20TH ANNUAL SUMMER ART CAMP

The Cannon Beach Arts Association is so excited to announce our 20th annual Summer Art Camp! This year camp will take place July 18 – 22, 2022 with a Pop-Up Gallery Show: July 23, 2022, 10:00am – 12:30pm @ the Cannon Beach Gallery.

There will also be a visit from Caesar the No Drama Llama on Thursday, July 21 from 3:00 to 4:30PM.

We have a new class coming up on May 1 at North Coast Mudworks in Nehalem! Register now at www.northcoastmud.com/pottery-lessons

Come in and spend 90 minutes making a simple and beautiful wall hanging that doubles as a trivet. You’ll make a few trivets and choose one to have us fire for you. You’ll even get to use our wall-mounted clay extruder-what fun! The $45 workshop fee includes materials and instruction for one trivet, but you can have us fire more for you for an additional $15 each. This class will be taught by Lindsay Yelas of Unearth Pottery.

​ Auditioning for a role in a play may be an exciting, yet daunting idea. But with an active live theatre community on the North Coast, the opportunities to be on stage are numerous.
A theatre orientation and audition workshop for those new to theatre or who want to brush up on their skills will be offered from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, April 9 at the Coaster Theatre Playhouse, 108 N. Hemlock St., Cannon Beach.
Anyone 12 years and older can participate in the free workshop.
Participants will explore the audition process, including warm-up, cold readings, monologues, songs and movement/dance. Resumes and headshots also will be discussed.

Sunflowers for Peace

Save the date: We’re hosting an art show/fundraiser for Ukraine in Cannon Beach on Saturday, April 30th. 100% of the proceeds will benefit Voices of Children, a group devoted to supporting children affected by the war.

We’ll be selling art, playing Ukrainian music and eating Ukrainian food and doing whatever we can to support this most worthy charity.

NEHALEM BAY GARDEN CLUB ANNUAL PLANT SALE

SPRING is HERE! And our gardens are growing Growing, GROWING!

For the past several years the gardeners of our region have relied on the annual Plant Sales at Lower Nehalem Community Trust’s Alder Creek Farm and Nehalem Bay Garden Club.

Alder Creek Farm (ACF) has traditionally focused on edible and native plants while the Nehalem Bay Garden Club (NBGC) sold a mix of ornamental and edibles. In January, NBGC members learned that ACF was not going to host a Plant Sale this year, due to a gap in garden management resources. NBGC members along with the community have grown to depend on the great plants that Alder Creek Farm grows as they select varieties that are proven performers in our coastal climate. We put our heads together and figured out a way to fill the gap and offer many of the plants that ACF has sold in the past. So your plant selections will be available from a local source as always.

For the past month NBGC members have been starting seeds and rearing the baby plant starts in their homes until they were large enough to transplant into 4” pots. They were then moved to the 9’ x 12 greenhouse at “Club Headquarter” at Don and Constance Shimek’s house. The greenhouse was a generous donation to the club a few years back and this year we were able to make full use of the resource and have it filled to the brim as our plants grow from tiny seedlings to “teenage” plants. Once they are large enough for gallon pots we are potting them up and finishing the growing in a full size hoop house. Thanks to the cooperation of the Trust, the NBGC began using the hoop house at the farm this week to continue growth of the tomatoes for one more month. They will be transferred to “Club Headquarters” and hardened off in time for our plant sale Saturday and Sunday May 7th and 8th. While our biggest crop focus this year is on edibles we will also be offering our usual ornamental plants; annuals, perennials, shrubs and a few trees.

The Sale will be held at 43080 Northfork Rd, Nehalem, OR 97131. Follow signs up Northfork Road or up Highway 53 to Nehalem Bay Garden Club Headquarters, located at the corner of Hwy 53 and Northfork Rd. We will have directional signs posted on both roads. Sale will be open from 9-4 Saturday and 10-noon on Sunday. We are thrilled to be able to partner with Lower Nehalem Community Trust to keep our community supplied with locally grown vegetable starts.

Nehalem Bay Garden Club donates proceeds from the sale to local organizations focused on food security and garden education in our community. Past recipients include North County Food Bank, Nehalem Bay United Methodist Church for their food programs, Food Roots, Hoffman Gardens, Alder Creek Farm, Nehalem Elementary Garden Program, and the mural at Nehalem City Park.

The Bay City Arts Center (BCAC) is pleased to announce the next in its 2022 Performing Arts Series with a Brazilian-themed concert by the jazz duo, Beléza!, Friday, April 15th. Beléza! (pronounced be‧lé‧zah) is made up of master jazz guitarist John Stowell and the celebrated flugelhorn virtuoso Dmitri Matheny. Taking its name from the Portuguese word for “beauty,” it’s a duo that formed from the two artists’ shared passion for bossa nova, samba, and the timeless music of Antônio Carlos Jobim. Dmitri Matheny is one of a handful of modern jazz masters specializing in the flugelhorn, and he is widely acclaimed for his “brilliantly imaginative” and “irresistibly pretty” playing.

“People think of [the flugelhorn] as a double for the trumpet,” says Matheny. “It’s a bigger instrument, you have to fill it with more air. To my ear, it’s just a better sound… Flugelhorn is to the trumpet like the viola is to the violin. The violinists get all the love, but the viola players really expand the sound.*”

John Stowell is one of the world’s great jazz-guitar masters, specializing in the intricate “chord-melody” style, which is perfectly adapted to Brazilian Jazz. Stowell has performed and taught in over 20 countries in his 45-year career, and has been hosting and performing jazz concerts at the BCAC for over 20 years.

Doors open at 6:30PM, with the concert starting at 7:00PM. Tickets are by donation–pay what you can–$20 suggested. Reserve your tickets via email (baycityartscenter@gmail.com) and pay for them at the door. Covid protocols officially lifted April 1st—masks are now optional.

Hey, BBQ!
I’m looking for the people out there who are the problem solvers, the ones who are there for others when they have a problem, who others come to when they are in conflict, and who spend too much time trying to solve other people’s conflict.
I have a couple of classes coming up at Tillamook Bay Community College that will teach you how to empower others to solve their own conflict. You can still help, but you won’t feel so responsible for the outcome. Can you feel yourself already relaxing as you envision offloading some of that responsibility?
When I was an attorney, people came to me to solve their problems. Being an attorney was incredibly stressful for me because I took on responsibility for other people’s problems. I had to figure out how to get the judge to see things from my client’s perspective and rule in my client’s favor, giving my client what my client wanted and needed. The other side was working just as hard to get the judge to rule against us, and it was a win-lose situation, so there was a lot of pressure on me, and I put even more pressure on myself because I wanted to do well for my client.
Maybe you can relate.
Maybe you aren’t an attorney, but people come to you and expect you to solve their problems – in the workplace, in your home, in volunteer organizations – and while you like helping people, you would like to teach people how to solve their own problems, and have them take responsibility for it.
I have two classes coming up at Tillamook Bay Community College that can help you to do just that.
On Friday, April 8, come join me for a one-day, experiential class where you’ll learn transformative mediation techniques. You’ll leave able to help people solve their own problems, so that they are less reliant on you going forward. Imagine how good it will feel to let go of that responsibility and stress!

He went from co-fronting the Robert Cray Band to leading his own band and recording nine solo albums; he toured the country with Steve Miller and Santana. Salgado also transformed comedian John Belushi into “Joliet” Jake Blues for the “Blues Brothers” film.
He won the 2010 Blues Music Award (BMA) for Soul Blues Artist Of The Year and went on to win the award again in 2012 and 2013. In 2013 Salgado also won the coveted Blues Music Award for B.B. King Entertainer Of The Year—the highest honor the blues world has to offer.
Blues Revue Magazine says Salgado’s music is “triumphant, joyful, blues-soaked R&B” and called him “one of the most soulful, honest singers ever.”
Despite relaxed Covid-19 regulations, the Coaster Theatre, at this time, requires masks (regardless of vaccination status) and proof of vaccination and matching photo ID. Exemptions will be offered for those unable to be vaccinated, who have medical conditions, or whose religious beliefs prohibit vaccination. On April 14th, 2022 Jon Souder, OSU’s Forest Watershed Extension Specialist will share elements of his new book Tree’s to Tap. This book summarizes the current scientific knowledge regarding the effects of forest management on drinking water. There are 337 public water providers in Oregon that rely on surface water for some, or all, of their supply. Many of these providers do not own their source watersheds and as a result have limited control over activities occurring in their source watersheds. This presentation will look at the ways in which logging, forest road building, herbicide use, and other activities related to growing and harvesting timber can impact the quality and quantity of water sourced from forested watersheds.

Jon A. Souder is the principal investigator for the Trees To Tap project. He is an assistant professor in Oregon State University’s Forest Engineering, Resources and Management (FERM) department; forest watershed specialist in the Forestry and Natural Resources Extension program; and the concluding director of the Watersheds Research Cooperative (WRC). He is the former executive director of the Coos Watershed Association in Charleston, Oregon, managing their water quality assessment, restoration and monitoring programs. He has a doctorate and master’s degree in Wildland Resources Science from the University of California, Berkeley and a bachelor’s degree in biology (limnology) from Marlboro College, Vermont.

It’s exciting to have Jon coming out to share his experience and knowledge with us.

The Lower Nehalem Watershed Council’s April Board Meeting will precede the talk at 5:00 PM. At the board meeting the LNWC will discuss regular council business and share updates on new grants being prepared and their projects around the watershed.

In this 2-class series you will learn how to read the instructions on a pattern, purchase the necessary materials, cut the pattern to correct size and finally, sew it. Despite relaxed Covid-19 regulations, the Coaster Theatre, at this time, requires masks (regardless of vaccination status) and proof of vaccination and matching photo ID. Exemptions will be offered for those unable to be vaccinated, who have medical conditions, or whose religious beliefs prohibit vaccination. These patrons must provide proof of a negative COVID-19 PCR test taken within 72 hours of the performance start time in addition to a matching photo ID.
