Loneliness and Aging: Making Space for Our Elders
with Pamela Slaughter
Loneliness and isolation are common experiences for older people, especially for those
who do not have nearby family members or who are not computer literate.
What do you know about the elders in your life or in your neighborhood?
Are they connected to their families in an enriching way?
Do they belong to a caring community of some kind?
What can you do, or are you currently doing to avoid isolation and loneliness?
Facilitator Pamela Slaughter is a lifelong Oregonian with varied interests. She retired from her career as an adult protective service investigator for Multnomah County, where she saw firsthand how devastating loneliness and isolation can be. Pamela is the founder and executive director of People of Color Outdoors, a nonprofit designed to help facilitate the reconnection of Black, Indigenous,
and People of Color to the outdoors.

She is the author of the children’s book Hi! My Name is Robin!, published in 2020, which she hopes will encourage families to bird watch together.
The goal of the Conscious Aging and Community Connections Program is to bring people together, to get to know one another at a deeper level and to encourage one another to live our best possible lives. The Conscious Aging and Community Connections Program is held on the second Monday of each month from 2 to 4 PM.
This conversation is for older adults and people who live near elders or have older
adults in their lives. We’ll explore questions, experiences, and obstacles to showing up
for elderly people and to generate ideas for connection.

This program is sponsored by Pine Grove Community House which allows us to keep admission at $5 per session. All money received goes directly to Pine Grove.

An artist talk and info session on the value of legacy projects in end-of-life care with co-founder Carolina Starrett.

Carolina Starrett, co-founder of the North Coast EOL Collective, explores the intricate structures of families, both physical and psychological, in her work. Originally from Southern California, Carolina contemplates the resilience inherent in each family iteration, considering how stories and language are embedded in the body and transmitted across generations.

With a dual focus on her roles as a doula and artist, Carolina employs materials and processes as tools for celebration and inquiry into how we collect, retain, and honor memories. Her artistic journey delves into the interplay between stories of family, community, and connection, inviting audiences to reflect on the profound capacity of objects to sustain and perpetuate relationships.

Carolina’s work serves as a meditation on the body as a vessel of love and memory, inviting viewers to contemplate the enduring significance of these intertwined elements in the fabric of human experience.

Herbal Workshop & Spa- Learn to Make Salve and Tinctures!

Submitted By: revolutionginger@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
Hi there BBQ Land!

Just wanted to let you know there’s gonna be a super cool herbal class here at North Fork 53 in a few weeks.

I’ve been wanting to do more hands on workshops for a while now but the tea company kept me too busy to really get it going.

So this spring I asked my friend Julie at Laughing Rabbit Farm up near Astoria if she wanted to come down and share some of her herbal salve and tincture making skills.

Lucky for you, I’ve got a big jar of red poplar bud oil that’s been soaking in my pantry since last year.

So Julies gonna show us how to make the ultimate herbal first aid skin balm (aka the Balm of Gilead).

It’s a beeswax salve that smells delicious- like vanilla amber, and heals sunburn, bug bites, scrapes-even arthritis pain.

She’s also bringing my all time favorite spring herb- nettles!

If you have allergies, anemia or your body just needs a deep green boost after a long winter- nettles are the best.

She’ll show us how to create a nettle tincture from fresh and dried nettles and even how to make nettle pesto.

After the workshop, if you want to really treat your self- you can add on an herbal wood fired sauna and cold plunge where you’ll get a chance to play with a selection of Julie’s herbal skin oils and a clay mask for a nice spring body detox.

If you’ve been wanting learn about herbs but don’t know where to start- this is your chance! Getting hands on with plant medicine is the best way to learn how to make your own.

In just a few hours you’ll learn to make the Balm of Gilead and a Nettle Tincture- plus you’ll get lots of recipes to keep on playing with at home.

Only 12 spots are open so grab yours before they’re gone.

Save The Date: The Green Reaper April 27, 2:00-4:00 NCRD

Submitted By: garys@nehalemtel.net – Click to email about this post
Dear Conscious Aging & Community Connections Friends,
At our inaugural meeting last October, the # 1 topic you requested was Green Burial. The team heard you, and so we are presenting an expert on the topic. Join us with your questions, concerns, and experiences.

The Green Reaper to Appear in Nehalem!
Everything you want to know about green burial

Elizabeth Fournier, aka The Green Reaper, will speak at the North Coast Recreation District (NCRD), 36155 9th Street, Nehalem. The presentation will be held in the Gallery Saturday, April 27 from 2:00-4:00; $10 cash at the door.

Every year conventional funerals bury millions of tons of wood, concrete, and metals, as well as millions of gallons of carcinogenic embalming fluid. There is a more environmentally conscious and affordable way, and Elizabeth Fournier, affectionately dubbed the “Green Reaper,” walks you through it. She provides comprehensive and compassionate guidance, covering everything from green burial planning and home funeral basics to legal guidelines and outside-the-box options, such as burials at sea. Fournier points the way to green burial practices that consider both the environmental well-being of the planet and the economic well-being of loved ones.

Elizabeth is the author of The Green Burial Guidebook: Everything You Need to Plan an Affordable, Environmentally Friendly Burial. She is a member of the Advisory Board for the Green Burial Council, and the owner and operator of Cornerstone Funeral Services in Boring, Oregon.

Elizabeth will have copies of her books available for purchase.

This trio performs in a ‘songwriters-in-the-round’ style, taking turns presenting a variety of R&B, jazz and rock influenced covers and original music — seasonal selections, too — that showcases their musicianship, unique vocals and rich harmonies. This will be their first appearance at NCRD!

RISING FROM THE TRASHES
25 YEARS OF TRASHY FUN – TRASH BASH IS SOON
WHERE? White Clover Grange #784, Nehalem, Oregon
WHEN? Thursday, May 16 to Sunday, May 19, 2024
SUBMIT INTEREST BY: May 1st
www.heartofcartm.org

From Thursday, May 16 to Sunday, May 19, 2024, we will gather in Nehalem, OR, at the White Clover Grange for an unforgettable extravaganza of the senses as the Trash Bash celebrates its 25th anniversary with a Trash, Boom, BANG!
Under the banner of “Rising from the Trashes” storytellers, visual artists, community activists, musicians, and runway trashion models will show off their creativity and passion for the natural beauty that surrounds us and the environment we’re passionate about preserving by turning trash into art! Should you be there? Absolutely!
Each artist puts their own unique spin on the experience and “you walk away with a sense of common purpose with a community of people” says Jennifer Nightingale, an Astoria-based novelist and storyteller who has returned to the Trash Bash to tell trash-inspired tales again and again. “When I come to the Trash Bash, I feel understood . . . I’ve never participated in any group where I felt so instantly welcomed.”
What do all of the participants have in common? “They take great delight in our natural world and,” as Nightingale stresses, “if you don’t fight for it, it won’t be here. The interesting thing about the trash bash is,” she goes on, “that there are moments of humor, pathos . . . the experience really runs the gamut of emotions—but in the end, it’s fun. The feeling that runs throughout is JOY.”
A writer and storyteller from Astoria, OR, Nightingale and her husband adopted a stretch of river beach eight years ago that they clean up several days a week. This experience and the trash she has collected by doing so over the years inspired her most recent Trash Bash tale. But participation is not limited to storytellers alone! Visual artists, fashion models, musicians, passionate volunteers, and community activists are all encouraged to get involved: “Just bring whatever gifts you have.”
“By participating,” Nightingale reflects, “it changes your response to trash. It heightens your empathy, your careful skills of observation. It helps you value trash and see all of its potential. It helps you walk away with a new perspective: Can you find the story inside the trash? Can it be repurposed somehow? Each item of trash tells a story. You’ll learn to see in new ways, beyond the item’s initial purpose.”
Why should you participate? Nightingale doesn’t hesitate, “It’s very meaningful. No matter what [which art form] you do, you’re telling a story. We all have to step up and do a little piece.” Maybe best of all, by participating and submitting your work of art/story/trashion, it’s a way to love the Coast back: “I love it here,” Nightingale gushes. “I love the power of the Coast. The rivers and estuaries. To be with a community of people who care for the well-being of this community is just AWESOME!”
If that’s you too, we would love to see your trash craft or hear your trashy story!
