Reply to dixiedarrow@icloud.com I disagree that Javadi mistrusts mail in voting in Oregon

Submitted By: barbaraandchuck@nehalemtel.net – Click to email about this post
Dixie,
Here is a quote from your post I (Barbara McLaughlin) find VERY MISLEADING.

“That was a very good article written by Cyrus Javadi about distrust in our vote by mail election system. I explain the distrust.”

This implies to me that Javadi mistrusts mail in voting in Oregon. Quite the opposite is true.

Here are a couple of quotes from Javadi’s post:
“A 2020 analysis by Oregon’s Legislative Fiscal Office found 38 criminal convictions for voter fraud across 20 years and nearly 61 million ballots cast in Oregon. That works out to roughly 0.000006 percent.
Thirty-eight. Out of 61 million. (How can you not be impressed by that?)”

“Scale matters.
If the problem is microscopic, the solution should be proportionate. Tighten safeguards where needed. Improve auditing. Improve transparency. Improve public confidence.
What you don’t do is redesign the whole system around a statistical speck and then congratulate yourself for saving the republic.”

“Fix what needs fixing. Make it more transparent. Make it easier to understand. Make it easier for lawful citizens to vote. Make it harder for anyone to cheat. That is the standard.
Don’t burn the system down because people are afraid. Fear is useful for spotting danger. It is much less useful for drafting policy.”

Here are some other excerpts from Javadi’s post:

What People Are Actually Afraid Of

Some people are convinced that any ballot counted after Election Day must be suspicious. Some think voter rolls are packed with dead voters, noncitizens, or ghosts with forwarding addresses. Some argue that if a person can make it to Costco, they can make it to a polling place. Others treat convenience itself as proof of corruption.
Underneath all of it is the same assumption: if voting is easy, cheating must be easy too. And that sounds reasonable right up until you think about it for more than six seconds.
I mean, sure, a front door is easy to open with the right key. But, that doesn’t mean the prudent next step is a moat, a drawbridge, and armed sentries asking for your baptism certificate.
No. The real question is not whether voting should be easy or hard as some kind of moral test. The real question is whether it is easy for lawful voters and hard for cheaters.
That should be the standard every time. Voting should be easy, but hard to cheat.

Oregon Didn’t Dream This Up Last Tuesday

A 2003 survey found 81 percent support for Oregon’s vote-by-mail system, including 85 percent of Democrats and 76 percent of Republicans. Oh, and this fun fact: thirty percent said they voted more often after it was enacted.

Security Matters. Hysteria Doesn’t Help.
Now for the part that irritates the absolutists—
Concern about election security is not crazy.
Of course voter rolls should be accurate. Of course signatures should be checked. Of course chain of custody matters. Of course deadlines should be clear. Of course the public should have confidence that lawful ballots are counted and unlawful ballots are not.
But seriousness about security does not require melodrama.

The Numbers Are Not on the Side of Panic

This is where the argument gets awkward for people who talk as though every mailbox in America is an active crime scene.
A 2020 analysis by Oregon’s Legislative Fiscal Office found 38 criminal convictions for voter fraud across 20 years and nearly 61 million ballots cast in Oregon. That works out to roughly 0.000006 percent.
Thirty-eight. Out of 61 million. (How can you not be impressed by that?)
And, the Brookings Institution later found that nationally, mail-voting fraud occurred at an average rate of about four cases per 10 million votes, or roughly 0.000043 percent.
None of that means fraud never happens. It does. Human beings will cheat at anything that offers power, money, or a free toaster.
But scale matters.
If the problem is microscopic, the solution should be proportionate. Tighten safeguards where needed. Improve auditing. Improve transparency. Improve public confidence.
What you don’t do is redesign the whole system around a statistical speck and then congratulate yourself for saving the republic.

Why the SAVE Act Gets It Wrong

That is why the SAVE America Act worries me.
On paper, it sounds simple. Require documentary proof of citizenship to register to vote. Easy. Clean. Tough. Politically marketable.
But life is not lived on paper.
People change their names. People misplace documents. People don’t have passports. People don’t spend their weekends cheerfully digging through old file boxes to prove to the government that they are, in fact, who the government already generally knows they are.
Only about half of Americans have passports. Critics have also warned that married women whose legal names differ from their birth certificates could face particular problems.
And the broader problem is obvious: if you pile enough documentation requirements onto voting, you will absolutely make it harder for some ineligible people to get through. You will also make it harder for a much larger number of eligible people to get through.
That is not targeted reform.
A good election reform should solve a real problem in a targeted way without sweeping lawful voters into the same trap. Too much of this legislation fails that test.

1940s-‘50s unused, as-new 50 page Guest Log, $35
“The vintage Three Mountaineers wooden guest log is a collectible rustic stationery item produced by Three Mountaineers, Inc. of Asheville, North Carolina. Known for their “primitive” or “wormwood” aesthetic, these books were popular from the late 1930s through the mid-20th century.
Key Features
* Materials: Typically features heavy solid wood covers (often pine or walnut tones) bound with leather thongs or strings.
* Aesthetic: Many versions utilize a “wormholed” or distressed finish to create an aged, rustic appearance.
* Designs: Common cover motifs include hand-painted or stamped illustrations such as donkeys, cacti, or nature scenes.
* Interior: Standard logs often contain approximately 30 to 50 pages for signatures and comments.
Market Value & Availability
These items are frequently found on vintage marketplaces like eBay and Etsy.
* Price Range: Generally ranges from $20 to $50, depending on condition and whether the original pages are intact.
* Condition Note: It is common to find these with the original pages removed or used; however, the leather-tied binding makes it easy to insert new paper for modern use at weddings or cabins.
Company Background
Founded in 1933, Three Mountaineers, Inc.originally sold handmade crafts before transitioning to full-scale wood manufacturing in 1940. While they are most famous for their “Friends”-style wall spice racks, their wooden-bound books—including guest logs, “Here’s How” cocktail books, and scrapbooks—are highly sought after by collectors of mid-century Americana.”

NO KINGS3 A HUGE SUCCESS

Submitted By: pattyrinehart@nehalemtel.net – Click to email about this post
Hello Friends,

Thanks to so many of you, NO KINGS3 in Manzanita was a huge success. We were 755 people strong, but if you consider the people who went by in cars, waving and hollering out as many windows that could, we were much more than that number. We are a crowd of old, middle aged, young, and children. We are a crowd of people showing our government we are not happy and we want change.

And always the question comes up “what good do you think you are doing?” I personally can’t imagine doing anything better, except for letting our government, elected officials know we are not happy with what is going on. We elected these people by giving them our vote and now feel like they have turned against us. They have turned against us by not stopping Trump, his War, his obvious disregard for both the people that voted for him and the people who voted against him.

Type a question into your browser-how much does it cost for Trump to travel in our Boeing 747 between Washington D.C. and Mara-Lago. Answers come up anywhere from $200,000 per hour to 1 million dollars per round trip. So, let’s now compare this with our local gas going up to $5.15/gallon for regular gas. This should infuriate everyone! We are told by Trump to just “suck it up”. Sad, sad, sad.

So, yes, keep protesting, keep writing your letters, help people and we will find our way out of this. Don’t give up!
Best,
Patty

vote by mail rabbit hole

Submitted By: dwieb1@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
We have so many obvious problems requiring attention, from war to economic disparity and affordability, long broken immigration system to business monopolies and oligarchs subverting our government.

Do we really need deceptive rhetoric leading us down a rabbit hole? The singular reason for distrust of vote by mail is Trump’s ruse, which he instigated years ago for his own selfish corrupt purposes. The political landscape over the past decade is full of evidence that he is doing this on purpose. Nobody should still be falling for it, but somehow his con is so effective that many still do.

The old saying “fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me” comes to mind. Here we have been fooled countless times. This should be embarassing if it weren’t so serious.

Claims in a ruse are made up, so debating them is useless, instead providing a kind of legitimacy to the ruse. Many of us are eager to voice opinions. In this case let it be that we are sick and tired of being played for fools.

North Oregon Coast Symphony Offers Preschool Story Time With Live Music

Bring your preschooler to hear a classic song come alive with this month’s North Oregon Coast Symphony’s free Musical Storytime. This program includes a hands-on musical activity. The featured story will be I Love You a Bushel and a Peck written by Frank Loesser and illustrated by Rosemary Wells. The event will feature a live viola accompaniment by NOCS musician Britton Pierce. Children will hear about two ducklings who like each other – a lot! With vibrant illustrations and a catchy song this book is sure to be a favorite for children and adults.

The second book will be Mole Music by David McPhail with beautiful illustrations. In this story, Mole hears the sweet sound of a violin. “I want to make beautiful music, too,” Mole claims. Mole practices and practices and over time has quite an impact on people around him. Afterwards preschoolers will take part in making their own music just like Mole with provided violins. The violins used in this program were purchased through a grant funded by Clatsop County Cultural Coalition and Oregon Cultural Trust. We thank both organizations for their generosity.

The program will be held at 10:30 Monday, April 6 at the North Tillamook Library in Manzanita.

The free readings for children ages 2 to 5 are planned monthly in partnership with the Astoria Library, North Tillamook Library in Manzanita, and the Seaside Library. Funding for the instruments used in this month’s outreach program come from Clatsop County Cultural Coalition and Oregon Cultural Trust. We thank both organizations for their generosity.

A reply to Cyrus Javadi – distrust in vote by mail

Submitted By: dixiedarrow@icloud.com – Click to email about this post
That was a very good article written by Cyrus Javadi about distrust in our vote by mail election system. I explain the distrust.
In Oregon we used to vote by going to our local precinct. My husband and I would go, vote, and then go out to dinner. By late evening we would know who won the election unless the vote was close.
Then we got vote by mail – that made it so much easier and also less special and it took a lot longer for votes to be counted. It took a lot longer to know who won.
Why is there a lack of trust in our elections?
Well, the first little thing was that a previous secretary of state, and I can’t remember which one now, assured Oregon citizens that the computers that counted the votes were not hackable.
But as she testified in court later, the computers WERE hackable!! So a little distrust with that! Why lie?
Judicial watch recently sued Oregon because they were not following the law in regarding the maintenance of voter roles to remove those who were invalid, died or moved away. Why didn’t Oregon follow the laws in regard to maintenance? There were apparently 800,000 invalid voter registrations! There is a federal law that states that to vote in a federal election, the state must have voter rolls that are accurate and up to date.
There is a real problem with DMV registering people to vote.
That is half of the problem. Here is an article from OPB that tells about this: Oregon’s voter registration errors stretch back further than DMV officials initially indicated: www.opb.org/article/2025/04/11/vote
There are many problems with mail in voting that simply don’t exist with voting in person. Here is a good article by Heritage Foundation that list percentages of lost in mail ballots, etc:
Title: We Shouldn’t Be Promoting voting By Mail
www.heritage.org/election-integrity/commentary/we-shouldnt-be-promoting-voting-mail
I conclude this article that by saying there is good reason to be distrustful of outcomes when citizens vote by mail.

Apparently the state of Oregon is very sloppy with producing accurate vote counts with its mail in vote program, while simultaneously assuring us that it does.

If you find a chrome carabiner with three keys, please contact me! Thanks for looking.

Save our elections by Representative Cyrus Javadi

Submitted By: barbaraandchuck@nehalemtel.net – Click to email about this post
Here is a Substack post by Representative Cyrus Javadi

cyrusjavadior.substack.com/p/save-our-elections

This is his intro–the whole thing is too long to include here but is well worth the read. He actually uses common sense and is a good writer.

Barbara McLaughlin

Not long after I announced my run for State Representative in 2022, I found myself at Arnie’s on Main Street in Warrenton, Oregon making my case to the Clatsop County Republican Party faithful.
Yes, the Republican Party. I was a Republican then. I became a Democrat later. The short version is that I wanted my party registration to reflect my convictions. For the long version, read my reasons here.
Now, if you know Arnie’s, you know the kind of place I’m talking about. Good food. A little nostalgic. The sort of diner where the coffee is hot, the chicken fried steak is a miracle-on-a-plate, and the opinions come preloaded.
The meeting started, and it was my turn to answer questions. One came quickly.
What did I think about ending vote by mail? My answer was simple then. It is still simple now.
I didn’t have a problem with vote by mail. What I had a problem with was distrust.
Because that was the real issue in the room that night. Not envelopes. Not stamps. Not even party, really. It was trust. Or more precisely, the lack of it.
For a lot of people, vote by mail is no longer just an election system. It’s a symbol. A tribal marker. A Rorschach test with postage.
________________________________________
Why This Matters Right Now
This debate is back for three reasons: the Supreme Court is hearing a vote-by-mail case, Congress is considering the SAVE America Act, and Donald Trump just voted by mail after spending years talking about it like it was the electoral equivalent of money laundering.
That would already make the subject worth revisiting.
But there is also something revealing about the timing. Americans are getting hammered by the cost of groceries, gas, housing, and insurance, and Washington has once again decided that election procedure is the hill to charge.
Election rules matter. Of course they do. But if we are going to change them, we should at least be honest about the problem we are solving, the tradeoffs we are making, and how many lawful voters we may shove out of the process along the way.
Which means the first step is separating the myths from the mechanics.

United Paws’ Cat of the Week: Meet Angie

Submitted By: Website@unitedpaws.org – Click to email about this post
Meet Angie, aka Angel Eyes, United Paws’ Cat of the Week.

Angie is a beautiful tan and gray tabby with fluffy, soft fur, a white chin, a pink nose, and sparkly green eyes surrounded by stripes which make her look like she has long eyelashes!
Sadly, Angie’s owners had to move and could not take her with them. It has been a rough and confusing time for her, but since she has been receiving loving care with the foster team at United Paws, Angie’s sweet personality continues to shine.
Although she certainly lives up to her given name of “Angel Eyes,” she prefers “Angie” and even knows her name!! This petite sweetheart has an endearing quality of “chirping or trilling” rather than speaking in traditional “meows”!! In addition, Angie is affectionate, curious, and independent. She loves to play a little bit each day, but her foster describes her as “generally low maintenance.”
When it is playtime, Angie loves anything attached to a wand!! She chases mice toys and enjoys batting around felt balls or ping pongs. Angie is not much of a “lap kitty” (yet) but when it is naptime or nighttime, she always sleeps close to her human. When it is time for a cat bath, Angie grooms herself daily but loves to be brushed. Her long hair is fun to brush and comb! She doesn’t mind being picked up or handled, she loves to scratch on her scratching posts and she always uses her litter box. She is learning to enjoy different kinds of wet food, but so far, Angie mostly enjoys her dry crunchies.
The ideal home for Angie will be with an experienced pet owner who will give this sweet girl plenty of time to adjust and relax in her new surroundings. A slow introduction to friendly cats or a gentle dog will most likely result in new friendships. Once Angie feels safe and secure, knowing she is in her forever home, she will reward you with chirps, trills, and be a sweet and affectionate companion making your happy home complete.
