1 lot of approximately 50 antique records (Victrola, Edison, RCA and others) in excellent shape, had been properly stored in my 1915 Edison phonograph which has been sold. Most have paper sleeves. These records are all around 100 years old.
You may have noted a recent ad, by another party, advertising a rare Victrola record player with the proper needle to play these 100 year old records. Plus, it’s been rebuilt. This is a perfect possible combination of these records and that antique Victrola record player. Call for Art! “In the Moment” Exhibition.
CBAA is excited to announce a new call for art with the theme “In the Moment.”

Theme Description:
“In the Moment” explores the concept of mindfulness, urging artists to capture the essence of living in the present and engaging with their surroundings. Whether it be through landscapes, abstract representations, portraiture, or conceptual art, we encourage artists to submit artwork that embodies the essence of being present and fully engaged with the “now.”

Submission Guidelines:
1. Artwork: All original art forms that fall within the theme of “In the Moment” are welcome. Submissions can include but are not limited to paintings, sculptures, photography, mixed media, ceramics, and installations. We encourage artists to experiment with their chosen medium while keeping the theme in mind.

2. Size and Format: There are no size restriction; however, we recommend submitting artwork that can be accommodated within our gallery space.

3. Submission Limit: Each artist may submit up to three artworks for consideration. Please provide a title, medium, dimensions, and a short description of each piece, explaining how it relates to the theme.

4. How to Submit: Please mail or drop off your artwork to the gallery along with the appropriate forms by Mar 13, 2024 to be entered into our selection process.

5. Deadline: The submission deadline for “In the Moment” is Mar 13, 2024. Late submissions will not be considered.

6. Selection Process: Our esteemed panel of jurors will carefully review all submissions and select artwork based on its concept, execution, originality, and appropriateness to the theme. Artists will be notified via email no later than March 18th, 2024 if they are accepted.

Exhibition Details:
Selected artworks will be featured in a prestigious group exhibition at Cannon Beach gallery, The exhibition will run from Mar 29, 2024, to April 28, 2024.

The food pantry at the Methodist Church in Nehalem is once again in need of tarps and also tents. We recently had a rush on the tarps that were given to us by an amazing donor and we are also out of tents. We could also use blankets and bath size towels if you have any. Anything that you can donate to us will be most appreciated.

Let’s Talk About… Something Else

I was in Newberg, Oregon for a big chunk of December and January. I went up to be with my big sister before and after the death of her husband of 58 years, a dear man I’ve known my entire life. She’s 16 years older than me and they were dating when I was a just puppy, so I mean my entire life literally. But this isn’t really about that. So many people in our community have lost loved ones. I’m not alone or special in the grief I feel. If we didn’t love our people so deeply, we wouldn’t grieve their loss so deeply. It’s the cost of the ticket and it hurts like crazy.

With his death my focus shifted. Things that used to matter to me don’t anymore. Things that didn’t matter so much now do. I’ve decided to be intentional in where I place my attention focusing on what’s beautiful and good in the world—not just amazing sunsets and wildlife, but all the times when people just show up for each other.

I used to give my writing students an assignment I called, Somebody Did Me A Solid. I’d ask them to think of a time when someone unexpectedly stepped up and provided something they needed, be it a kind word or some cash money. Everybody has that story.

During the cold snap and ice storm, I was still in Newberg while Ben was here in Manzanita. We only have the one car and when even triple A couldn’t get her started, a good friend came and picked me up, delivering me to my sister’s in time for her birthday—that’s a solid, for sure. When the temperatures dropped and the power went out a few days later, neighbors offered their RV for Ben to sleep in on the coldest night, so he’d be warm. The next day power was restored to everyone on our street except our house because of a downed tree on 3rd. Neighbors offered us room in their fridges and freezers, so we didn’t lose any food. I even saw an invitation to a power outage potluck that a friend in town wanted to host.

Ben did his Ben thing—he checked on the homes of our out of town neighbors to make sure pipes weren’t frozen. He told me how City and County workers were out in force in the cold and ice taking care of business as quick as possible in ugly and dangerous conditions. Look for the helpers, Fred Rogers used to say and man, do we have helpers in our community.

I know all this wasn’t particular to us or to our street.

Back in Newberg on a Sunday night, my sister and I watched an old episode of Grants Getaways on KGW that featured the Smiley Brothers & Sisters Salmon Harvest which harvests, cans, and distributes hatchery coho salmon to the North County Food Bank with the help of a whole bunch of volunteers. After the show was over, my sister asked about our community and I told her about some of the other things we do for each other; like the community garden at the Land Trust which provides hundreds of pounds of produce to low income folks in the villages, and events that are just plain fun like the Christmas tree lighting at Underhill Plaza, the Fourth of July parade, the community theater at NCRD, Pie Day, the apple festival at White Clover Grange, the Polar Plunge. And some of the small individual things people have done like the sewing circle that met every Monday evening for years at my neighbor Bobbie’s home and the outdoor movies and music Kelly Roy hosted this summer on the Dirty Bird lot.

Good people with good ideas making a difference in the lives of others and having fun doing it. Doing a solid for the place and the people in our community. A friend who’s lived here since the 70’s told me people see the possibility to create something here and they make it happen.

That’s how CartM started and that’s how the Heart of CartM continues.

Annie Dillard writes, “How we spend our days is, of course, how we spend our lives. What we do with this hour, and that one, is what we are doing.”

I have some good stuff that need new homes.

1. One gallon of Miller Rosy Cheeks paint (a violet pink color.) I changed my mind on the color before I even opened the can.( I went darker). If you’re interested, email me and I’ll paint a color sample for you.

2. Queen sized box spring and Hollywood frame (metal.) Like new. I’m switching to a platform bed. So get your mattress off the floor. I’ll even throw in a white dust ruffle if you can use it.

Stewardship Day; Winter Planting Event

Winter Planting Event

Help revitalize the campground at Cape Lookout State Park with Oregon State Parks and Friends of Netarts Bay WEBS. We are looking for volunteers to help us plant native vegetation in and around the campground. These plants will act as a barrier between campsites while providing beneficial services to wildlife and the ecosystem.

Lend a hand at digging, plantings, removing non-native vegetation in the restoration areas, and mulching around newly established plants.

If possible, we ask participants to provide their own:
work gloves
hand pruners
shovels (some will be provided by the park)
appropriate gear for the Oregon Coast in February
lunch
reusable water bottle
mug or thermos for hot beverages

Be prepared for dynamic, winter weather on the Oregon coast. This event is family-friendly. Participants are welcome to come for all or any portion of the day that works for their schedule.

This opportunity is an EXPLORE NATURE take-action event! Explore Nature Series events are hosted by a consortium of volunteer community and non-profit organizations, and are meaningful nature-based experiences that highlight the unique beauty of Tillamook County and the work being done to preserve and conserve the area’s natural resources and natural resource-based economy.

We understand everyone learns and experiences the outdoors differently and are open to working with anyone needing additional support. We will adjust the restoration duties to meet the needs of participants, however, we have limited capacity. Please contact us in advance so we can do our best to accommodate your needs and/or find a way for you or your group to have fun participating in our events.

Rockaway Beach CERT training starts Jan. 30

The Rockaway Fire Department and EVCNB (Emergency Volunteer Corps of Nehalem Bay) will present a joint CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) training program over a series of five sessions in February.

The first session is on January 30, from 6 to 8 pm. Following sessions will take place on Tuesday evenings: February 6, 13, 20, and 27 also from 6 to 8 pm at Rockaway Beach Fire Department, 270 S Anchor St, Rockaway Beach OR 97136.

Residents of Rockaway and surrounding areas who are interested in becoming CERT volunteers are invited to attend this training. Contact Geoff Grace at ggrace@corb.us if you wish to participate.

Geoff Grace, Rockaway Fire Department employee and trained CERT, is leading this program. Trained CERT volunteers from EVCNB will be on hand to participate and bring their experience and skills to help teach program attendees.

ISO – Need help digging a hole for my gutter drainage

I need to have a hole dug in my backyard to catch the rainwater from my gutters. Kinda like a fake pond that will slowly perculate down and avoid runoff into the back property.

The dimensions are 4’ deep X 4’ wide X 8’ long.

The dirt from the hole will stay on the property so nothing needs to be hauled away. And I’m on a tight budget.

There are tree roots to work through so I’m sure it’s gonna take some sort of digging smaller scale equipment. At the very least a hefty rototiller & strong back.

Let me know if you have any ideas.

Lee Rocks Painting Party Rescheduled

Come join us for Lee Rocks Painting Party Sunday February 11th from 4-6 at NCRD kitchen.
We will gather to honor Lee and paint rocks with his name on one side and a small symbol of a heart, paw print or something similar on the other side.
When you do something that Lee would have done such as filling up the pet watering station or helping someone in need leave a Lee Rocks there.
If you find one you can pick it up and pass it on leaving it where you do the same.
We will have rocks and supplies available but feel free to bring rocks that are special to you to paint and if you have paint you would like to use feel free to bring that as well.
A huge thank you to NCRD for donating the use of their kitchen for this event, Lori Dillon for donating painting supplies and support, Ginger at North Fork for 53 for donating tea and this amazing community.
There will be tea and snacks. Feel free to bring a snack to share but not required.
We would like to have Lee Rocks available at various locations with signage and have future Lee rocks parties to keep the ripple effect that Lee made on this planet going strong.

The speed will hold a constant 78 RPM. The phonograph is ready to play those old 78 RPMs records that have been stored for many years. It comes with a package of new needles.
