Correction to Manzanita Talks with Councilors

In Manzanita Talks with Councilors, posted on May 10th, incorrect data was used when comparing Manzanita’s permanent tax rate ($0.42/1000) with Bay City’s. Bay City’s permanent tax rate is $1.5375/1000.
It is likely that the number Mr. Kuestner used included our operating levy for fire services, which is not a relative comparative for Manzanita, since Manzanita is part of NBFR.
TLT is also not a relative comparative, since Bay City’s much-lower TLT revenues are all subject to the 70-30 split, whereas some of Manzanita’s are grandfathered and can be used for general services and operations.

While each of our cities is unique, we face similar challenges in terms of trying to balance budgets and identify additional funding to maintain (and improve) the services we provide.

United Paws of Tillamook is looking for good Volunteer Fosters for beautiful kittens & cats who have been rescued and need a safe and loving place until we find their forever homes. Can you help? United Paws trains Volunteer Fosters and supplies them with kitten/cat food, medical needs, supplies, and emotional support.

Over the years, United Paws has helped thousands of kittens and cats in Tillamook County who needed homes and medical care. This year, the need has exploded. In the past 2 weeks alone, United Paws has taken in more than 50 kittens and pregnant Mamas who were abandoned, dumped, or born without a home. ALL of our Volunteer Fosters’ homes are full and we need more help! Can you step up and help us by becoming a Volunteer Foster? All you need is an extra room in your home, a willingness to make a difference, and we will help you with the rest.

Rick Estrin and the Nightcats at NCRD on June 23

It’s time to celebrate with great music and for a great cause on June 23rd. 

The Nehalem Bay Health Center in partnership with the Nehalem Bay Health District and North Coast Music Project present Rick Estrin and The Nightcats at the NCRD Performing Arts Center. The band has just completed a new album entitled The Hits Keep Coming and we are lucky to be part of a tour that includes dates in Europe.

Construction on the new Nehalem Bay Health Center in Wheeler is scheduled to begin in mid-July and this benefit concert will help ensure that this great new community facility will be all it can be. 

ALL proceeds from the Rick Estrin show will benefit the “finishing touches” needed for the new Health Center. A $100 VIP ticket will give you a great seat for the show, as you also contribute to the vision of improved health and senior care on the north coast. General admission seats are also available for $35.

You’ll also be the first to hear some exciting news about the new Health Center. 

Don’t miss the show on June 23rd at the NCRD Performing Arts Center. A pre-concert wine and beer reception will begin at 2:00 pm. The music starts at 3:00 pm

On Sunday, most everything at the Nehalem Bay Garden Club Plant Sale will be 1/2 price! Help us find homes for all those plant babies!

The sale starts at 10 and ends at noon.

The location is at 43080 North Fork Rd, Nehalem, at the junction of Hwy 53 and North Fork Rd with horse statues in the front yard and real horses in the back yard! Start on North Fork Rd, at the blinking light in Nehalem and go 5 miles to the end of North Fork Road. The sale is on the left. Note, at the blinking light in Nehalem, North Fork Rd is called 7th St .

The drawing for the raffle items will be held at noon at the end of the sale. Raffle items include a crepe myrtle catawba tree, a basket of garden goodies, an outdoor palm tree and a garden statue. Tickets are $5 each or 6 for $20. Proceeds are donated to local organizations that share the Club’s mission. Since 2020, the Club has awarded a total of $12,300 in grants.

The Previously Owned Art Sale for the Nehalem Food Pantry fund raiser extends through Friday, May 31 at the NCRD Gallery in Nehalem.

NCRD is located at 36155 Ninth St., in Nehalem. The Gallery and Welcome Center are open Monday through Friday from 8 am to 5 pm. However it is end of year event season and the Gallery may be in use.

If coming from out of town, please call the Welcome Center at 855-444-6273 to make sure the Gallery is open to the public.

Come see Zachary Stocks, the Executive Director of Oregon Black Pioneers, present to you tales of Black pioneers on Oregon’s Coast. Zachary has a long resume of service to museums and to the National Park Service. He is an accomplished scholar and Oregon Black Pioneers has received great recognition through the Oregon Heritage Commission. This promises to be a fascinating presentation.

The show will start at 3:30 on Saturday afternoon at NCRD’s Performing Arts Center. The fee is $10 at the door. Hope to see you there.

Hello Conscious Aging and Community Connection Friends,

The goal of the Conscious Aging and Community Connections Program is to bring people in our community together to get to know one another at a deeper level and to encourage one another to live our best possible lives.

The Conscious Aging and Community Connections Program is held on the second Monday of each month from 2-4pm. This program is sponsored by Pine Grove Community House which allows us to keep admission at $ 5 per session. All money received goes directly to Pine Grove.

Everyone is welcome to join us.

Monday, May 13, 2-4 pm join us for a presentation by Kathie Hightower, on Awe/Delight/Joy/Savoring: Why it’s SO important, especially now, and ways to add these experiences into your daily life. Believe it or not, researchers have done extensive research studies on Awe and Joy and Savoring. Join us to learn why these topics matter to you, especially as we age, and learn simple exercises to add more of these into your own daily life. Let’s choose the antidote to the current negative news spiral. Choose Joy. Here’s how.

Kathie dove into this subject many years ago and in fact published a small book on Simple Joys. She returned to study more current research to prepare this presentation for you. Kathie spent many years traveling the world, doing keynotes and workshops on topics like Jump Into Life, and Joyful Living. This is a mini-presentation.

DON’T FORGET: Bring a pen and a book or magazine to write on…we’ll have handouts ready for you to fill in.

Doors open at 145. Program starts right at 2pm.

This item needed for just a week, is one that inserts
into a 2 inch receiver on an SUV. We won’t have over 200 pounds on it, maybe even half that.
Just need a bit more room so the vehicle isn’t overloaded. Our hope is that somebody in BBQ land has one sitting collecting dust somewhere. We would need to pick it up by May17 latest.
May even opt to purchase afterwards, if that’s your desire.

EXCELLENT COMPOST/MULCH

Dry Straw with some aged duck poop and duck feather molt mixed in. I am told by the organic vegetable farmer that used to get it from me that it is superb for the 60% brown material that compost piles need. Or it can be used as a mulch.

The person who appreciated it in the past has moved out of the area. I am looking for someone to haul this batch away. Location is Bayside Gardens/Nehalem. A pickup can be driven close to where you will load it. I have a wheelbarrow available to use if you have a small pickup and boards for a ramp. A small pickup bed is adequate to hall it.

Load and haul it away and it is yours for free. My two ducks were taken in broad daylight by an unknown predator seven months ago so the material should be dry and easy to load since it is in their duck house and not exposed to weather.
