About North Coast Communities for Watershed Protection:
In 2012, NCCWP was founded in Rockaway Beach, Oregon by citizens who were concerned about the mass clearcutting and aerial pesticide spraying of their primary source of surface drinking water, the Jetty Creek Watershed. Since 2000, that watershed has been about 90% clearcut by timber companies and then sprayed with pesticides. Since NCCWP was established, we have gained many new members on the North Coast of Oregon. We now have over 1,600 members, mostly in the region from Lincoln City to Astoria. We advocate for no more logging, pesticide spraying, nor slash burning within Oregon drinking watersheds, regardless of ownership.
Safe drinking water and clean air are part of the public trust that we all are entitled to have.

‘CRIMES OF THE HEART’ FINAL WEEKEND AT THE PERFORMING ARTS CENTER

Submitted By: admin@riverbendplayers.org – Click to email about this post

FINAL WEEKEND! THREE SHOWS REMAINING, MARCH 15th, 16th, and 17th!
‘CRIMES OF THE HEART’ Live on Stage at the NCRD Performing Arts Center in Nehalem.

Great seats available at www.RiverbendPlayers.org

CRIMES OF THE HEART (Pulitzer Prize Winner):

The scene is Hazlehurst, Mississippi, where the three Magrath sisters have gathered to await news of the family patriarch, their grandfather, who is living out his last hours in the local hospital.

Lenny, the oldest sister, is unmarried at thirty and facing diminishing marital prospects; Meg, the middle sister, who quickly outgrew Hazlehurst, is back after a failed singing career on the West Coast; while Babe, the youngest, is out on bail after having shot her husband in the stomach.

Their troubles, grave and yet somehow hilarious, are highlighted by their priggish cousin, Chick, and by the awkward young lawyer who tries to keep Babe out of jail while helpless not to fall in love with her.
In the end, the play is the story of how its characters escape the past to seize the future—but the telling is so true and touching and consistently hilarious that it will linger in the mind long after the curtain has closed.

RIVERBEND PLAYERS COMMUNITY THEATER LOOKING FOR VICTORIAN STYLE FAINTING COUCH/CHAISE LOUNGE

Submitted By: fsquillo@riverbendplayers.org – Click to email about this post

Riverbend Players is looking for a furniture piece like the one pictured in this post for our next production, THE PLAY THAT GOES WRONG.

We will need to borrow it until mid-June.

It doesn’t have to be an exact match, and it doesn’t have to be in great shape. It doesn’t need a sidearm or side panel. We can work with anything close, but it does require one open end, as pictured.

We have been graciously offered a couple of options, but none are exactly what we are looking for, so the search continues.

If you or anyone you know has this and would be kind enough to let us use it in our production, please get in touch with our director, Frank Squillo, at fsquillo@riverbendplayers.org.

Thank you!

SyMPHONY CONCERTS THIS WEEKEND!

Submitted By: sdawagner@icloud.com – Click to email about this post
The North Oregon Coast Symphony continues its 2023-2024 season with two concerts this weekend. Designed to please audience members of all ages, the performances will feature Greg Smith’s Zoo Song. This musical story of a young person’s first visit to the zoo is a wonderful form for introducing the various orchestral instruments, as each animal in the story is represented by a musical “voice.” The narrator will be Deac Guidi, a local professional opera singer who has performed throughout the northwest region. He also teaches Speech Communication at Clatsop Community College.

Continuing the animals theme, the program includes three short pieces from Saint Saëns’ Carnival of the Animals. A solo cello, string bass, and clarinet portray an elegant swan, a lumbering elephant, and a cuckoo calling, all accompanied by pianist Diane Amos.

Other highlights of the concerts include the orchestral work Irlande by Augusta Holmès, the familiar Pomp and Circumstance by Edward Elgar, Julius Fucik’s Entry of the Gladiators, and Elmer Bernstein’s Great Escape March.

The first concert will take place on Saturday, March 16, at St. Catherine Episcopal Church (36335 N. Hwy 101, Nehalem, OR) beginning at 3:00 pm.

The second concert will be on Sunday, March 17, at the Bob Chisholm Community Center (1225 Avenue A, Seaside, OR) beginning at 3:00 pm.

Admission for both concerts will be: $10 Adults, ages 18 and under FREE (children 12 and under with adult supervision).
Tickets will be available at the door only for both concerts.
Cookies and refreshments will be available at intermission.

once again i find myself strongly agreeing with mark kuestner’s bbq post.

i agree with his assessment of those who serve the city of manzanita, whether they be volunteers (city council) or paid staff that do the nuts and bolts of work that keeps the city running.

i agree that it’s a great idea to “go straight to the horse’s mouth,” as old timers like to say, if you want to know more about what’s going on. that expression means you are getting information from the person who has direct personal knowledge of it.

and i do know that mark kuestner does NOT sit on manzanita’s city council!

i have copied and pasted his post here below, to be clear in your minds that which i am addressing.

i live in nehalem, and am an interested observer, sometimes participant, in changes and happenings in north tillamook county.

Our Neighbors.
Manzanita has a hard-working bunch of talented volunteers looking after our interests in city government and getting lots of important work done every week.
Tom Campbell was just newly appointed to City Council, Brad Hart as well a few months ago. We got a great new Mayor when Kathryn Stock stepped up to the plate and agreed to serve. Linda Kozlowski has been a true stalwart on council for many years, and 2024 marks the fourth year in Jerry Spegman’s first term on City Council: a good mix of the old and the new.
The Council has been ably supported for years now by city staff, led by City Manager, Leila Aman. Other city staff keeping the lights on in Manzanita: Dan Weitzel, Scott Gebhart, Nancy Jones, Nina Crist, Police Chief Erik Harth and Sergeant Mike Sims among others.
They and their families make up a large part of our community.
City Council recently created a single email address we can use to contact all five of them in one fell swoop: citycouncil@ci.manzanita.or.us
Next time an issue comes up that you’re curious about, a procedure that you think needs some tweaking, let them know your thoughts,

Fictional Soap Opera – Tides of Manzanita – Episode 3

The Tides of Manzanita – The Server Has Ears

In the picturesque coastal town of Manzanita, where the drama of the council rivaled the tumultuous sea, Episode 3 of “The Tides of Manzanita” unfolds through the eyes of Ruby, a server at The Cove. This was no ordinary night; the air was charged with a sense of impending intrigue, and The Cove, usually a haven for tourists and locals alike, had transformed into the stage for a clandestine council meeting.

Ruby had seen her share of secrets whispered over candlelit tables, but nothing prepared her for the spectacle that night. The council had gathered in the secluded back room, a space usually reserved for the most discreet of gatherings. As she moved silently among the shadows, her tray of drinks a mere camouflage, Ruby became the unwitting confidante of Manzanita’s elite.

Councilor Jed, a man whose legacy was as deeply rooted in Manzanita, led the assembly with an air of gravitas that commanded attention. Beside him, Councilor Bart, his ever-present shadow, nodded in agreement with everything said. The newcomers—Sophia, Marcus, and Elena—sat wide-eyed, their innocence stark against the seasoned politicking of their more tenured councilors.

The heart of their gathering was a scandal—a report that threatened to shake the foundations of Manzanita itself. Ruby overheard whispers of an investigation, a sum of $150,000 vanishing from the general fund, and a mayor wrongfully accused. The plot the council concocted was more outlandish than any soap opera that graced the television in The Cove’s cozy lounge: blame the disappearance of the report on a fantastical heist by sea-faring pirates, lured by the lore of Manzanita’s hidden treasures.

Sophia’s voice, clear and principled, cut through the din of plotting. “But the truth…” she began, only to be silenced by a wave of Jed’s hand. Ruby’s heart ached for Sophia, the lone voice of reason in a sea of deceit.

As the night wore on, Ruby’s rounds became fewer, but her presence remained unnoticed, a ghost among the conspirators. The council’s plan unfolded with each refill of their glasses: create a tale so captivating that the town would forget the report ever existed, turning their attention to the romanticism of pirates and buried treasure.

Yet, as the moon climbed higher in the sky, casting a silvery glow through the windows of The Cove, Ruby knew that this story was far from over. With each whispered word and clandestine glance, she pieced together the true narrative of Manzanita, a tale not of pirates and treasure, but of power, greed, and the betrayal of truth. The group would do anything to sideline the former Mayor, who dared to question their decisions.

As the council departed, leaving behind nothing but the echo of their schemes, Ruby was left with a decision. In her hands, she held the power to unravel the council’s carefully woven tapestry of lies. The quiet observer, the keeper of The Cove’s secrets, now became its most pivotal figure. Oh well, she thought, with $150 grand to throw around, they ought to have left a better tip!

“The Tides of Manzanita, Episode 3: The Server Has Ears,” as seen through Ruby’s eyes, transformed from a simple tale of political intrigue into a story of courage and moral fortitude. In the coming days, the tides would turn, and Ruby would find herself at the heart of a storm that could change Manzanita forever.
