Brooks says politicians use dark passions to motivate voters. He delves into dark passions and how they take hold. He laments the loss of morality and sees an era of mass ignorance as we are fed an endless stream of entertainment he calls spiritual nutrients. I would call it something else. Most people I encounter don’t seem to have a lack of morality or intelligence. The flood of entertainment vying for our attention on the other hand… but then it’s just entertainment, we can choose to turn it off. Spirituality and intelligence come from somewhere else.
In the conclusion of David Brooks’ column there are 3 paragraphs that, for me, summed it all up:
“So to return to my original question: Why does politics feel so different now than in times past? My short answer is that over these years, demagogues in politics, in the media and online have exploited common feelings of humiliation to arouse dark passions, and those dark passions are dehumanizing our culture and undermining liberal democracy.”
Brooks defines humiliation as a result of being denied expected rights. He goes on to say people humiliated can lash out. Trump certainly exploited that at his rallies. Bernie Sanders too, but doesn’t get as much traction with his promotion of free everything. As an aside, Brooks wonders if history would have been different had Obama not humiliated Trump at the correspondent’s dinner on 30 Apr, 2011. Brooks conveniently omits Trump’s frequent attacks on Obama’s birth, religion, and election legitimacy prior to that dinner.
Brooks continues, “I often hear Democrats say their party needs to fight harder. These are people who don’t really believe in democracy. Fighting is for fascists. Democracy is about persuasion. Democrats would do well to get out of their urban and academic bubbles and understand the people they need to persuade and then persuade harder.”
At his many rallies, Trump (seeking adoration) refined his messaging for the base, building on what he previously learned from right wing media. The people think he really cares about them. It translated to tremendous voter support. Many only vote when Trump is on the ballot. Liberals feel ignored, as Brooks implies. Voters are quietly changing affiliation to Independent, while Bernie Sanders is the one connecting with the electorate. So the Democratic Party needs to figure it out, not just find a charismatic leader – I think we need more politicians who speak clearly and can explain complex matters. Their electorate must begin to feel like the party is really paying attention to average folks who are not the proverbial squeaky wheels or special interests.
I think the real nugget in Brooks’ column is this: “I’d add only that in order to repress dark passions and arouse the good ones, leaders need to create conditions in which people can experience social mobility. As philosophers have long understood, the antidote to fear is not courage; it’s hope. If people feel their lives and their society are stagnant, they will fight like scorpions in a jar. But if they feel that they personally are progressing toward something better, that their society is progressing toward something better, they will have an expanded sense of agency, their motivations will be oriented toward seizing some wonderful opportunity, and those are nice motivations to have.”
Persistent wealth disparity, and now unregulated big tech, have for too long trampled rights while duping us with counterfeit hope. Yet, adding to our frustration, nobody seems to know what to do about it. Those with money and power think they can soon get by without us by automating everything. What are they smoking?
Just the other day I found an idea in another article. Maybe it’s simplistic but in my experience uplifting and powerful. With some exceptions of course, those controlling our country and society are acting in bad faith and exhibiting very poor character. Rather than responding in kind or taking the bait, we can change what we consume, and modify how we behave to act with good character. By noticing and commending better character in others the movement can spread.
ICE protests in Portland are a good example. It’s brilliant to wear non-threatening costumes and deny the administration any sort of war zone appearance, which they so desperately need to support their bad faith narrative. Opportunities to apply this kind of strategy are in everything we do. We just need to be kind and considerate. We don’t have to participate in or contribute to whatever is harmful. From the bottom up, we can model a better way. Many do already, and those who’ve been angered by dark passions and dreadful news can try exercising their good character. Benefits will begin immediately.
This is not any revelation. It’s something we’ve been taught all along in many different ways. “Helping others is what makes us happy” (from the movie Last Christmas).

As many of you already know we use these Protests to collect food for our North County Food Bank located in Wheeler. If you can please bring canned or non-perishable food to this event. We will deliver food, cash, or checks to the Food Bank when they are open on Tuesday. Please put your food in your car right now so you don’t forget it.
Our Protest is peaceful, and we want to keep it that way. If you have someone harassing you or bothering you in any way, take your friends and slowly move away from them. Find someone with a bright yellow vest on and explain what is happening. Do not respond to negative remarks or threats. Put some space between you and the problem. Do not try to touch angry people. Please follow the directions of the organizers-people in the yellow vests.
Because we are along Highway 101 we ask you to stay behind the barriers with caution tape on them. We ask you to not park in any of the business parking lots. You can park in the parking lot of the Manzanita City Hall. You can park along Manzanita and Laneda Avenues. Again, not in the business parking lots. If you need a ride from the Manzanita City Hall parking lot, call 503-801-3534 when you arrive and someone will pick you up shortly. We need to keep the corner of where Manzanita Avenue and Hwy. 101 empty so that people driving cars can see around the corners. If you park in this area, you will be asked to move for safety reasons.

Maggie is a very outgoing kitty who adores having her silken fur stroked over and over. She gets absolutely wild when she is in play mode, and loves to chase the wand toys. Once finished hunting she would love to curl up with her person for a little catnap.
Maggie loves to play; batting balls, climbing towers and chasing string toys are all activities she loves. When she is not playing or snuggled on an available lap, you will find Maggie cozied up on padded chair or blanket. Maggie would be an excellent companion animal for someone who loves to cuddle and play, and then cuddle some more.
MAGGIE WOULD BE IDEALLY SUITED TO AN ONLY CAT HOME. She has a dominant, somewhat bossy demeanor and the only cats she will tolerate without frequent altercations are very submissive, easy going, “ok lady, you’re the boss, I’ll get out of your way” types. A very slow, cautious intro period would also be needed.

I get information daily now about the No Kings Day coming up this Saturday around the nation and here in Manzanita. Location is on Highway 101 at the top of Laneda and Manzanita Avenues. Time is from noon to 2 PM. The last information I received from the No Kings Team said this: ” Let’s do everything in our power to make No Kings Day the biggest, peaceful day of action possible.” So, are you with us? What an excellent PROTEST we had today in Nehalem—even the rain couldn’t dampen our spirits! About 30 people joined us, and hundreds more showed their support by honking and giving us the thumbs up. Many agreed that this was the most enthusiastic response we’ve received in weeks. Over the past few months, we’ve held more than 16 PROTESTS, and while we wish we could be out every day, it’s not always possible. There are so many positive events happening in North Tillamook County, and we are truly fortunate to live in such a vibrant, supportive community where freedom of speech is celebrated.
Looking ahead, we need to get serious about next week’s PROTEST in Manzanita. Your support is crucial—here’s how you can help: bring a friend, make a sign, donate snacks like banana bread or pumpkin bread for our protesters, or simply spread the word to encourage others to join us. We especially hope to see more teenagers participate; we haven’t seen any at our PROTEST since July 4th in Manzanita. Even if you can’t stay, drive by a couple of times and honk to show your support. Every action makes a difference!
Rain is likely next Saturday, but this week proved that a little weather won’t hold us back. To keep everyone safe at the Manzanita PROTEST, we’ll share important instructions in the next few days—please read them carefully and follow them. These guidelines are for everyone’s safety. This is pretty true of the dominate political parties in our country. YES! Really it is – and that is good! Remember Opposite but Complimentary is the key!!!
I have to say that as a democrat, my late husband was a republican and my good friend who lived across the way was also a republican, and it didn’t seem to matter. We differed on several things, greatly on the matter of abortion, I was and am pro choice and she was pro- life. YET – we still got along! We just agreed to disagree and then enjoyed each others company, Do you remember those days?

SO who or what is dividing us, how do they turn us against each other? Basically it is the media. People my age, maybe 60 plus usually watch the corporate news. The left and the right media usually over exagerate the positives on their side of the aisle and just don’t mention the negatives, which make us all believe that the other side is totally crazy. How can you believe that? They say to me. I could ask them the same question!
There is much going on that is not addressed in the mainstream media. Most people don’t care enough to go deeper into who or what is happening, or even why? I think these people are the ones who get mad at the Dixie who runs the wine shop. (Again – that Dixie is not posting on the BBQ.)
Their are many people who want to know the what, why, where, and who. We usually go to the internet and listen and watch others who have opinions that we are interested in hearing.
So naturally these people are more informed than the others. Sometimes they feel that what they know should be shared because the information involves all Americans and we feel that everyone should know because it involves safety, it might effect our freedoms, and our way of life. If you don’t want to read or hear about these things, then you have the right and ability to tune out, and you can, You don’t have to read what I write – so don’t read it. But to threaten a local wine shop because this very nice lady has the same name as me is a little ridiculous don’t you think? And you know what? If she goes out of business YOU are

Republicans and Democrats – fundamentally opposite – but complimentary
( we help each other come to sensible conclusions)
In August 2024, the City Manager issued a Request For Proposals allowing engineering firms to provide proposals for professional engineering services and construction administration. The request included the unusual requirement that “all proposers must have been in business as their current entity for at least five years”. This effectively eliminated North Coast Civil Design, a local firm with 25 years of experience including the design, overview, and construction administration services for the Dorcus Lane Reconstruction Project. North Coast Civil Design was viewed to be in existence in their “current entity” as a business for 3 years thus effectively preventing them from even submitting a proposal for consideration.
City officials retain Windsor Engineers from Portland, pay them $424,000 for presenting a project to the community for 2,000 feet of road widening, a new 10 ft. wide paved pedestrian path, over 3,000 ft. of new water main, over 1,000 linear feet of retaining wall for the extreme slope along the west side of Classic Street, and stormwater improvements. Unfortunately, key provisions of that design will not now be built and Windsor Engineers was removed from the project with no public explanation. City officials now decide to select North Coast Civil Design to salvage a project that squandered both time and money. No explanation given as to why the 5 year prohibition preventing a submittal a year ago was no longer relevant.
Classic Street is defined as a Minor Collector street due to the volume and type of traffic it carries and as such is required by City Ordinance to have minimum eleven foot travel lanes. City officials plan to ignore their own Ordinance requirements and maintain the existing 10 foot travel lanes for a considerable portion of the project. The 2 foot wide landscape buffer that was designed to separate vehicle traffic from pedestrians has been eliminated thus maintaining the existing unsafe conditions for bikers and pedestrians. Despite the fact that Councilors take an oath to uphold City Ordinances, when that oath becomes inconvenient, they simply ignore it and hope no one notices.
Perhaps the most important element of the project identified by Windsor Engineering was the need for a retaining wall or other suitable engineering measures along the steep slope that forms the west boundary of Classic Street. The Windsor consultants noted the pavement condition along the west side of Classic Street and confirmed that the underlying base is moving or otherwise failing. There will be no retaining wall built to arrest this movement which will only be exacerbated by the increasing levels of traffic on Classic Street in the years to come. The exact condition of the existing road base is also unknown. Old timers recall when the original road base was put in with substandard materials including old tires and the City then failed to overlay the road base with sufficient asphalt.
The City continues to pay legal fees and awaits a verdict out of Tillamook Circuit Court resulting from a prospective bidder who alleges the City engaged in an improper bid process. The City Manager claims that visitors pay for most of our infrastructure improvements yet not a single dollar of Transient Lodging Tax money from those visitors has been budgeted for this project to assist funding the construction as recommended by the Windsor consultants to create a long term stable roadway with sufficient width to provide safe conditions for pedestrians and bikers.
No announcement from the City as to when the new design which bears little resemblance to the one presented last year, will be presented to the public at a meeting for review and questions. Also, a firm cost for the above described project remains unknown and likely will need to be increased if some of the unknowns need to be corrected. After all, what could possibly go wrong?

Let’s Talk Tillamook: Understanding the Future of the Oregon Health Plan

Q: What is Medicaid, and how does it work in Oregon?
A: Medicaid is a joint federal and state program that helps cover medical costs for
people with limited income. In Oregon, it’s called the Oregon Health Plan (OHP).
OHP serves children, pregnant women, people with disabilities, and elderly adults.
Currently, the federal government pays about 76% of the cost, and Oregon pays
about 24%.
Q: How does Medicaid differ from Medicare?
A: Medicare is a federal health insurance program for people age 65 and older, as
well as some younger people with disabilities. Unlike OHP, Medicare has the same
rules across all states and typically requires participants to pay premiums,
deductibles, and coinsurance. Medicare generally does not cover long-term nursing
home care. That gap is filled by OHP, which pays for services for about 60% of
nursing home residents in Oregon.
Q: How many people rely on OHP in Oregon and here in Tillamook?
A: Across the state, 59% of children and 34% of adults are covered. Nearly half
of all births in Oregon are paid for through OHP. Here in Tillamook County, about
8,000–8,500 people—roughly one-third of the population—are enrolled.
Q: Who qualifies for OHP?
A: Eligibility depends on income, family size, and health status. For example, a
family of four with an annual income below about $43,000 may qualify. OHP is
designed to help people who might not otherwise afford health insurance.
Q: What changes are coming to OHP?
A: Beginning January 2027, Oregon will receive less federal Medicaid funding.
That means fewer services and fewer people eligible for OHP. Rural areas like
Tillamook are expected to feel the cuts hardest. Without insurance, people often
delay care until it becomes urgent, leading to worse outcomes and much higher
costs. For example, an urgent care visit might cost $150–$250, while an ER visit
for the same condition could be $1,500–$3,000. If small hospitals can’t keep up,
some may close.
Eric Swanson, president of Adventist Health Tillamook, notes that 35% of the
hospital’s patients rely on OHP. He warns that cuts will be “devastating to
people on Medicaid.”
Q: What about the new work requirement?
A: Also in 2027, most OHP members ages 19–64 will have to document at least 80
hours of work per month (or prove exemption) to keep coverage. While 71% of
OHP members already work, many who don’t are elderly or disabled. The online
reporting system may create barriers, especially for rural residents with limited
internet access.
Q: What can people do now?
A: If you think you may qualify for OHP, it’s best to apply before December 2026,
when enrollment will likely become more complicated. Visit the Oregon Health
Plan website or contact the Tillamook County Community Health Center for help
applying.
Dear Protesters,
It’s been a busy week here. Just wanted to touch bases and let you know the Protest for this week will be in Nehalem from noon to 2 PM. We’ve been pretty lucky with the weather, but right now I am seeing some rain for Saturday-not much, but some. Please bring your rain gear, your waterproof signs, or forget the signs and just bring yourselves. The few critics we have are hoping we shrivel up when we get wet. We want to collect your thoughts on what people might do if they can’t protest in the rain.
A few thoughts have already been presented, the first one being a letter/postcard campaign. Writing to both Republicans and Democrats to express how we feel. Another is to turn our thoughts and energy into helping those in our community who have been adversely affected by our Federal Government. Neither thought is exclusive of the other. Between our North County Food Bank, our Nehalem Bay Community Services, and the need for food for kids when they are on vacation during the Thanksgiving and Christmas Holidays. Please add your own thoughts to these and let us know what you are thinking on Saturday.
We are looking for more donations in our donation box for the North County Food Bank or cash/check donations to this organization. Again, we thank the couple from Tillamook who bring a minimum of 5 cases of food plus a large bag of dog or cat food each Saturday.

I absolutely reject Drumf’s current deployment of any National Guard to Portland.
I also absolutely reject “Encyclopedia Brittanica” cozy little explanation bout J6. In the view of many, including myself, the Biden admin did in fact steal the election. And there were fed instigators like Ray Epps all over the place. Many innocent folks were given draconian sentences by Dick Cheney’s daughter, in my view.
Anyway, I think Drumf a dangerous moron, might have some stuff planned to escalate the current situation in Portland, and I would encourage protesters to do something else for a couple weeks.

The most iconic photo portraying hatred that I know of, is the picture that appeared in LIFE MAGAZINE, which is no longer in publication. This was a picture of southern white citizens spitting on little black children who were integrating (for the first time ever in the south) a white school back in the 60’s…….
The little 6,7 year old children were dressed in their very best little ruffly dresses, shiny black patent shoes, each holding the hand of a white policeman. The faces of the angry white adults being held back by a rope and other policemen were screwed up, screwed up!, with hate and they were spitting on the little children as they walked past. The image of their faces has stayed in my mind forever. I can’t find this picture on the Internet. Can you imagine spitting on little children?

He is using you. Go protest somewhere else for two weeks, come back to the ICE facility after that, if that location is important to you. I believe in a closed border, and in my view deportations need to happen. That said, deportations are not happening in a functional, compassionate manner. I absolutely 100% believe in a CLOSED BORDER with legal immigration. I LOVE living in America, the melting pot, with folks from all over the world living here. This is a COUNTRY, part of that means we have a BORDER, and folks need to come here LEGALLY, RESPECTFULLY. Change the legal immigration system if need be.
I completely disagree with all of you that tore down the George Washington statue on Sandy Blvd, at the German American Society. I lived nearby at the time, and I really, really wanted to roll down there with my Benelli, to be honest. I made the smart choice and stayed home. You’re welcome.
The tear-down of that statue was NOT a protest, it was idiot-insurrection. The lot of ya should have been thrown in jail.
