A healthy community needs leaders strong enough to take a stand. Each member of our council was elected for their knowledge, strengths and the unique skills they have to better our community. Strong leaders, problem solvers, do not use rules of Follow the Leader to decide what is best for the citizens…they listen to their constituents, ask questions, research alternatives, ask more questions, listen again, before decisions are made. No matter who is leading the charge, regardless of what their fellow councilors think, each individual council member has made a commitment to the people. Expectedly, to do the best job they can, make their decisions with thought and honesty….”There can be no daily democracy without daily citizenship” (R.Nadar)
I would like to commend Deb Simmons, Mayor of Manzanita, for exemplifying the role of city councilor. She is intelligent, respectful, a problem solver , strong in her beliefs, caring and a great listener. She saw a need, ran for office and has been a force to be reckoned with from day one. Her passion for citizen involvement is certain…she listens, researches, collaborates, and listens again. Mayor Simmons most definitely walks her talk.
Deb has been unjustly attacked, again and again, by the same group of unhappy campers, and she just moves on! She has too much too do in her Mayor job to be detoured by naysayers…my biggest kudos for her strength here.
Deb is 100% committed to the healthy growth of Manzanita and its citizens. I look forward to the day when the negative mudslinging stops, and we can all work together for a common goal…our city!

During its regular meeting on May 10, 2023 the board of the Nehalem Bay Health District expressed
its profound sadness over the recent death of Jeff Slamal, the Health District’s chief executive
officer.

Jeff, who had held the administrative position with the District since 2017, died suddenly on May 7.

The board expresses its deepest condolences to Vicki, Jeff’s family and his many, many friends.
Jeff informed the board on March 20 of this year that he intended to retire in June at the end of the
current fiscal year, and he indicated his desire to work closely with his replacement to ensure a
smooth transition.

“Jeff’s decision to retire was accepted with genuine regret, but we certainly recognized and
appreciated his strong desire to spend more time with his wife, family and friends, while continuing
to enjoy his life as a musician and his role as a member of the board of the Riverbend Players,” said
board president Marc C. Johnson. “The tragedy of Jeff’s passing is made even more profound with
the realization that he will not enjoy his well-earned retirement after a lifetime of dedicated work and
public service.”

Johnson said he was speaking for all health District board members in praising Jeff Slamal’s service
to the District and the larger community. Jeff has been a key participant in every aspects of the
District’s work for the last six years from the development and execution of a strategic plan,
including preparation of a general obligation bond measure focused on local health and senior care
to strengthening relationships with the District’s community partners.

“Jeff never met a stranger,” Johnson said. “He was a tremendous ambassador for the District and its
mission. He was a ‘get it done’ kind of guy with a great sense of humor who was also tremendously
caring and very people focused. As a friend and colleague there was none better.”

Hi my name is Nick Burns, I was born and raised on the coast. I grew up doing all different kinds of maintenance in hotels, vacation rentals, and residential homes. Later I worked for a general contractor for almost two years doing miscellaneous carpentry inside and out of commercial buildings and residential homes. I then met another general contractor who guided and helped me get licensed as well as start a company of my own.
