Honey/real VT maple booth wants a new

Submitted By: jwmerc@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
Some of you in north county are already familiar with what I carry in my little “traveling store” (or ‘roadside booth’ as I like to call it) – and now I am searching for a new place to set up on a periodic basis! Given a choice I would like to find myself somewhere between Rockaway Beach and Astoria.
To learn more about my needs/scheduling etc please reach out to me via the provided e-mail: jwmerc@gmail.com – or directly to my phone via text: 208-424-0042. Anyone is free to scroll through the JW Merc Facebook page to see the other items in my booth – the way I present/promote myself etc.
Thanks for any thoughts/suggestions going forward into 2024! JW

Surplus Native Plant Sale

Submitted By: diana@tbnep.org – Click to email about this post
Online Ordering: Opens 6:00 PM on March 22, 2024
Closes 11:59 PM on April 7, 2024

In-Person Event & Pick-up: April 13, 2024, from 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM

This year we are teaming up with our friends at Aldervale Plant Nursery and offering two ways to purchase plants:

Online: get the first pick of our limited stock starting Friday, March 22nd. Follow us on Instagram or Facebook or the website at tbnep.org for updates.

In-person: come peruse our remaining inventory at the nursery in Tillamook on Saturday, April 13th.

The plants at our facility are cultivated from seeds hand-harvested locally along Oregon’s North Coast. This makes them uniquely adapted to thrive in our coastal ecosystems. Native plants play a critical role in restoring habitats to create cleaner water and better habitat for fish, birds, pollinators, and people. Check out our new website page for details.
For the last decade, nursery staff and volunteers have used a temporary porta-john as their only bathroom. Funds from this sale will get us closer to building a hygienic, sustainable, universally accessible bathroom that is more accommodating of the many body types, ability levels, and genders that are welcome at the nursey.

As a “Surplus Plant Sale” all inventory is limited and typically sells at a rapid pace!

Submitted By: cantu4444@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
Come to the Cannon Beach Library for a weekend of amazing writing events! It all starts Friday evening with our 6th annual Writers Read Celebration. Join us March 22nd at 7 p.m. Talented writers will gather to share their works on this year’s theme: “Beach Noir.” From the melancholy to the humorous, hear stories about a ghostly bartender, crustaceans to die for, slovenly detectives, and more – as we celebrate writing, reading, and noir mystery!

Then, come back on Saturday March 23rd, when we will cohost an informal playwriting workshop with the Coaster Theatre Playhouse. Playwright Rob Urbinati will lead the workshop from 3 to 5 p.m. Rob will discuss the craft of playwriting, with a focus on developing ideas for plays, adapting for the stage from other sources, and getting started by writing a 10-minute play. This workshop is open to anyone interested in beginning or furthering their aspirations as a playwright. This is a FREE event being held at the library. No registration is required; show up early to save your spot.

Shutting Down Small Farms in Oregon

Submitted By: genedieken@yahoo.com – Click to email about this post
First off, I’m very much in favor of small farm and animal operations producing high-quality food and thriving. The recent story (1) featured by OPB Radio about a small producer caught up short by existing water rights laws on the books for more than a century is sad and I hope there’s some compromise available.

Generally, water rights are vastly complicated and probably do need periodic refurbishment.

Here’s what scares me about this issue: Once you’ve gone beyond a certain point of being unmindful about water use and abuse, it’s too late and there’s no going back.

I grew up in Iowa, consistently the number one or two ag producer in the U.S. Over the last 50 years the industrialization of farming, repeated boom-bust cycles, mind-boggling federal subsidies, vast use of chemicals, huge build-out of CAFOs (2), and right-wing governance have created a disaster that’s hard to comprehend. Flanked by the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers, Iowa has a vast network of creeks and rivers. All but a few dozen miles are now poisoned with nitrates (as is much groundwater) and the state has the second-highest cancer rate in the country.

“Well, that’s the Midwest!” you say. We’re luckier or maybe just late to the game. The nitrate problems in Umatilla & Morrow Counties (3) are quite similar to Iowa.
