This strategic planning event will take place on March 7th at the Manzanita Branch Library starting at 6:00pm. Join Library Director Don Allgeier for a brief overview of the library’s strategic planning process followed by a listening session to provide community members with an opportunity to shape the future of their library. A sad announcement

Mike Stanley, owner of Mike’s Bike Shop for many years in Cannon Beach has passed at age 75.

He suffered a stroke and passed from complications Saturday, Feb 25th. He will be sorely missed, as well as his infectious energy and enthusiasm for life. Anyone who knew Mike and Christina Stanley and would like to reach out to her, please email for her contact info.

Mike and Christina spent the last several years living in Corvallis, Or, where they spent time at the Wildlife refuge photographing birds and hiking on the many trails Corvallis has.

Mike was active, cycling around Corvallis solo or with groups, he was part of a Celtic music group and was always practicing his flute and concertina. He loved sailing his small sailboat The Ursa Minor.

If Mike touched your life in some way, you have a story or just wish to communicate your condolences, please do not hesitate to send me an email.

Thank you,
Megan Lucas

Nehalem, Wheeler, Cape Meares Residents to Ponder Hemingway at Writers Read Celebration March 10

Submitted By: nmccarthy1276@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
If Ernest Hemingway arrived on the North Coast, what would he say and how would he say it?
Residents from Cape Meares, Nehalem and Wheeler will be among the writers who will ponder this question during the Writers Read Celebration on March 10 at the Cannon Beach Library.
Butch Freedman, of Cape Meares, will read his short story, “An Old Man Surfs”; Celeste Deveney, of Nehalem, will recite “A Dog’s Tale”; and Wheeler resident L Swartz will read their short story, “12-Step Famous,” during the celebration, which begins at 7 p.m. in the library, 131 N. Hemlock St.
It will be a hybrid event, with an online link available on the library’s website, cannonbeachlibrary.org
Writers selected to read the works they submitted for the celebration have all sorts of ideas about what Hemingway would say if he visited the North Coast. He might: ask why he left Cuba; tell stories and knock back a bourbon at the Driftwood Inn; recount how a boy reeled in a seagull; discuss fishing with a youngster at the library; or describe how a 12-step program member took flight as a crow.
Most of the writers, who range from Longview, Washington to Cape Meares, Oregon, will read their short stories and poems in person at the library, while at least three will read online.
This is the fifth year for the Writers Read Celebration. Writers from everywhere were asked to submit entries in any form, including stories, essays, poems, haikus, etc. on a theme; entries were limited to 600 words, and writers could submit up to three pieces each. This year’s theme was “Hemingway at the Beach: What Would He Say?”
A six-member panel of volunteers chose 16 from among 47 submissions without knowing who wrote them. Selections were made based on how closely the pieces followed the theme, word usage, content and the emotions evoked.
In addition to Freedman, Deveney and Swartz, other writers who were invited to the Writers Read Celebration are:
Darrell Clukey, Cannon Beach, Oregon: short story, “The Passing Visitor”
Dian Greenwood, Portland, Oregon: short story, “On First Seeing”
Craig Allen Heath, Longview, Washington: short story, “Papa at Cannon Beach”
Marc Imlay, Longview, Washington: short story, “The Young Boy and the Seagull”
Eve Marx, Seaside, Oregon: short story, “Nothing’s Going to Happen”
Steven Mayer, Cannon Beach, Oregon: short story, “Hemingway at the Beach”
Russell Myers, Vancouver, Washington: short story, “The Library”
Jennifer Nightingale, Astoria, Oregon: poems, “Papa’s Bindlestiff” and “Eel Grass”
Steve Price, Portland, Oregon: short story, “Leaving Cuba”
Scott T. Starbuck, Vancouver, Washington: poem, “Salmon Prophet”
James A. Tweedie, Long Beach, Washington: short stories, “Castaway” and “Birthday at the Beach”

SYMPHONY PRESENT PETER AND THE WOLF

Submitted By: sdawagner@icloud.com – Click to email about this post
The North Oregon Coast Symphony continues its 2022-2023 season with two concerts in March.

This orchestra, under the direction of conductor Cory Pederson, is an ensemble of North Coast musicians offering live classical music in local venues. Titled “Playful Inspirations”, the afternoon concerts will feature Serge Prokofiev’s “Peter and the Wolf”. This classic children’s tale set to music is the perfect form for introducing young people to the various orchestral instruments, as each character in the story is represented by a musical “voice.” The narrator will be Liz Cole, an award-winning stage and TV actor (“Seinfeld”, “Star Trek”, “ER”) who now lives in Manzanita.
The program will begin with Peter and the Wolf, and children (with adult supervision) are encouraged to attend. Admission is free for children 12 and under. Cookies and refreshments will be available at intermission.
Other highlights of the concerts include a Vivaldi guitar piece performed by Jim Achilles, and solo piano pieces by Bach and Beethoven performed by Diane Amos. The balance of the program will feature full orchestral works by Mendelssohn, Rossini, and Beethoven.

The first concert will take place on Saturday, March 11, at St. Catherine Episcopal Church (36335 N. Hwy 101, Nehalem, OR) beginning at 3:00 pm. Tickets will be sold at the door only for this concert.

The second concert will be on Sunday, March 12, at the Charlene Larsen Center for the Performing Arts (588 16th St., Astoria, OR) beginning at 3 pm. Tickets will be sold online and at the door for this concert. To purchase tickets online, visit LarsenCenter.org., or by phone at 503-338-9132.

Admission for both concerts will be: $10 Adults, $5 students, and children 12 and under (with adult supervision) free.

WANTED New home for a precious kitty

Submitted By: kerryiallen@hotmail.com – Click to email about this post
Sam the sweet and friendly kitty is searching for a new home.

Sam is approximately 3 years old and has lost his owner due her passing recently. Sam, whom I have met, is a sweetheart, a talker, inside/outside kitty who is looking for his next forever home.

Sam is currently being cared for by a kind neighbor, who is unable to take Sam. Sam currently resides out off Miami Foley road, approximately 10 miles from Manzanita.

Sam is on his own, so I am unsure if he would be okay with other kitties or dogs.

For more information about Sam, please reach out to Becky at 503.322.2745.

I am placing this post on Becky’s behalf.

Thank you and let’s all find this precious kitty a new home.
