Last week (until June 29) to view an enjoyable and fantastic display of lifetime paintings created by local artist Marylou Andes at the NCRD Fireside Room (8-5 weekdays only). Spanning over five decades of her work, the exhibit features detailed seashore and mountain scenes, wildlife, and flowers along with hand painted sand dollars. Nearly 60 beautiful works in watercolor, acrylic, oil, and pastel media depicting the natural world are available for purchase at very affordable prices with commissions going to NCRD and other local charities. Object Stories

We all have them. The cherished, resonant objects in our surroundings:
The arrowhead found in a cornfield
Grandpa’s fishing rod
A basket bought from a street vendor on that first trip to Belize
The cake plate that was a wedding gift
A painting just completed…

Such objects hold meaning, spark memories and become grounding talismans of our life experience.
Objects that can distill our ideas into something concrete; we bring them along through moves and transitions, as tangible evidence of who we are and who we have been.

At this month’s gathering, we invite you to choose an object that evokes important memories and/or a sense of identity for you. An object that you would want to bring with you, should you have to move to just one room at an assisted living facility. An object that would remind you who you are, when your other choices have diminished. Bring this item with you to the Conscious Aging and Community Connections event (or if it’s too large, bring a picture).

You will have an opportunity to tell the story of your cherished item, to explain what it evokes, and what meaning it holds within your unique life course. In the act of focused story telling, we may strengthen our connections, consider together our various life journeys, and continue our community conversation about aging consciously, and imagining our possible futures.

Some people rush to see a train wreck. This presentation is about Shipwrecks! Come hear Jennifer Kozik talk about the Shipwrecks of the Pacific Northwest. This will be a conversational event. Jennifer will show some slides and read some passages but she will also engage the audience. Members of the Maritime Archeological Society can talk about their activities and you can learn about uncovering the mysteries of the deep.

NVHS will also present information about its own efforts to protect and preserve our local history. The Sir Francis Drake Society will be on hand to talk about the upcoming 450th anniversary of Drake careening his ship on America’s west coast before heading across the Pacific. Did he do it in Nehalem Bay?

We will be upstairs in the Pine Grove. The doors open at 1:00 and let the conversation continue until 4:00. This is a free event.

This is a “Don’t Miss” event! We asked Jennifer Kozik to come to the museum to do a book reading and she agreed. Since then, it appears that we will have a crowd so we booked the Pine Grove (same address, just upstairs). Jennifer will be bringing some other leaders from the Maritime Archeological Society and they will be available to join the conversation. She has some slides and will read some passages from the book. She will bring some books to sell but, if you want to get a head start, the books are available at Cloud and Leaf.

Nehalem Valley Historical Society will have members present too and we will talk about some of our upcoming activities. Also represented will be members of the Sir Francis Drake Society to talk about their belief that Drake careened the Golden Hind in Nehalem Bay.

This is going to be very conversational. Doors open at 1:00 pm and we’ll let the conversation go on until 4:00. See you there.

If you’re new to our community or not quite sure what it is we do, we thought to share a little more about what to expect.

We begin by gathering in a circle, setting an intention, and doing a simple embodiment practice to help us arrive and connect with ourselves.

From there, we’ll move into a period of free-form movement. There is no right way to participate. You might dance, stretch, rest, sit quietly, close your eyes, connect with others, or simply enjoy the music. The invitation is to listen to your body and follow what feels true for you.

After the movement portion of the evening, we gather in a circle and pause to integrate the experience. We then come back together for a closing circle and an opportunity to share reflections from the evening.

People come for all kinds of reasons: to move, connect, process, explore, or simply enjoy being present. Whatever brings you here, you’re welcome.

Steel Magic Northwest, performs Free Concert in Cannon Beach’s Downtown City Park on Sunday, June 21st

A steel drum orchestra, Steel Magic Northwest plays the hits you know and love.

But Steel Magic Northwest is as much about making good people as it is about making good music! Student participants learn much more than just music in the steel band. They develop teamwork skills, leadership through mentoring, an increased sense of responsibility to the group, social skills, and they see on a regular basis the fruits of their dedication.

The steel band is different than school band or orchestra in that the director doesn’t stand in front with a baton; the students themselves are in front, and therefore have a heightened sense of ownership of the performance.

This free, family friendly concert begins at 5:00PM. Attendees are encouraged to bring blankets, low-backed chairs and fully stocked picnic baskets.

The park is located in downtown Cannon Beach, northeast of the Chamber of Commerce at 2nd & Spruce.

The concert is produced by the Tolovana Arts Colony and made possible by a Community Grant from the City of Cannon Beach.

It looks like perfect weather for the farmers market this week, and we have a full roster of vendors lined up!  It’s nearly summer solstice, and every week there’s more to choose from at the market.  Moon River is swimming in peas, Fulton Farms told me they’ll have apricots this week, and A&B’s cherries are going strong.  

In addition to local produce, hot food, and baked goods, we have lots of value added foods!  Have you tried Condea’s Farm Big Leaf Maple Syrup, made from native maples in the Clatskanie forest?  They’ll be selling that along with fresh kettle corn this week!  Picnic Eats is another new vendor selling sizzling hot sauces and irresistable chili crunch made right here in Wheeler. The North Oregon Coast Symphony concludes its 2025-26 season with two concerts in June titled “Ancient Echoes, New Tides.” These will be very
special events, as the orchestra is honored to present the world premiere performances of We Await a Glassy Sea by composer Isabella Morrill. This evocative piece was commissioned for NOCS by two generous donors, and has become a favorite of our musicians.
Another highlight of the program will be Cécile Chaminade’s lovely Concertino for Flute and Orchestra, featuring NOCS flautist Melissa Lagerquist.
Outdoor Overture by the famous American composer Aaron Copland and Symphony No. 5 by the lesser known Ferdinand Ries will round out the
performances. Melodies in Copland’s piece probably will sound familiar to an audience, as will some themes in Ries’s symphony. Ries studied and worked with Beethoven, whose musical influence on Ries is obvious.
The first concert will take place on Saturday, June 13 at the Nehalem Elementary School Gym (36300 8th St., Nehalem, OR) beginning at 3:00 pm.
The second concert will be on Sunday, June 14, at the Charlene Larsen Center for the Performing Arts (588 16th St., Astoria, OR) at 3:00 pm.
Admission for both concerts will be: $10 Adults, ages 18 and under FREE (children 12 and under with adult supervision.) Tickets will be available at
the door for the Nehalem concert (cash and personal checks only.)

Fiddle Jam at the Pine Grove
Thursday June 25th, 5pm

Come share your favorite fiddle tunes and play along with others! We will play traditional tunes of various styles (Irish, Bluegrass, etc..) All ages, all ability levels, all instruments welcome!

Don’t know many tunes?
No problem. The host will share new tunes and offer ways to participate and pick up what you can. Listening is always encouraged.

Don’t have a fiddle? Loaner fiddles available to try!

Slow Jam/Fast Jam:
The first 30 minutes or so will be a slow jam to allow less experienced players to share tunes they’ve learned as well as learn new ones at a slower tempo. More experienced players are encouraged to participate in the slower portion to support new players. The second portion of the jam, we will pick up the speed to allow more experienced players to play tunes “up to tempo” and allow new players an opportunity to listen and see where they might be headed with some more practice.
