. Kuestner who claims that he has attended these Budget Committee meetings did not ask any questions to better understand the responsibilities of the City Manager regarding these activities. The fact that these conclusions so closely mirrored my observations from a year earlier apparently no longer held any interest for him.
While the above post can still be accessed, many of Mr. Kuestner’s past social media posts reacting to citizens who questioned how the Council during these past years was conducting our business seem to have disappeared. His campaign literature highlights his commitment to “respond with facts not feelings.” It would seem that in this instance, that commitment rings hollow.
I certainly would not advise Mr. Kuestner to withdraw from this race just because he has opinions that differ with mine. He does however have a record of public comments and connection to the support of the policies of this past Mayor and Council despite the facts that requires some explanations on his part.

Turn Off the Lights

Submitted By: lisaleestewart@comcast.net – Click to email about this post
Offensive Lighting:
Like many of you, we chose to retire here because of the healthy outdoors, to get away from crowds and traffic and bright lights, noise and pollution. We could walk everywhere, felt safe. We could sleep with our windows open, enjoying the fresh air and ocean noises. We could go to bed early and rise with the sunlight. We could sit in the dark out on our deck and enjoy the stars in the dark sky. It was peaceful and quiet. Our health improved as we settled into retirement and let go of the stress of working for the past 50 years. I used to think most people living in Manzanita felt the same about the peace and quiet and the dark night sky.
Unfortunately, the wonderful relaxing life style we believed in has been ruined by the uncaring attitude of people in power who fail to act and the selfishness of second home owners who care nothing about how they impact others who live here full time. The city refuses to step up because they don’t care. Oh, they enacted an ordinance to protect people from intrusive lighting from an STR but they didn’t bother to extend that protection to residents being assaulted by the exact same offensive and intrusive lighting from a second home owner. Why? It makes absolutely no sense and is discriminating against full time residents by denying us equal protection under the law. I was told by a city council member that the police were too busy to enforce anything so the city wouldn’t act to protect us. Wow. Apparently STRs are important to the city, but an individual homeowner’s right to the peaceful enjoyment of their own property is of no value to Manzanita and undeserving of any common decency or protection from harassment.
I want someone to explain to me the mentality of buying a second home in a very quiet, peaceful neighborhood and ignoring all that the neighborhood is and deciding it’s appropriate to turn the dark night off and put up and turn on all possible offensive lighting and keeping it all on 24 hours for days/weeks on end – even though you, the homeowner turning on those lights is not even present but at one of your other home(s). Why did you come here in the first place – to impose your lifestyle of offensive unnecessary lighting on the rest of us? Do you even notice what you are doing to others? Do you even care? Do you not notice that your lights are the only ones on all up and down the street all night? Of course you don’t because you aren’t even here to step outside and notice the impact of your selfish behavior on the night sky around you. Are you so unaware that it’s your lights that light up your neighbor’s property? Why do you need to do that? Open your eyes and think about how you would feel if this was being done to you and you were sick and wanting to sleep. Please. As you age you may notice that good sleep is often more difficult to obtain. Does it feel good to make sleep difficult for those around you?
How about the neighbor who spitefully directs their outdoor motion detector lights directly into our bedroom and living room windows, and positioned their motion sensitive lights to go off and on when we/dogs are walking in our own yard. I didn’t ask for them to light up my yard. Yet they do. Their motion detector lights light up our driveway (not theirs, ours) and the street in front of our home, not theirs, and all the way across the street to the house across from us. Why? The lights are triggered constantly by trees moving, wildlife, people walking out on the street or cars driving by. Why is it okay to ruin my right to sleep at night? Especially when they aren’t even here!! Please note: when they are here they turn off all the excessive outside party lighting (except the motion lights) so they can sleep!!! Go figure. Obviously they are entitled to sleep in the dark but we are not. Just to be clear: you are not providing me or anyone with “ambience” by means of your excessive lighting and if you aren’t here to enjoy your “ambience” then just turn it off and stop wasting electricity! It amazes and astounds me that many people visiting Manzanita do not actually respect others, do not care about dark skies, obviously do not value the environment, and are the biggest hypocrites about energy conservation and believe that electricity is power to be wasted. Apparently everyone (other than an STR) has the right to do whatever they want with their outdoor lighting 24 hours a day including pointing it directly into the privacy of our own homes, and to hell with the rest of us. What a pleasant world we live in now.
