Why Civic Engagement Is Urgent in Today’s America
On January 6, 2021, the world watched as the United States Capitol was stormed by individuals seeking to overturn the results of a democratic election. This event marked a disturbing shift in our political landscape, and recent developments suggest we might be heading toward a repeat of such unrest. The proliferation of misinformation, violence, and unprecedented actions by political leaders and their supporters has created an atmosphere many Americans never imagined possible. (You can still find some of these videos online.)
The North County Resistance firmly rejects violence as a means of political change. Instead, we champion peaceful protest and civic participation as the foundation of a functioning democracy. Our group welcomes all who believe in the principles of democracy. We honor our veterans, uphold honesty, and support due process for all, regardless of race or background. Yet, we observe a troubling erosion of the rule of law and a lack of empathy for working families. The future of social services is uncertain, and many feel betrayed by a government that seems increasingly disconnected from the needs of its citizens.
To better understand the gravity of our situation, it is essential to examine the characteristics of fascism, as outlined by ideologyfinder.com:
Key Characteristics of Fascism and Their Parallels in Today’s America
1. Authoritarian Leadership: Fascist regimes are defined by a single leader who wields absolute power, often presented as the nation’s savior. For example, Donald Trump’s repeated claims of being the only one who can “fix” America and his efforts to undermine electoral processes—such as pressuring state officials to overturn legitimate election results—reflect this authoritarian tendency.
2. Extreme Nationalism: Fascism elevates the nation or race above individuals, fueling aggressive policies and xenophobia. Join us every Saturday from noon to 2 PM—most often in Nehalem, and for larger demonstrations in Manzanita. Let our leaders know that their actions are being watched, and that the American people demand accountability and respect for democratic norms.
The recent release of individuals convicted for their roles in the Capitol riot is a sobering reminder of the ongoing threat to our democracy. Watching these events unfold is both sickening and frightening, but it is also a call to action. Civic-minded Americans must stand together, peacefully and persistently, to safeguard the values that define our nation.

I was thinking about how silly it is for people like us to make a decision for others miles away – people living in a few blocks of downtown Portland as to wether or not they need police or federal law protection. That is really stupid especially as the so called “news” shows only what they want you to believe. And to ad a little more – a warehouse was found in that area that kept the things needed for this group to continue doing what they are doing – costumes, first aid supplies, bottled water, etc. and more tents and camping equipment etc. This is definitely a funded group as is the others in LA, Chicago, and etc. A gun was fired in one of these cities as they were rioting.
I would like to say also that out of that area but still downtown Portland, interviews with shop owners showed them saying that everyday they put up with druggies staggering into their shops or collapsing on the sidewalk and or vandalism. 911 does not answer – they go to a busy signal, or there is a recording. There are plenty of videos taken with smart phones and local journalists that show this is not a definitely not a peaceful protest.

It is also kind of silly to try to analyze one video as there are many, many – taken by many – to be found on the internet showing violence in this area. I haven’t checked recently o see what is happening there.
A question is why our TV cable news – does not show this – or maybe it does – I don’t watch it ,but because many here say there is no rioting -( my hair dresser for one), and no troops are needed.
Another question is why do we here think this is OK- I guess it is denial – you don’t see it – therefore it doesn’t exist…… right
Well I have to say that the young know what is going on. And the future belongs to them – we are leaving them a corrupt planet – and at least in Oregon many of these kids can’t read or do math and don’t know history………….how ill they cope?

Just got back from listening to the North Oregon Coast Symphony in Nehalem.
Wow! Are we lucky! Right here in our own back yard we get to experience the talent of a large group of dedicated musicians. Their music today, under the guidance of conductor Cory Pederson, was uplifting and a joy to hear.
They will be at the Charlene Larsen Center for the Performing Arts tomorrow, Sunday, Nov 16 at 3pm.
DON’T MISS IT!
For only $10, you too, can enjoy this emotional and wonderful musical journey. The sense of their love of music was palpable and joy of experiencing it with my community soothed my soul and heart.

October was breast cancer awareness month, but that’s not the only month we should care for our breasts or learn more.
Do you have a breast care routine? Do you know which breast cancer risk factors you align with? Knowledge is power. Learning yours as well as steps you can take to steer away from them instead of deeper into them is possible and less scary when we talk about it together.
In this workshop, you’ll learn a massage routine that doubles as self-exams and includes focus on lymphatic drainage, acupressure, reflexology, aromatherapy. We’ll discuss foods that balance hormonal health and clear excess ones from our bodies. You’ll explore introductory moves to fascia freedom from Joy Lymph Flow classes that are particularly beneficial to breast health. Plus a near-infrared light experience.

Bless you Dixie, always doing your homework to stay abreast of current events. It’s healthy to keep reading and thinking (and according to Gene’s post, listening to music). I just wish for a wider political variety of sources. Those calling for civil war generally keep arsenals of weaponry and live in remote areas. More recently it seems Stephen Miller has influenced the administration to seek violent confrontations in order to justify militaristic civil response. Protestors have brilliantly turned to fanciful costumes.

Thanks Gene for suggesting music as therapy. I play favorite classical music on a loop all night long and it really helps me. Sticks in my head during the day too 😉
And for the expose on how Trump is informed (not). He of course lives by TV, notoriously so during Jan 6. Lacking education, which he disdains, he learned to shape reality with performance and playing to audience reaction.
I make recurring donations to ProPublica, they do great work, but learned about the misleading Fox News story back when it happened by reading Australia’s ABC website. At the time no US media were reporting it, just focusing on what Trump was saying about Oregon.
Recently there’s been hope the Epstein scandal will bring down Trump. It won’t – haven’t we learned anything? I think the most effective strategy is to expose what’s behind the curtain (a la Wizard of Oz) like ProPublica did. We need much more of that. One problem is media’s reluctance to report speculation…. Then just label it as speculation to avoid legal hassles. It would still better inform the public than all the free airtime they now gift the administration’s deceptions.
Finally, thanks to Patty for the Astorian article. Current federal agency tactics are abhorrent and unnecessary. The cruelty is unamerican, and I think we’d be more effective countering the administration’s narrative by mainstreaming that term – CRUELTY (and GREED) – rather than talking about less relatable terms like authoritarianism. Also, the total lack of any responses to a plethora of media questions is clearly part of the overall strategy. Tech companies, notably Tesla, have long shown it works for entities with less than honorable intentions.
