Fictional Soap Opera – Episode 10 – Afterward

Submitted By: Wstone1991@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
In “The Tides of Manzanita,” Episode 10 titled “Afterward”, the sweeping currents of change and revelation reach their climax, bringing closure and new beginnings to the picturesque coastal town. As secrets are unveiled and the truth comes to light, the episode ties up loose ends and sets the stage for the next soap opera season in Manzanita’s storied history.

The episode opens with Victoria, Ruby, and Shirley, now in possession of the suppressed investigative report. Victoria, ever the diligent journalist, begins the careful process of disseminating the information. She opts for a measured approach, posting excerpts on the community Facebook page and North Coast BBQ bulletin board using generic language to describe the various disputes and accusations detailed in the report. Her posts reveal the city manager’s frequent clashes with the former mayor and other city employees, attributed to a problematic anger management issue.

As Victoria’s revelations ripple through Manzanita, the council is forced to confront the fallout. It is disclosed that the councilors, led by Councilor Jed, had hired a management consultant and psychologist to address the city manager’s temperament issues. These consulting expenditures, hidden from public view, had significantly contributed to the legal and investigative costs that the report included.

Victoria’s commentary strikes a chord with the community. She points out that much of the fervor surrounding the city manager’s actions could have been mitigated had the council been more transparent about the report’s findings. Unfortunately, Councilor Jed, who had spearheaded the decision to hire the city manager, found himself unable to admit to these failings publicly. The city manager did nothing to dissuade the councilor to protect his own image. The threat of further legal action by the manager was always an unspoken intimidating possibility.

The suppressed report becomes a pivotal issue in the next election cycle. Feeling the weight of public scrutiny and loss of influence, Councilor Jed opts for retirement, stepping away from the limelight and the controversies that marred his final days in office. Councilor Bart, too, decides not to run for re-election, recognizing that without Jed, his power and influence have waned.

These actions identified a weakness in the city charter during this interim period when there were no elected representatives on council, only appointed members.

The elections usher in a new era for Manzanita. The newly elected council pledges greater transparency and a commitment to prioritize the citizens’ interests over their own. This shift in governance leads to the eventual departure of the city manager, who resigns after realizing the loss of his main supporter, Jed. Armed with the council’s best departure wishes and severance package, the manager opted to open a less stressful retail florist shop. His successor is noted for a more even temperament, promising a smoother interaction with both the council and the community.

As Manzanita turns the page on this tumultuous chapter, life begins to settle into a new normal. Ruby returns to her duties at The Cove, her ear always tuned to the undercurrents of comments by the city’s power structure. Shirley, finding peace away from the stresses of city hall, secures a happier, less stressful job elsewhere. Victoria, recognized for her courageous journalism, is honored with a state independent journalism award, cementing her role as a pivotal figure in bringing truth to light.

Episode 10, “Afterword,” not only provides closure to the conflicts that have rocked Manzanita but also sets a hopeful tone for the future. As the daily cycle of the tides continues, the town looks forward to a period of stability and renewed trust in its leaders. One chapter closes, and another begins, with the citizens of Manzanita ready to face whatever challenges and changes come their way. Stay tuned for the next season of the North Coast’s favorite soap opera, The Tides of Manzanita.

Want more awe, joy, and delight in your life?

Monday, May 13, 2-4 pm join us for a presentation by Kathie Hightower, on Awe/Delight/Joy: Why it’s SO important, and ways to add them in to your daily life. Sociologists, psychologists, and neuroscientists have done extensive research studies on Awe and Joy. Join us to learn why these topics matter to you, especially as we age, and learn simple exercises to add more of these into your own daily life. Let’s choose the antidote to the current negative news spiral. Choose Joy. Here’s how.

Kathie dove into this subject many years ago and in fact published a small book on Simple Joys. She returned to study current research to prepare this presentation for you. Kathie spent many years doing keynotes and workshops on topics like Jump Into Life, and Joyful Living. This is a mini-presentation.

Bring a pen and a book or magazine to write on…we’ll have handouts ready for you to fill in.

The goal of the Conscious Aging and Community Connections Program is to bring people in our community together to get to know one another at a deeper level and to encourage one another to live our best possible lives.

The Conscious Aging and Community Connections Program is held on the second Monday of each month from 2-4pm. This program is sponsored by Pine Grove Community House which allows us to keep admission at $ 5 per session. All money received goes directly to Pine Grove.

Tillamook County Commissioners’ annual compensation

Submitted By: babbles@nehalemtel.net – Click to email about this post
to tillamook county voters,
i think it’s pertinent to know that one county commissioner’s current annual compensation of $125,000, then multiplied by 3 = $375,000.
i did the arithmetic, and that $375,000 is .26% of this year’s annual budget of $143,414,880. that’s about 1/4 of 1% of the total budget.
so the brouhaha that is being stirred up over the commissioners’ salaries is about an amount that doesn’t very much impinge on the overall dollars needed to run the county. it seems that this issue of the commissioners’ salaries is being presented to the voters as if our county would have so much more money to pay its bills if it weren’t for this “exorbitant” amount being paid to the commissioners.
also, i have to wonder how many people out there would step up to the plate to take the responsibility and time commitment of this job without this “exorbitant” compensation?

On Saturday, Conscious Living and Community Connections hosted Elizabeth Fournier, affectionately know as The Green Reaper. Elizabeth compassionately filled us in on natural burial and other alternatives for “going green.” The event would not have been possible without a venue. We are a lucky community to have NCRD available. Thank you, Kiley K. and your crew, and everyone at NCRD who make such community gatherings possible.

Environmental scientist ISO private room, tiny home

Submitted By: tylersimpson295@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
Hi friends! My name is Tyler, one of the lead wildlife interpreters at Haystack Rock Awareness Program. I moved here just a few months ago to work / volunteer with a number of conservation groups, further exploring my career as an Environmental scientist whilst positively contributing to the community.

Up until now, I have been renting via a monthly lease in Seaside thanks to FurnishedFinder (primarily for travel nurses). Unfortunately my landlords have informed me that they are experiencing a family emergency and will need the space for the remainder of the year to house their daughter and granddaughter.

With that, I am frantically looking for housing in the area, especially of which might come furnished. I am searching for a private bedroom, tiny home, etc. for the month of May so that I may look for long-term housing for the remanding of the year.

I have a large number of positive references, from AirBnB, to long-term rentals on Furnished Finder (including my current landlords), to a number of colleagues from Cannon Beach’s City Hall. You can also find my bio and title on HRAP’s website 🙂

Thank you for reading my post!

Kayak for Sale!

Yellow Prijon, 16′, ‘Seayak’ Kayak for sale – $300.00 OBO. The kayak is a single sit inside kayak meant for the ocean or lakes. The kayak is over 6 years old but is still going strong, please see photos for details. I bought this kayak as a beginner paddler and have used in fresh and saltwater; it is a very stable boat. It is plastic so like any plastic sit in kayak it is on the heavier side, but that is what makes it so stable. It is great for cutting through waves. It has plenty of storage space for camping or other storage needs.

Truth and Passion in Manzanita

Submitted By: Ingsland@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
This post is about general on going interest in Manzanita leadership.

Since moving to Manzanita four years ago, I have heard my junior high English and Journalism teacher’s voice in my head more often than I have since the early 70s. Libby Dunne was one of those teachers who left a lasting impression. She was passionate about teaching her students how to be intelligent consumers of information, how to recognize author bias and persuasion, and how to separate fact from fiction. She taught the difference between informative writing backed by references so the reader can read for themselves where the author had found specific information and entertainment style journalism which leans into hyperbole and opinion, in which the author tells the readers he/she is an expert without any support for that claim. (think Wall Street Journal vs National Enquirer)

Why has Libby Dunne made a sudden reappearance in my head? I was dismayed to read several posts or articles on Facebook or in local newspapers in 2020 that indicated there was a split in feelings towards the Manzanita City Council. The passion about our town was apparent. A sense of community or “team spirit” was not. Manzanita seemed to reflect our national political climate – divided. I did what Libby Dunne would have suggested. I began to run down the facts.

I discovered that there were several apparently disgruntled individuals who felt strongly about how business was being conducted in our town. I learned that one contentious issue was the (at that time) potential city hall. I relearned how unhappy people become when they feel that they are not heard or their opinion disregarded. But mostly I learned, hurt feelings aside, that the system worked as it should. When a fancy and expensive city hall was put forth, the town as a whole said, “No!” When people were unfairly targeted publicly, others came to their defense. When being a city councilor became too odious of a task due to personal attacks or incessant, repetitive meetings, people resigned and were replaced according to the rules. A new, more modest City Hall was planned.

I am grateful for Libby Dunne and all the other great teachers who followed her. I wish all people had that sort of experience in learning to read critically, which means reading with questions about the text and with an eye towards facts or bias, not simply being a critic. I wish all people would find the facts instead of simply swallowing whatever is put into print.

This is a beautiful town. I believe that all the residents here want this town to be the best possible place to live, and that is why passions are so clearly visible. In honor of Libby Dunne, I ask people to read the background information, read the city ordinances, take those steps to be truly informed and not merely indoctrinated. I don’t want any of the passion to be muffled. I do want facts and complete truths to be the currency exchanged in writing.
