OFRENDA A NUESTRO OCEANO SANADOR (AN OFFERING TO OUR HEALING OCEAN) A HUEHCA OMEYOCAN CELEBRATION

Submitted By: vicky@netartsbaywebs.org – Click to email about this post
Join Friends of Netarts Bay, Watershed, Estuary, Beach and Sea (WEBS) and celebrate Huehca Omeyocan’s ninth year at Cape Lookout State Park on August 3rd!

Huehca Omeyocan will be sharing art, culture, music, and dance in a vibrant, colorful, generous, and transcendental way to strengthen the connection with nature and bring communities together during this inspiring celebration . Huehca Omeyocan will be joined by Friends of Netarts Bay WEBS, Oregon State Parks, OSU Extension, the Juntos Afuera Program, and Oregon Shores for an inspiring day with opportunities to explore, learn, celebrate, and act for the ocean.

Huehca Omeyocan was founded in McMinnville Oregon in 2016 by artist, drummer, performer, and cultural promoter Eduardo Cruz Torres Amictlan and his wife and main dancer of the group Maria Elena Cortes Duran Malinalmiquiz. Maria started dancing when she was only 12 years old, and it has been a part of her life ever since.

The Mexica-Chichimeca or Aztec dance and music connect the natural world, human body, and spirit with everything that exists. It is a cosmic integration — a prayer in motion that delights the senses. Led by Maria Elena Cortes Duran, dancers’ regalia vibrantly display colorful ancestral symbols and vivid feathers. At the Huehuetl drum, Eduardo Cruz Torres sets the rhythm for the flight of ceramic flutes, ocarinas, and wind whistles, while traditional Nahuatl rattles, stones, seeds, and bones stir the atmosphere of each performance.
The movements and sounds of these spirited presentations mirror the energy that joins each of us with each other and the entire cosmos. With joyful generosity, Huehca Omeyocan aims to inspire this transcendent connectivity in every community they touch.

Enjoy the ceremony and various other educational and service activities on August 3rd. starting at 11:00 a.m. This is a full day event and often stretches beyond the advertised end time for the celebration. Bring a chair, a picnic, and enjoy the day at the coast!

Netarts Bay Salt Marsh Tour

Submitted By: vicky@netartsbaywebs.org – Click to email about this post
Join Friends of Netarts Bay – Watershed, Estuary, Beach, and Sea (WEBS) on August 5th for a FREE event including a presentation and guided tour along the salt marsh at the southern end of Netarts Bay.

While exploring in this unique habitat, participants can learn about the plants and animals, and the importance of this environment from the forest to the water’s edge. Discover how plants survive in a salty world and explore vegetation succession from the bay to the dunes.
This program includes two parts: Starting with an indoor presentation at 9:00 a.m., we will review salt marsh habitats and give an overview of the common plants found in these areas and how they are adapted to survive in these salty locations. After the presentation, participants will drive to the first location for the start of a walking tour with biologist and past WEBS board member, Jim Young. This field-based walking tour includes an easy to moderate 1.5 to 3-mile hike through muddy, wet sand, and loose sand areas. Trails may be covered by brush. This program is best suited for participants 12 years and older who are comfortable walking in these environments.

HOW TO PREPARE/WHAT TO BRING TO THE WALK
Participants will need to provide their own transportation between locations
Bring or expect to purchase a OR State Parks parking pass ($10)
Long pants and closed-toe shoes or boots (no flip-flops) — expect muddy conditions
Weather-appropriate clothing (prepare for variable coastal weather)
Insect repellent or protective clothing – mosquitoes may be present (WEBS will have a limited supply of mosquito nets available)

Upcoming Nehalem Bay Watershed Council Events

Submitted By: info@nehalemwatershed.org – Click to email about this post
Nehalem Basin Partnership (NBP) is inviting local landowners and community members to learn more about improving salmon health, water quality, and flood abatement in the Nehalem Watershed. In upcoming public meetings and tours, NBP will share streamside habitat restoration projects, updates, and opportunities relating to the Nehalem Landowner Engagement Initiative. The goal of these meetings and tours is to inform and engage landowners in conversations about restoration opportunities on their own properties that will improve critical habitat for Coho salmon, a keystone species in the Nehalem Watershed. Landowners with river or streamside properties are particularly encouraged to attend!

Public meetings will be held on Thursday, July 31st and Sunday, August 17th from 4-6pm in the Gallery Room at the North Coast Recreation District. NBP will be featuring the Nehalem Bay Watershed Council’s documentary about in-stream wood placements on West Fork Coal Creek and a slide show of current and past streamside restoration projects. Representatives from local Soil and Water Conservation Districts (SWCD), the Backyard Planting Program (BYPP), the Natural Resources Conservation Service, and Ash Creek Forest Management will also be in attendance. Landowners who are interested in improving salmon habitat, water quality, and flood abatement on their own properties will be contacted to schedule a site visit to assess restoration goals and opportunities.

A site tour will be hosted by the Nehalem River Ranch (NRR) on Saturday, July 26th, 2025, starting at 12:00 pm and lasting 1-2 hours. The Nehalem River Ranch is a ‘multi-species, pasture-based farm’ that raises grass-fed beef and pastured pork and partners with local farmers who raise chickens, grow cut flowers and produce other farm products. In 2020, NRR partnered with the Nehalem Bay Watershed Council to plant trees and shrubs along a mile of the Nehalem river and 4 acres of silvopasture. With support from Tillamook SWCD and the BYPP at Tillamook Estuaries Partnership, NRR also installed pollinator hedge rows between pastures. Because this is a walking tour through an active farm, we ask attendees to please wear sturdy walking shoes or boots that can get dirty.

“I’m very excited to share this project with our community,” says Zac Mallon, Director of the Nehalem Bay Watershed Council. “[NRR] is a great example of how managing invasive knotweed on the banks of the Nehalem River isn’t a lost cause. The conifers planted in this project will push the knotweed out as the forest canopy develops. The trees are now reaching a size where grazing among the plantings for knotweed suppression is possible too!” Mallon also says that this project will benefit salmon by absorbing nutrients from the fields, shading the river, and managing erosion by developing strong, fibrous root systems in the riverbank as erosion promoting knotweed gets pushed out. For more information about Nehalem River Ranch, visit their website www.nehalemriverranch.com

NBP will also be hosting a site tour on August 8th, 2025 from 2-4pm at the Hoffman-Casler Property and West Fork Coal Creek. This tour will feature riparian revegetation, a culvert replacement, and an in-stream wood placement.

For more information about site tours, public meetings, and the Nehalem Landowner Engagement Initiative, please contact the Nehalem Bay Watershed Council at info@nehalemwatershed.org or visit NBP at www.nehalembasinpartnership.com/Nehalem-landowner-engagement-initiative. The Backyard Planting Program at Tillamook Estuaries Partnership can be found at www.tbnep.org/programs/habitat-restoration/backyard-planting-program/ .

This work is funded by the Siletz Tribal Charitable Contribution Fund and the Oregon Watershed Enhancement Board. We thank them for their support in the Nehalem Watershed.

New Showtime for People vs Agent Orange

People vs Agent Orange-New Showtimes

On Tuesday, August 12 NCCWP will be showing the film The People vs Agent Orange in Astoria. We are grateful to have the use of the wonderful space at KALA, 1017 Marine Drive, Astoria for the screening. Doors open at 6pm with the film starting at 7pm. Food and drink will be available for purchase. Tickets are $5 each and will be sold at the door. We hope you can join us.
Another showing is also planned for Tillamook sometime this fall. Stay tuned!

About the film- The Agent Orange catastrophe did not end with the Vietnam War. Today, the world over, a primary chemical of the toxic defoliant (dioxin) controls weeds in farming, forestry, parks, and playgrounds. It wreaks havoc on the human genome, causing birth deformities and deadly cancers.
This investigative documentary interweaves personal with political struggles as it follows two heroic women who are leading a worldwide movement to hold manufacturers of these herbicides accountable. In France, Tran To Nga (Trahn-Toe-Nyah) sues the American chemical industry for poisoning her in Vietnam. In the U.S., Carol Van Strum exposes the continuing use of toxic herbicides, many still containing dioxin. Incriminating documents disappear. Activists are threatened. A helicopter technician secretly films the contamination of reservoirs. The massive industrial cover-up continues. The film won the 2021 Jury Award at the Eugene Environmental Film Festival.

NCCWP wants no more logging and pesticide use in community water sources regardless of who owns the land, and wants an end to pesticide applications near where people live, work and recreate. Safe drinking water and clean air are part of the public trust that we all are entitled to have. Manzanita Farmers Market week 10: Friday 4-7

Submitted By: info@manzanitafarmersmarket.com – Click to email about this post
We are officially halfway through the market season, and summer produce is starting to pour in! I still can’t get enough of the summer berries, but Fulton Farms has been bringing stacks of peaches and also fresh corn. I did spy the first few tomatoes at market last week, but they go fast! Never fear, though: this heat will speed up their ripening, and within a few weeks our farmers will be overflowing with fresh juicy tomatoes!

This week’s music is a second appearance by local band Mercury Coast. We loved their original music, beautiful harmonies, and tight rhythm section a few weeks ago. We’re happy to have them back!

The Hoffman Center will be joining us with some interactive kids’ activities. We also have a special appearance by Visions Face Painting, who join us for 2 weeks each summer. Our usual face painters, Goldea and Shirl, will be switching gears and offering fortune telling this week instead! With a bit cooler day in the forecast, it will be a lovely week to hang out at the market.

Our sponsor of the week is Viridian Architecture from Nehalem. A big thanks goes to them for supporting the market’s triple up SNAP match! I’ve recently had the privilege of working with Viridian on 2 affordable housing projects in our community. They are skilled, responsive, and fun to work with. Jim Fanjoy, Viridian’s founder, was a long time vendor who continues to keep bees and was on the board of the farmers market for 10 years. He says he sponsors the market because he loves the market and loves designing buildings in his community. The market helps make that community better, more prosperous, and more resilient.

See you at market, Friday 4-7, 635 Manzanita Ave behind the new city hall!
