Dirty Bird’s Community Compost Club
Join us on May 24th 5-7pm for our first Community Compost Club meeting on the site of the future home of Dirty Bird’s Garden Center (corner of Manzanita and Division). Email queenbee@dirtybirdsgardencenter to RSVP.
Dirty Bird’s Garden Center will be built on the vacant lot on the corner of Division and Manzanita across from Underhill Plaza. Until we have a building, we are doing programming and events with local partners to support top sustainability efforts.
Our first project is making compost from food waste. Food waste accounts for over 20% of landfill materials and production, transportation, and handling of food generate significant Carbon Dioxide (CO2) emissions and when food ends up in landfills, it generates methane, an even more potent greenhouse gas. We want to divert as much food waste as possible from our local waste stream through our Community Compost Club.
Members will work together to build a community worm bin that we can use for our household food waste. We will also help those interested in building home based vermicompsting systems.
Worms are magicians! Let’s help them help us.
Marc Johnson for Nehalem Bay Health District Board
During this period the Health District Board has done extensive community outreach and completed a five-year strategic plan. Under Marc’s leadership the District Board has strengthened collaboration with community partners.
With Marc’s strong and visionary leadership, the Health District has gained the support of Senators Jeff Merkley and Ron Wyden and obtained $3 million in federal funding to be the foundation of the funding package necessary to build a new larger health center and to renovate and modernize the Nehalem Valley Care Center in Wheeler, the region’s only skilled nursing and rehabilitation facility.
I’ve worked with Marc Johnson on the North Tillamook Library Board both in my position as President and when he was President. He has continued strengthening the Library’s community presence in north Tillamook County and continued the financial planning for the future.
Marc lends his leadership skills and wisdom in communication strategies to the nonprofits in the community that have been fortunate to have him involved as a volunteer. In addition to the North Tillamook Library Friends, these include the Hoffman Center for the Arts, the Emergency Volunteer Corps of Nehalem Bay and the Neahkahnie Water District.
Our community is fortunate to have Marc C. Johnson’s leadership at the Nehalem Bay Health District as this crucial time. I will vote for Marc and for the Nehalem Bay Health District’s general obligation bond measure on May 16, 2023.

Together We Can Build An Even Stronger Community
President, Nehalem Bay Health District
For the last six years I have had the honor to serve on the Nehalem Bay Health District board, most of that time as president of the board. During this time fellow board members and I made a conscience decision to move the Health District from a long-time role as a landlord to being an advocate for better health and senior care in north Tillamook County.
The board developed a strategic plan and is acting on that plan. The bond measure the Health District has placed on the May 16 ballot is a direct result of public input and board planning which identified having improved quality and access to health and senior care as key priorities for the community.
The District has also become a stronger collaborator and consensus builder with other community and governmental organizations. The Health District’s initiative to address the chronic shortage of workforce housing for health care and other essential workers resulted from collaboration with Care Tillamook and involves open and ongoing communication and cooperation with the city of Wheeler.
I’m both humbled and honored to have support for my re-election from community members who engage regularly in the Health District’s work. Dianne Bloom, a retired nurse and clinical nursing specialist, is one such endorser who in a recent letter praised the “strong performance” of the Health District board. Tillamook County commissioner Erin Skaar, a champion for creating more housing solutions in the county, wrote recently in an endorsement of my re-election that she “had the pleasure of working with Marc Johnson in his role as Chair of the Health District. Through his leadership and vision the District has done amazing work.”
Obviously, I hope voters will endorse the bond measure that will fund the Health District’s future-focused plan allowing the community to enter a new era of health and senior care and begin to address workforce housing needs of health care and other essential workers.
My family relocated to the north coast a decade ago. Like most of our neighbors I have come to love this special place, and I certainly feel a duty to give back and pay forward – maintaining what we value about the community and at the same time taking responsible steps to secure an even better future.
I remain eager to do my part to address quality and accessibility in health care for seniors, families and children. Working together we can further the mission of our Health District “to facilitate the delivery of health and community services by encouraging collaborative partnerships and stewardship of public resources.”
Together we can strengthen and improve health and senior care quality and accessibility right here at home.
I respectfully request your vote and your support for the Health District’s bond measure in the May 16 election. Thank you.

World Labyrinth Day Sunday 5/6 – 8am at Neahkahnie Beach
Sand Spiral Labyrinth Walk this Sunday 5/7 at Neahkahnie Beach – free community gathering.
– 7:30am Meditation/ 8am Labyrinth Walk or walk anytime you like before the tide sweeps it away!
– Slow down, breathe deep and connect with the awesome beauty of Neahkahnie Mt and Ocean.
Folks have been asking me ‘Why Labyrinth walks?’ Well, I have practiced and guided Walking Meditation for decades as a Yoga Therapist as a way to cultivate present moment awareness, to ‘be’ peacefully with Nature. Then when I was part of the Intensive Cardiac Rehab program at Silverton Hospital OR, I guided Meditation Walks for patients and staff through a classic Labyrinth design on canvas that could be rolled out indoors or at beautiful outdoor destinations like Silver Falls State Park and the Oregon Gardens. When I transplanted to the Oregon Coast, the little kid in me found a magical combination of ‘all of the above’ practices in drawing spiral labyrinths in the sand. I take my rake and trace a spiral walking path. Hope you can come by on Sunday morning and walk with me for World Labyrinth Day. Let’s be part of a rolling wave of peace around the globe.
