Wings
Wings
Stop and behold
The flying swallow,
Rising and releasing,
Joyfully soaring upwards
To stream back down
To the earth, gravity’s
Grateful companion.
Like the breath
Entering and leaving,
A joy to stop,
And simply witness
Rising and releasing,
The in and out
Of what we know
As a gift or blessing.

Fictional Soap Opera – The Tides of Manzanita
In the unfolding saga of “The Tides of Manzanita, the winds of change begin to gust through the corridors of power, heralding a pivotal confrontation that could alter the course of the town’s history. The stage for this dramatic shift is set at The Cove, the very heart of Manzanita’s whispering winds and murmured secrets.
Under the dim glow of The Cove’s lanterns, the three newest members of the city council—Sophia, Marcus, and Elena—convene in a secluded corner, their faces etched with determination and a hint of apprehension. These are councilors united not by years, but by a shared vision for transparency and a belief in the power of change. Their mission: to challenge the longstanding dominance of Councilor Jed and his unwavering ally, Bart.
As the waves lap gently against the shore outside, the trio’s conversation is fervent, fueled by a blend of idealism and pragmatic concern. “We stand at a crossroads,” Sophia asserts, her voice steady, “between the old guard’s secrecy and a future where transparency guides our governance. This investigation report—the people of Manzanita deserve to know its contents. The mayor should be exonerated. The people deserve to know what their public money went to buy.”
Marcus nods in agreement, his analytical mind racing through potential outcomes. “Jed and Bart have controlled the narrative for too long. It’s time we leverage our collective vote to champion the truth. The cost of silence has been $160,000 and counting. It’s unjustifiable, and for what?”
Elena, the most reserved of the trio, adds, “We must tread carefully, yet boldly. The city manager, let alone Jed and Bart, won’t take kindly to being overruled. We’re risking not just our political futures but possibly our personal safety. After all they engineered the mayor’s exit.”
Marcus added, “Funding the report may have been part of the strategy. Hold this never ending investigation over the mayor’s head until they forced a resignation. Now they don’t need the report so they are burying it. The mayor was innocent, but the powers that be just don’t care.”
Elena says, “But our three votes can change that. We can vote to reveal the report and there’s nothing they can do about it.”
“Well, I doubt Jed will take this lying down. Remember, he put us in this job when there were vacant seats.” Marcus said.
Amidst their clandestine strategy session, Ruby, the observant server with a now well-established connection to the town’s undercurrents of intrigue, moves silently around their table. Her presence is unobtrusive, yet her keen ears miss nothing. The plan unfolding before her resonates with the courage and conviction she’s come to admire in those who seek to unveil the truth of Manzanita.
Emboldened by their shared resolve, Sophia, Marcus, and Elena sketched out their next steps. They agree to draft a resolution for the upcoming council meeting, calling for the release of the investigation report and a detailed accounting of the legal expenses incurred. Their plan is a glimmer of hope in the murky waters of Manzanita’s politics, a testament to their belief in a more transparent and accountable governance.
As the meeting adjourns, the weight of their decision hangs heavily in the air. The fear of retribution is palpable, a silent specter that accompanies them as they depart The Cove. Yet, there is a stronger force at play—a unifying courage that binds them together. They recognize the road ahead will be fraught with challenges, but the promise of a brighter future for Manzanita propels them forward.
Ruby, having witnessed the birth of this bold endeavor, feels a surge of optimism. Her role as an ally to those who seek the truth has never been more critical. As she clears the table, her mind races with possibilities. The alliance she’s formed with Victoria and Shirley now seems poised to welcome new allies in the quest to reveal the council’s lies and illuminate the path to justice.
“The episode closes with the three councilors stepping out into the night, the moon casting long shadows as they navigate the uncertain terrain ahead. Unobserved was a dark figure watching from the side of the parking area, watching the trio of councilors. The stage is set for a showdown that will require not just political savvy but profound bravery, as they confront the entrenched powers that be.
Manzanita, a town accustomed to the quiet ebb and flow of the tides, finds itself on the brink of a tempest. The actions of Sophia, Marcus, and Elena promise to usher in a wave of change, challenging the status quo and daring to dream of a governance as transparent as the waters that surround their beloved town. The battle lines are drawn, and surge ever onward, carrying with them the hopes and fears of a community at the crossroads of destiny. Tune in next week for Episode 6 of “The Tides of Manzanita.”

Calling All Artists, Storytellers, Designers, Creatives
25 YEARS OF TRASHY FUN – TRASH BASH IS SOON
WHERE? White Clover Grange #784, Nehalem, Oregon
WHEN? Thursday, May 16 to Sunday, May 19, 2024
SUBMIT INTEREST BY: May 1st
www.heartofcartm.org
From Thursday, May 16 to Sunday, May 19, 2024, we will gather in Nehalem, OR, at the White Clover Grange for an unforgettable extravaganza of the senses as the Trash Bash celebrates its 25th anniversary with a Trash, Boom, BANG!
Under the banner of “Rising from the Trashes” storytellers, visual artists, community activists, musicians, and runway trashion models will show off their creativity and passion for the natural beauty that surrounds us and the environment we’re passionate about preserving by turning trash into art! Should you be there? Absolutely!
Each artist puts their own unique spin on the experience and “you walk away with a sense of common purpose with a community of people” says Jennifer Nightingale, an Astoria-based novelist and storyteller who has returned to the Trash Bash to tell trash-inspired tales again and again. “When I come to the Trash Bash, I feel understood . . . I’ve never participated in any group where I felt so instantly welcomed.”
What do all of the participants have in common? “They take great delight in our natural world and,” as Nightingale stresses, “if you don’t fight for it, it won’t be here. The interesting thing about the trash bash is,” she goes on, “that there are moments of humor, pathos . . . the experience really runs the gamut of emotions—but in the end, it’s fun. The feeling that runs throughout is JOY.”
A writer and storyteller from Astoria, OR, Nightingale and her husband adopted a stretch of river beach eight years ago that they clean up several days a week. This experience and the trash she has collected by doing so over the years inspired her most recent Trash Bash tale. But participation is not limited to storytellers alone! Visual artists, fashion models, musicians, passionate volunteers, and community activists are all encouraged to get involved: “Just bring whatever gifts you have.”
“By participating,” Nightingale reflects, “it changes your response to trash. It heightens your empathy, your careful skills of observation. It helps you value trash and see all of its potential. It helps you walk away with a new perspective: Can you find the story inside the trash? Can it be repurposed somehow? Each item of trash tells a story. You’ll learn to see in new ways, beyond the item’s initial purpose.”
Why should you participate? Nightingale doesn’t hesitate, “It’s very meaningful. No matter what [which art form] you do, you’re telling a story. We all have to step up and do a little piece.” Maybe best of all, by participating and submitting your work of art/story/trashion, it’s a way to love the Coast back: “I love it here,” Nightingale gushes. “I love the power of the Coast. The rivers and estuaries. To be with a community of people who care for the well-being of this community is just AWESOME!”
If that’s you too, we would love to see your trash craft or hear your trashy story!

Together we are Rising from the Trashes, to leave our hearts a little more full and our landfills a little more empty.

Community Member seeking honest work
My name is Bill Miller and I’m still fairly new to the area. I am currently working as a vet technician at Nehalem Animal Healing Center. I now own my first cat “Angel”, and have loved animals all my life. Working at the vet is a part-time opportunity, and I have been doing odd jobs on the side to help make a living.
I am friendly, compassionate, a very hard worker, and I pay close attention to detail. I’ve mostly been doing landscaping and house cleaning since moving to the coast. I currently reside in Nehalem, near the Animal Rescue. I always come to work with a positive attitude. I have 11 years of experience in the restaurant industry so I am no stranger to hard labor and cleanliness. I have gone through extensive training, including serve safe certification. If I am hired as a cleaner I make sure to use proper products and procedures. No matter what, I make sure the job is done right the first time!
I am primarily looking for yard work jobs in the area, as I love to work outdoors, however I am willing to clean kitchens, bathrooms, living rooms, you name it. We are never to good to do a job, even if it’s dirty. I work quickly, efficiently and ask for very reasonable compensation. If there are pets involved I am more than happy to help take care of them as well! I am a natural with all types of animals, and I am trained to do nail trims as an additional service if needed. If anyone is in need of a reliable, honest, hardworking guy to help out at home, please feel free to reach out to me on here. Also my personal cell phone is fine (413) 695-2215! You may also contact me via email at, xmiller1324@gmail.com. Thank you so much for your time and I look forward to hearing from you!
Best Wishes, Sincerely, Bill Miller

Falun Gong-The Epoch news, and The SHENYU Dancers
Falun Gong sources estimate that tens of millions continue to practice privately, and Freedom House estimates there are seven to 20 million practitioners world wide.”
Li Hongzhi is the founder and leader of Falun Gong, or Falun Dafa, a United States-based new religious movement. Li began his public teachings on Falun Gong on 13 May 1992 in Changchun, and subsequently gave lectures and taught Falun Gong exercises across China. Falun Gong also started the EPOCH TIMES and the SHEN YU Dance Company.
Walk into Chinatown in any big Western city, and on the main street you are likely to find a row of seated meditators, their legs crossed and backs straight. Seemingly innocuous, they could easily pass for participants in a yoga class. In fact, the meditators are practicing a prescribed set of exercises from Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline which China banned in 1999 and calls an “evil cult”. Along with Tibetans, Uighur Muslims, democracy activists and pro-independence Taiwanese, Falun Gong practitioners round off the “five poisons”—risks which the Chinese government has acknowledged as posing the biggest threat to its rule. What is Falun Gong?
Falun Gong, which means “law wheel practice” in Chinese, is a set of meditation exercises and texts that preach the virtues of truth, benevolence and forbearance. It was founded in north-east China in 1992 by Li Hongzhi. Falun Gong draws on China’s long tradition of qigong, a regimen of controlled breathing and gentle physical movements. Practitioners of Falun Gong avow a path to salvation for the faithful.
They also are the group starting the EPOCH TIMES and the SHEN YU dancers.
