The Coaster Theatre Playhouse Celebrates 50 Years of Community Theatre
Dust off your platform shoes, grab your cool threads and head to the Coaster Theatre Playhouse on Wednesday, June 29 to celebrate the theatre’s 50th birthday with a day of entertainment, groovy tunes from the 1970s, costume contest and silent auction.
The open-house party runs from 2 to 5 p.m. in the theatre’s courtyard and from 6 to 9 p.m. in the theatre.
In 1972, Maurie Clark, purchased The Coaster building, which housed a roller skating rink, and, after an extensive remodel, presented Cannon Beach with the Coaster Theatre Playhouse.
The Portland State University Summer Stock Company opened at the newly remodeled theatre on June 29, 1972. That winter, Cannon Beach residents, with D.K. Smith and Bill Steidel at the helm, put on the first community production of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. This began a tradition of producing community plays and musicals throughout the year for over the past 50 years. Generations of North Coast residents and visitors have participated on and off stage at the Coaster Theatre, often creating lifelong friendships and a few marriages.
In 2001, after Clark’s death, the Coaster Theatre became a nonprofit organization that continues to be dedicated to presenting live theatre and events that engage residents and visitors of all ages.
The Coaster Theatre is celebrating all year with a selection of shows and playwrights that are audience favorites. The theatre is also offering monthly special event concerts to celebrate this momentous anniversary. Details about the 50th birthday party, plays, musicals and special events are at coastertheatre.com
Upcoming shows and events at the theatre:
Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express, July 6 – Aug. 6
Auditions for Gramercy Ghost, July 25 & 26
Clue: The Musical, Aug. 10 – Sept. 10

TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM PLAN OPEN HOUSE
NEHALEM BAY – The Cities of Manzanita, Nehalem, and Wheeler are finalizing a draft, joint Transportation System Plan and are seeking public review and feedback. The latest draft includes an updated list of potential transportation projects and improvements that could be built within each city and in the region over the next 20 years.
The public is invited to learn more about the projects and improvements that will be included in the draft TSP and give feedback through an online survey and at an in-person open house on June 15, from 4-6 p.m. at the North County Recreation District in Nehalem. There will be no formal presentation and visitors can stop by at any time. A link to the online survey will be posted to the project website (nehalembaytsp.org) beginning June 10.
Public feedback is needed to ensure that the proposed TSP projects reflect each city’s unique transportation needs as well as challenges related to travel on U.S. 101.
The updated list of projects and materials incorporates recent feedback from the public, the three cities, and collaboration with the Oregon Department of Transportation. The final TSP will describe transportation goals, policies, and potential project investments and strategies, while considering travel needs for people who walk, use cars, ride bicycles, move freight, or ride the bus.
For more information about the TSP and to sign up for the email list, visit nehalembaytsp.org or contact ODOT project manager James Feldmann: james.feldmann@odot.oregon.gov, 541-257-7669.

Shopping for cars locally
I’m looking to buy locally, because Portland car shopping is no fun.
Are you thinking about selling? I’m looking for a Subaru Outback or a Toyota Highlander hybrid or something comparable in size and ability…. Perhaps open to others for something to hold me over for a bit.
Middle-ish range pricing.
My (apparently newish) timing belt on my Subaru snapped and bent the head— so I’m out a car with kiddo and job, you know, no fun!
Thought I’d ask here 🙂
Thanks community.
