Launching New Wellness Classes: Yoga & Qigong

Submitted By: tolovanaartscolony@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
We’re excited to announce two new classes at the Arts Colony: Yoga and Qigong. Alongside our amazing Dance Fitness classes, we’re now offering movement/wellness classes five days a week!

Taught by the experienced Shelley Behrman, Winter Yoga & Soothing Sound takes place every Tuesday and Thursday at 5:30pm. Through gentle yoga practices, Shelley’s class helps release the stress of the day from your body and mind. The class combines movement, stretching, breath work, meditation and sound baths to unwind and relax. This is an all levels class with the option to be fully supported with a chair. Please bring a yoga mat and any other props you may need to be comfortable.

On Mondays (at 5:30pm) and Fridays (at 6:30pm), Scott Johnson’s Qigong Class offers a different kind of centering. “Qigong is both calming and vitalizing,” Scott says. “Your stress transforms into vitality.” Modeled on teachings of Taoist Master Manak Chia, Qigong uses calming practices—such as breathing and simple movements—to build strength and energy. Scott assures potential students that the class is accessible for all ages and fitness levels and includes “no acrobatics.” He adds that Qigong boosts health, including heart and kidney function. Chair options are also available. He asks you bring a yoga mat and clean socks. No experience is necessary, and if you feel like checking out Qigong for the first time, the first class is free. Qigong kicks off its first class this Friday, January 31st.

Each class is $15 per session. Financial support/sponsorship is available—just ask.

Can we have a blocklist option?

Look. I get it. Community board, everyone can say there bit. My issue is the constant political garbage that Dixie Darrow spews up on this community board. It’s like watching someone walk in, throw up all over the floor and walk out.

Maybe there can be an option to have a Political category since she insists on it so much? And then the option to block notifications from certain categories?

Alright. Feel free to send me hate mail now.

Where Have All The Sea Otters Gone?

Submitted By: maijahecht@nehalemtrust.org – Click to email about this post
Oregon once had a flourishing population of sea otters. Since about 1910, we have had none. What happened?

Join us on Wednesday evening at the Pine Grove Community House in Manzanita for a presentation by Cameron La Follette, a coastal historian and the Executive Director of Oregon Coast Alliance. Her overview of the history of the fur trade and local hunting in Oregon will trace the disappearance of our sea otters, how it happened, and who some of the major players were. Doors open at 5:30PM and the presentation will begin at 6PM. We hope to see you there!

Adventist Health Tillamook Introduces Chronic Pain Management Group

Submitted By: hayjj@ah.org – Click to email about this post
Adventist Health Tillamook shares the launch of their upcoming Chronic Pain Management Group, a comprehensive program designed to provide individuals with tools and strategies to manage chronic pain effectively and the potential to regain control of their lives. This 8-week program, guided by evidence-based practices, offers participants a deeper understanding of their pain while fostering long-term well-being.

Chronic pain impacts millions of lives, often leading to diminished quality of life and reliance on costly treatments such as medications or surgeries. The MAPS Program — which stands for Movement, Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT), Pain Science and Self-Compassion — focuses on a holistic approach that addresses not only the physical but also the psychological and social aspects of pain.

“This program is about more than managing pain,” said Tim Patching, Doctor of Occupational Therapy at Adventist Health Tillamook, the group facilitator and an experienced specialist in rehabilitation services. “It’s about empowering individuals to reduce discomfort, enhance their well-being and reclaim the activities they love while exploring alternatives to medications or invasive procedures.”
Program Highlights
Participants will engage in a lifestyle-centered approach that blends movement practices, mindfulness and self-compassion techniques with the latest in pain science. The program also emphasizes practical tools for daily life, equipping participants to better understand and manage their pain.

Who Should Join
The Chronic Pain Management Group is open to individuals experiencing persistent pain who are ready to explore new ways to address and alleviate their discomfort. Participants will gain insights into the bio-mechanical, psychological and sociological factors influencing their pain and learn strategies to improve their quality of life.

How to Participate
Ask your healthcare provider for more information or request a referral to the program. If you have questions or want to learn more, you can also contact Tim Patching, OTD, at PatchiTR@ah.org.
Location and Schedule

The group will meet once a week for eight weeks. Location and time are currently to be determined based on group size.

Why This Matters
Chronic pain affects not just the body but also the mind and spirit. Engaging in structured programs like MAPS has been shown to reduce stress, foster relaxation and improve overall heart and mental health. Participants in this program will discover how to live more fulfilling lives despite their pain, with the ultimate goal of reducing dependency on medications or surgeries. “Adventist Health Tillamook is committed to helping our community thrive,” added Patching. “This program exemplifies our mission of inspiring health, wholeness and hope.”

The Color Purple #2

I was surprised that the presidential candidate I voted for won the election! Out of curiosity, I checked to see which candidate won in Tillamook County and again to my surprise it was Trump! A friend said to me “didn’t you know Tillamook County was Republican! I didn’t! I am an independent voter, formally Democrat!

So out of curiosity I checked all the Oregon Counties and this is what I found: There are 36 counties in Oregon. Trump won in 25 counties. Which leaves 11 counties where Harris won.

If you look at a picture of a map of the US, it is pretty much all red. Who knew? Starting with the 2000 United States presidential election, the terms “red state” and “blue state” have referred to US states whose voters vote predominantly for one party.

Republican Trump won in 25 Democrat Oregon counties.
Hmmmmmm – YET, When Governor Kotek says she is going to protect us from Trumps policies, (and there are MORE NEW TAXES on the way this legislative session for this ) she is only representing 11 counties !! ) She has become the governor of 11 counties!! Inclusiveness is a word loved by the blue party, I guess that doesn’t INCLUDE Republicans, or independent voters!! I think the 11 counties should be the ones taxed, don’t you? SERIOUSLY

2025: In the latest Morning Consult poll, Kotek is one of only three governors with an approval rating below 50%.
Well, it is self explanatory!

Coastal Futures: A Community Workshop

Coastal Futures: A Community Workshop
We would like to extend our sincere thanks to everyone who joined North Coast Communities for Watershed Protection for this event that focused on Climate Change Resilience for Coastal Communities in Oregon. With over 90 people in attendance (and another 30 participating virtually), there was a great turnout. We want to express our appreciation to Professor Ignacio López Busón and his landscape architecture students from the University of Oregon for their thoughtful and professional presentation. They talked about the challenges posed by coastal erosion, sea level rise, deforestation, and urban development. They also mentioned that around Rockaway Beach there is potential for vacant green space and large lots to be converted into protected conservation areas and private land to be bought by the city that could be used for: walking/running trails, hiking and biking trails, educational signage (wildlife, salmon, drinking water) viewpoints, wildlife corridors, and wetland preserves. The presentation concluded with Q & A and an audience discussion about planning for a more environmentally and socially-resilient future. The feedback we’ve received has been positive. It was a rewarding experience for all involved.

NCCWP wants no more logging and pesticide use in community water sources across all land ownership, and wants an end to pesticide applications near where people live, work and recreate. Safe drinking water and clean air are part of the public trust that we all are entitled to have. Please help North Coast Communities for Watershed Protection safeguard and restore our drinking watersheds. For more info, visit:

The State of Acceptance
“Your soul spontaneously relaxes as it senses the arising of acceptance.

There is release and letting go throughout the body as the experience of inner rejection drops away. Each cell seems to open and breathe with the space to simply be itself.

Your soul feels bathed in a delicate, refreshing liquid that nourishes and welcomes you into a sense of profound relaxation. You feel relieved of an ancient burden of struggle and feel it replaced with an unquestioned sense of belonging.

You belong here and now, exactly where you are, as a part of everything that is. At the same time, you feel fully accepting of what is here; you welcome it without preference or condition.”

Oregon Shores Files Additional Appeal of Rockaway Beach Subdivision Approval

Submitted By: lyndsey.nccwp@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
Update of the Nedonna Wave Planned Unit Development. North Coast Communities for Watershed Protection wants to thank Oregon Shores Conservation Coalition and The Crag Law Center for filing an additional appeal on this PUD to the Land Use Board of Appeals! Included is a picture of one of the lots in the PUD.

Last summer, Oregon Shores filed an appeal of the Rockaway Beach Planning Commission’s approval of a 30 unit-housing development in sensitive wetlands with the Rockaway Beach City Council. After a hearing on the matter where Oregon Shores and a large number of community members turned out to express their concerns with the project, the City Council denied Oregon Shores’ Appeal. Now, Oregon Shores has filed an appeal of that decision with the Oregon Land Use Board of Appeals.

The development, which the developer expects will primarily serve as short-term rentals, poses serious harm to the local environment and public safety. Neighbors and community members are concerned that the development would destroy wildlife habitat, increase flooding and drinking water pollution risks, and make the area less safe in a tsunami.

Before the City Council, Oregon Shores argued that the development would violate state land use laws and Rockaway Beach’s own zoning ordinances. Despite getting approval to develop the land in 2008 and completing the first 8 lots, construction of phase two of the project never began. Now, 16 years later, the developer has added 2 more houses to the plan and wants to get started without seeking re-approval of the development plan under current standards. Rockaway Beach’s zoning ordinances also prohibit residential construction in the special wetland zone in which the development site is located, and require mitigation for development that abuts McMillan Creek, which runs through the property.
Oregon Shores is represented in its appeal by Crag Law Center, a non-profit environmental law center serving Pacific Northwest communities. The Land Use Board of Appeals will likely issue a decision on the appeal in several months.

**NCCWP wants no more logging and pesticide use in community water sources across all land ownership, and wants an end to pesticide applications near where people live, work and recreate. Safe drinking water and clean air are part of the public trust that we all are entitled to have. Please help North Coast Communities for Watershed Protection safeguard and restore our drinking watersheds.

We love bringing our community together in the bookstore! But to make hosting events manageable, we need to pay for a few building improvements (including modifications to the private restroom so it is accessible/usable during events). Proceeds from the auction will go toward the cost of these space improvements.

*Five percent of the proceeds will go to Nehalem Elementary School in the form of store gift cards, to be offered by the school principal to students in need or deserving through achievement.

The generously donated items are geared toward those who love the arts and our community. We will update auction items at www.cloudandleaf.com and social media pages as they come in.

King-size Memory Foam Mattress, Box & Frame

Howdy!
We are downsizing, and I have a really nice king bed for sale. It’s got a Tuft and Needle Mint hybrid memory foam mattress, a non-matching box spring and a metal frame. The mattress is 5 years old – it’s been covered by a waterproof pad (yours free), has no stains or smells. This bed is super comfy – fairly firm, and retains its shape. The side walls are rigid foam, so there’s no sliding off. The mattress is 14″ deep.

These sell new for $2595; an identical one is available on eBay for $1000; this can be yours for $500 OBO.

Look it up at www.tuftandneedle.com/products/hybrid-mattress

I love this bed so much I’m ordering a new smaller one.

I have two thick mattress pads and two newer sets of flannel sheets & pillowcases – make an offer if you like them.

You haul – come get it soon before the weather changes!
