Linda Kozlowski Comments on Community Growth

Submitted By: Linda.Kozlowski@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
I’m Linda Kozlowski and I’m running for re-election to the Manzanita City Council.

We are seeing a burst of building activity in our community since the pandemic. This is most obvious in the expansion of the Highlands development and the new Third Street residences. For many years, we have averaged just a few new homes every year, but recently we have seen a major jump in demand for new homes.

While we know change is a constant in our lives, we must keep an eye on management of this inevitable growth in our community. We must also continue to keep a healthy balance between the increasing number of tourists and the residents who call Manzanita home.

The most important way to keep that balance is to update our Comprehensive Plan. The Comprehensive Plan is the roadmap for how we envision our community, and it reflects the community’s vision of itself and guides the city’s growth. The Comprehensive Plan process is your opportunity to express your views on local land use and the zoning designations that will flow from that process.

Even considering the urban growth boundaries, Manzanita has a very limited supply of land. Our land use goals will have to consider our needs for livable residential areas, a commercial district, dune management, workforce housing, and green space. I urge you to join me in finding the right balance that accommodates growth, maintains our small-town feel, and preserves the beautiful natural environment that brought us to this magical place.

On September 28th from 5-7pm at the Pine Grove Community House, the City of Manzanita will have our second information gathering session leading to the update of our Comprehensive Plan. PLEASE JOIN THE CONVERSATION! Community members are asked to register for this event via Eventbrite posted on the city’s website.

Read more about the process to update the Plan: ci.manzanita.or.us/envision-manzanita/
Register for the Town Hall event Sept. 28, 5pm: www.eventbrite.com/e/city-of-manzanita-listening-sessions-town-hall-tickets-417772166797

I feel strongly that this work is vital for the future vision of our community. I ask for your vote on November 8. You can reach me at Linda.Kozlowski@gmail.com. Or visit my website at LindaforManzanita.com for more details.

CoastWatch Challenge

Submitted By: katie@oregonshores.org – Click to email about this post
Oregon Shores is launching our first ever coastwide bioblitz—The CoastWatch Fall Challenge. This challenge is an Oregon coast community science effort to motivate the public to learn about our coast’s animals, plants, and algae for ten days from September 23 to October 2, 2022. From the Winchuck River in Curry County on the Oregon-California Border to Fort Stevens State Park at the mouth of the Columbia River in Clatsop County, the shoreline is waiting for you to find its wild occupants!

This project encourages volunteers and the public to make and share observations on rocky shores, sandy beaches, dunes, and near-shore estuaries all along the Oregon coast while learning how to use iNaturalist. This event was inspired by Snapshot Cal Coast, where for two weeks every year starting in June, the California Academy of Sciences mobilizes and organizes partners along the California coast to make and share observations of as many species as possible to build an annual snapshot of biodiversity along the California coast.

Create a free iNaturalist account and find our project, “CoastWatch Fall Challenge 2022” (www.inaturalist.org/projects/coastwatch-fall-challenge-2022). When the challenge begins, go to the coast, take pictures of all the species you observe, and use iNaturalist’s image recognition software to help you identify them. iNaturalist is available as a free app and accessible through any web browser.

Two participants will earn a Pacific 2023 Northwest Tidelog—prizes will go to whoever submits the most observations and the individual who observes the highest number of species throughout the challenge.

For more information about the event or CoastWatch, contact Jesse Jones, CoastWatch Volunteer Coordinator, at (503) 989-7244, jesse@oregonshores.org.

Mark’s Community Matters: Pine Grove

Submitted By: MarkForCouncil2022@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
Last night we attended the newly-returned monthly Pine Grove members’ potluck. After Covid-19 stopped indoor events, the nonprofit Pine Grove Community House had to stop many of its community-oriented activities like the regular membership potlucks. They also had to stop renting the space which is their primary source of funding. It has been a difficult couple of years for the organization.

The social hour allowed us to meet new friends and catch up on summer news with old friends. Then we all dug into an amazing array of foods from many family traditions, finishing off with a particularly delicious Apple Brown Betty (among many other tasty sweets).

The main event was the presentation by Pine Grove board members Patricia Welch and board President Lynne Gross on the soon-to-be-completed Master Plan construction, along with the regular business meeting agenda. Wendy Ryan talked about the upcoming “ReHomed Art Show” event (show dates, Oct. 14-16). Lee Hamilton coordinated the event with aplomb, volunteer bartender Tom Mock poured wine like a pro, and many other volunteers made the night a success. The presentation used the newly installed high tech A-V system, which made hearing and seeing the presenters and slides a seamless process.

In spite of Covid closures, supply scarcity and the destruction of the kitchen by flood, the Pine Grove remodel is entering its final phase. If the remodeled kitchen is any indication, these new additions will be beautiful and very functional!

Over the next few weeks they will begin construction on a small meeting room in the rear of the building which can also be used as a “Brides’ Room” for changing when wedding parties use the facility. A new interior stairway will be installed to give easy access to lower storage enabling members to bring supplies upstairs without having to go outside. The piece de resistance will be a new back patio so outdoor events can be accommodated (and good weather enjoyed).

I’m looking forward to future potlucks and the introduction of Bingo nights, as well as the return of beloved events like the ReHomed Art Show, holiday bazaars, and community meetings.

The Pine Grove Community House is an important piece of Manzanita’s history (dedicated in 1933), and is on the National Register of Historic Places. As a volunteer-run organization, they need new volunteer members to keep the programs running. I’m grateful it survived the pandemic and is moving forward with strength and more members than ever. Congratulations to the Pine Grove Board for their efforts!

I’m Mark Kuestner (KEST-ner). I’m running for City Council because I care about this community, including historical buildings and organizations like the Pine Grove. I hope to earn your support in November.

Do You Have a Used iPad Air 2?

Submitted By: artlight7@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
I am searching for an iPad Air 2 in good to excellent condition. I would be oh-so-happy — and grateful — to purchase this from you.

I depend on the Incipio Clamcase+ keyboard for my work. It is compatible only with the iPad Air 2. This year, I tried out owning the iPad Air 4 and the Air 5, but neither works with any keyboard comparable to the Clamcase+ from Incipio. (These keyboards are still widely available on eBay, are fast, compact, backlit, and hold a charge for months.)

The battery in my iPad Air 2 is at its end. I don’t have much time left to find a replacement. I say: “Let’s solve this problem and make it a win-win! — cash in your hands + an upgraded iPad Air 2 in mine.”

Please text or email to discuss details.

Thank you, BBQ!

Heather Christie Riverfront Concert This Saturday

The last live music show of the season is here

The weather is lovely and it’s the week of the Fall Equinox.

The perfect time to gather one last time to enjoy the sweetness of September sunshine, falling leaves and beautiful live music on our riverside stage.

Get your tickets using the link below
www.northfork53.com/events/heather-christie-private-concert-tickets?p

Heather Christie has been a friend of mine for years.
I’ve always loved her voice and her songs. They are full of emotion and a wild hopefulness that love will conquer all.

If you haven’t heard her live you are in for a real treat.

We only sell 20 tickets to these intimate outdoor shows and they are always magical.

100% of proceeds go to the artist. It’s our way of supporting live music after the pandemic made it so hard for artists to perform.

This time the show is starting it early so you can enjoy the fall sunshine and drive home before it gets dark.

Our tea room will be open before the show and during intermission pouring complimentary blends!

Heather Christie in Concert
4pm- 6pm Saturday Sept. 24th at North Fork 53

Beach Rollator Wanted

Submitted By: murphy.km3@frontier.com – Click to email about this post
I have multiple sclerosis and unfortunately am not able to enjoy our beautiful beaches the way I would like to. Does anyone out there have a Beach Rollator/Walker with the oversized tires that I could try, or one for sale? I’m thinking of getting one, but they are pretty expensive so I’d love to try one before spending $1,000 on one! Another beach walker alternative is a standard “tennis ball” walker that has been converted for all terrain.

I’m in Nehalem, and would love to meet you at any beach, or just come borrow your walker and return it the same day if you don’t want to go to the beach with me.

Here is a link to a website with pictures of the walker/rollator and the converted “tennis ball” walker if you’re not sure what I’m referring to.
Thank you so much! Feel free to call, or email with questions or feedback.
