Stolen- great sentimental value

Submitted By: jocooper8183@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
A small teal backpack and tan and black Columbia rain jacket were stolen off the Alder Creek trail Monday, April 21. These belong to a 71 year old man who was working along the trail trying to eradicate Scotch Broom for the good of the environment. The backpack has small key chains and zipper pulls that were accumulated on his travels, they are irreplaceable. His phone was also in there, with photos of his brother-in-law who passed away in January. We would love it if we could have at least some of the items back- leave at our driveway at 11440 Fern Way, or call us at 503-368-6249.

The countdown continues!

Hoffman Wonder Garden Plant Sale
SAT, APR 26th
10-12pm
Inside the Hoffman Center for the Arts

As we continue the roll call of eye candy available at Saturday’s plant sale (scroll down for links to our previous posts), today’s specials are Clarkia ssp. lindleyi (farewell to spring) and Gilia capitata (blue thimble flower). To know them is to want them, particularly if you want them back every year.

The clarkia selection we’re offering is definitely our showiest and longest-blooming native annual. Likely you’ve seen them swaying in the breeze along Laneda Ave in our manzanita bed.

The plant’s iridescent pink cups start opening in late May and come and go for at least two months. They appear delicate but that’s just a ruse; these wildflowers are tough and tenacious, setting lots of seed that bloom the next year. Our crop is planted in gravel, where set seeds can slumber undisturbed.

If blue’s your color, you must plant gilia. It goes by many common names but you need only remember “blue wildflower” when you come to the sale.

The picture below tells you why you want to have it (indeed, lots of it) but you might also like to know that if you spoil it just a bit, say in good garden soil with some watering, the flowers may well be bigger and bluer than those in the deliberately dry WG gravel bed.

FYI wildflower fans, we’ll also be selling ‘Pretty in Pink’ CA poppies and party yellow Madia elegans which, left to seed a year, will look much like a field of miniature sunflowers among the other wild beauties in your garden.

The Lemming Syndrome

Submitted By: genedieken@yahoo.com – Click to email about this post
Back in January, Dixie Darrow requested that we all be patient and give Elon Musk and the DOGE boys 90 days to work their magic and then we’d see major accomplishments. So it’s telling that as we’ve reached the end of that period she’s back, not to celebrate the DOGE magic but to insult her fellow citizens, calling them Lemmings for being outraged by any of a hundred horrors begun in this period.

It’s disappointing that the two most consistent contrarian voices on this platform both seem to have contracted Rickles Syndrome: make your point by insulting your audience.

THE LEMMING SYNDROME

Submitted By: dixiedarrow@icloud.com – Click to email about this post
THE LEMMING SYNDROME -This refers to a phenomenon wherein crowds of people, across various fields of life, exhibit a certain kind of behaviour for no reason other than the fact that a majority of their peers do so. Many psychologists even argue that human beings are conditioned by nature to follow the larger group instead of undertaking the risk of independent thought and action.

YES INDEED! As I was watching the throngs of protestors marching to protest what they don’t understand, I was reminded of lemmings running towards and tumbling over a cliff in a mad scramble…..(there are views on you tube! ). – YEP these crowds reminded me of lemmings!

Thats the Democrats and others I guess -Instead of trying to figure out what is happening, what is next, and /or what went wrong – Its over the cliff for them…….

I did recently ask a Democratic group what they believed in and for a long time got no reply but finally someone did and they questioned my question because they did not have an answer to it! I mentioned to them that Democrats, according to CNN which is lefty news that the Democrats today only have a 29% voter approval rate! Didn’t you know? I asked. If I were a Democrat I would be working on the problem …. But I think they want to blame others – (I am the problem?) not sure! I am an Independent voter.

Anyway the problem is that many things are changing and it is scary, and people don’t like change. Also these persons have very little understanding of their government, or history, or math and they tend to be lead by others with fake and questionable motives who tell familiar story lines that these people find compelling and attractive. They use the word Democracy a lot – And I am quite positive by this time that these protesting persons do not know what Democracy means.

The US government is spending over $1 trillion annually on interest payments on the national debt, The interest on the national debt is 93.8 billion per month according to A I!!
Who is going to pay that? Thats just the interest. Our debt is bigger than our GDP.
And that is what made me realize that we are in deep doo doo. HENCE DOGE – ok?

It is just like a household where all of a sudden it comes to light – that the party that handles the finances has secretly re-mortgaged the house several times over to pay off charged debt and now there is no equity left in the home they have lived-in for 20 years! That happened to 2 friends of mine! Using a charge card without restraint is an addiction I believe, and it left a friend of mine on the verge of retirement with no home equity. Retired with only social security – is a bad place to be. And that is the USA Today – we have massive debt. Our GDP cannot handle our debt and pay bills at the same time, and it appears that the two biggest unfunded programs we have are social security and and medicaid !!!! We can’t just keep printing money – that leads to massive inflation. And our dollar becomes worthless! Under Biden the inflation rate went to 5.2 according to the GAO – the Government Accounting Office.

In closing, although there is much more to say – What is happening today is an attempt to keep America from defaulting on its debt – a mad scramble to find all that is considered fraud, waste and abuse, so to bring back financial health to our economy. President Trump has signed several contracts with chip makers and automobile mfgrs to create more jobs here. Tariffs, which I was taught in school, were meant to protect the American worker, and the middle class, which was mostly destroyed by NAFTA.
Bringing more jobs into our country will stabilize this countries economy. That is what we want and need!

Put on a lemming mask and protest if you want to, but your energy would be better spent in trying to solve some of the many massive problems in our country and here at home in Oregon.

WONDER GARDEN PLANT SALE: PLANT PREVIEW #2!

Submitted By: ketzel.levine@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
The countdown continues till the Hoffman Wonder Garden’s Plant Sale:

SAT, APR 26th
10-12pm
Inside the Hoffman Center for the Arts

Yesterday, we profiled the horned poppy, which we’ll offer in two delicious colors. Here’s the link if you missed that post ‘cause you do not want to miss out on this plant:
www.northcoastbbq.com/2025/04/19/wonder-garden-plant-sale-the-plant-previews-begin/

Today we’ve got the inside line on a manzanita we’ve never been able to offer before, easily the most unusual manzi selection we grow: Arctostaphylos ‘Diablo’s Blush’.

People often mistake this slow-growing work of art is as a sedum. No lie. I mean, if you know your plants, you’ll know that confusing a manzi and a sedum is TOTALLY NUTS.

And yet, it’s an easy mistake to make! The foliage on this diminutive beauty looks absolutely succulent.
Its new growth is quite blue and its leaves are stacked in an upright manner that defies the rules of any manzi foliage you’ve ever seen. And after at least 5 years in the Wonder Garden (it lives near the big Hollywood Juniper along Laneda), it’s barely 18” tall. A rock garden specimen of a manzanita!

In full sun, mulched in gravel and no water after it’s established, Arctostaphylos ‘Diablo’s Blush’ is a heart throb. We’re smitten.

See you at the WG Plant Sale!
