OpenAI, SoftBank, and Oracle (yes, the same company that screwed our state with the failed “Cover Oregon” website) want to use us in their pursuit of ever more profits. And they don’t care a whit about us or the State of Oregon. They want cheap power to run AI data centers that will violate our privacy and drive up our electrical bills.
Think AI is good for us? Not the way tech companies are scrambling to use it, and that would create the majority of demand for AI. Here’s a good article on ways that AI can actually help society:

As a volunteer at LNCT’s Alder Creek Farm, you’ll enjoy garden training and education, harvest sharing, and grow plant donations for local food scarcity partners. Our season runs from late February through October with “work parties” Tuesdays and Saturdays from 9am – noon, rain or shine.

The light of day was gone.Â
It was to honor a birthday
that we were at the Lighthouse,
a local tavern and gathering place.
An unknown to me, you were sittingÂ
by yourself at the bar, a stranger.Â
When I came up to the bar,
what you saw and apparently imagined,Â
was not what was actually there.
For your own reasons you were
wanting to hurt, get down, forget.
Not for you and you alone did I
refuse to kiss your angry, drunkenÂ
axe, dismiss or ignore all the timesÂ
you were wronged, not heard,Â
demeaned, all the times you wereÂ
frightened, contracted, confused.
Full of party intentions, I was wearingÂ
my favorite old coat, unraveling a bit,Â
threadbare, and apparently from somewhere
in Bolivia. When you asked if I was homeless
it was clear you believed I had no right
or reason to be at the bar, the gathering,
or occupy space at all. It was all so sad
and familiar. A response was needed but
not available. When I answered the fistÂ
of your question, “Are you homeless,”Â
I could not sanction nor join anotherÂ
confused distraction, nor supportÂ
the ignorance that brought this violenceÂ
to you that you were now bringing to me.Â
My answer, “Not at this time.” could never
quiet what was burning in you and the uncertainÂ
tightening of this difficult meeting continued
in ways I have now completely forgotten.Â
Finally a person I never saw, claiming to know
each of us, said something that allowed you
to let go, begin to settle down. I was gratefulÂ
that at least on this night, self-loathingÂ
quieted, no blood would be lost.

Musician Carol Shepherd will be here to provide percussive accompaniment to the story “Tanka Tanka Skunk” by author Steve Webb. This book is full of rhyme and rhythm, making it great for reading aloud with a group. After the reading, children will have time to play a variety of percussion instruments while learning about drums, the tambourine, and rhythm sticks!
This event is recommended for ages 3-5. Thank you to the North Oregon Coast Symphony for making these wonderful storytimes possible!

– Previous experience working with children, preferably in an educational setting.
– Passion for nature and environmental education.
– Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
– Ability to adapt quickly to varying classroom situations and student needs.
– CPR and First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain).
Key Responsibilities:
– Follow and implement lesson plans provided by the regular teacher.
– Create a safe, engaging, and supportive learning environment.
– Lead outdoor activities, nature walks, and hands-on projects.
– Foster a sense of curiosity and respect for the environment among students.
– Manage classroom behavior and ensure adherence to school policies.
– Communicate effectively with students, staff, and parents.

Offering the basics, Becky Chappell is an accomplished artist and instructor of pastel painting.
Students will need to bring pastels… an inexpensive small set or whatever you have; pastel paper (preferably sanded paper); gloves if you choose, and a rag or paper towels.
