Sir Francis Drake Association Hosts Annual Nehalem Bay Celebration, June 27–August 2

Submitted By: ggitzen@nehalemtel.net – Click to email about this post
The Sir Francis Drake Association is hosting its annual celebration commemorating Sir Francis Drake’s 1579 anchorage in Nehalem Bay from June 27 through August 2, aimed at bringing Oregon’s true colonial history to light. We started this nonprofit in 2008 to reveal Francis Drake’s true landing site in Oregon, not California,” said Garry Gitzen, president of the Association. “Our annual celebration and the banner highlight evidence from Jensen, Costaggini and our own research to set the historical record straight.”
Gitzen says: “He writes history so others can experience it” His book—Francis Drake in Nehalem Bay 1579, Setting the Historical Record Straight (2011) plays a leading role in the Oregon-based theory which has received strong praise from both local and international historians. A review in the Oregon Archaeological Society Newsletter called it “a magnificent compilation which should be in every important historical library”, noting its thorough research, compelling organization, and rare primary sources.
The Drake anchorage is highlighted by the 12 feet by 8 feet banner describing the survey Drake made in 1579 on Neahkahnie Mountain. It’s divided into 3 stages; anthropologist Wayne Jensen and Tillamook museum director, first theorized in 1971 that Francis Drake had made a survey on the iconic mountain marking the ‘so-called treasure rocks’; in 1982 Oregon State University Civil Engineering master’s candidate, Phil Costaggini, decided to do his thesis on the survey rocks; and finally in 2014 Gitzen uncovered a map drawn in 1599 drawn by the Queen’s cartographer Edward Wright. This is the only map to ever carry the Queen’s Privy seal during her reign.
Everyone is invited to drive by and view the informative banner of Oregon’s true history but please do not disturb the residents at 125 N. 1st St. in Wheeler.
Founded in 2008 as a nonprofit, the Association promotes rigorous, evidence-based history about Francis Drake’s 1579 voyage. Its flagship project includes Garry Gitzen’s book and annual community events in Nehalem Bay.

Free 14 inch Corded Lawn Mower

Submitted By: jill@nehalemtel.net – Click to email about this post
Earthwise model 50214 mulching lawnmower. Electric mower you plug in to an extension cord.
Purchased July 2012. Never sharpened—will benefit from sharpening or replacing the blade. Weighs 36 pounds. Works fine—I cut our 1/4 acre lawn with it just before upgrading. Note duct tape on the handle padding. The motor sometimes whines a bit. The “side discharge deflector” is included, but the plastic is cracked and it doesn’t stay on. I mow without it, the clippings stay on the lawn either way (there is no bag for grass clippings on this model.)
Pickup in Wheeler.

Millie Is Looking For A Loving Home!

Submitted By: ketzel.levine@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
After years in Texas and a very hard-luck life, Millie, a.k.a. Mildred Elizabeth Benson, has landed in clover, a.k.a., Nehalem.

This sweet, friendly, calm, and affectionate creature is an arrestingly pretty 58 lb Catahoula mix from Texas. Despite a lifetime of abuse and neglect, 9 yr old Millie wakes up every morning happy, healthy, full of love and ready for action.

Millie can’t stop smiling when she’s outside. She adores other dogs, chasing balls, jumping in the river, and patrolling the property for chipmunks, squirrels and other intruders. She has excellent recall whether on the beach or in the mountains and keeps up with far younger dogs (her bff is a young Golden) despite a funky front paw.

Some things scare Millie, likely a reminder of darker times. When that happens, she responds well to quieting and redirecting, unless there’s fireworks at which point she disappears under the nearest bed. Though big and strong, she strives to be a lap dog and often succeeds.

Millie is ready to settle in for life with the right people and animals. Might that be with you? If so, please tell us a bit about both yourself and your life with dogs and we’ll run it past her. If it passes the sniff test, we’ll arrange a visit.

On behalf of Miss Millie and all lost-and-found souls, thank you.
