Hoffman Center for the Arts March Gallery Exhibition

Submitted By: i.downes-leguin@hoffmanarts.org – Click to email about this post
HOFFMAN CENTER FOR THE ARTS GALLERY SHOW IN MARCH WILL FEATURE WORKS BY CHRISTINE HARRISON, JAN BRANHAM, AND CERAMICS BY SHANE SJOGREN

hoffmanarts.org/events/march-gallery-exhibition/

Christine Harrison has lived on the Oregon Coast for the past twenty-five years. She is one of the founding members of Art Accelerated, an arts non-profit for Tillamook County artists. Harrison’s deep connection to coastal land, weather, and water has greatly influenced her art. She looks to capture a sense of place in her work, which led to her investigation of botanical dye printmaking. Using local flora and fauna to make dyes and ink for artmaking, Harrison is able to physically embody the landscape. The pieces in this show were all made using local tannins and botanical prints.

Jan Branham is a printmaker who splits her time between Manzanita and Corvallis. Branham’s work is from her collection “Ansisters and Mancestors.” The pieces incorporate collage and print making, such as linocut, woodblock, monoprint, collagraph, as well as the mixing of media to satisfy the artist’s image making curiosity. The collection is inspired by snapshots of the artist’s relatives and family friends taken 1920-1950s on a Kodak Brownie camera. Branham chose individuals from the snapshots, drew them in larger format, added embellishments and created printed, collaged, and mixed media images to develop a narrative.

Shane Sjogren resides in Wheeler. The colossal vegetation of the forests and the pulse of the Pacific inform Sjogren’s ceramic works. His ideas flourish from observations of the environment of the Oregon Coast. Throughout the process, Sjogren’s initial inspiration transforms rapidly as the work progresses. The resulting piece often contains the dual purpose of function and diversion—a kelp leaf may seem to consciously flow into the form of a flower vase.

We invite you to view art March 2 through 24, Thursdays through Sundays from 12-5 pm.The not-for-profit Hoffman Center for the Arts is located at 594 Laneda Avenue, Manzanita, Oregon.

Come Hear Stories & Poems from Friends and Neighbors

For two years, our friends and neighbors have submitted heartfelt and often poignant stories and poems to Community Writes, a program of the Hoffman Center for the Arts. The Hoffman Center would now like to share that work more broadly and is hosting a Community Writes Open Mic event Saturday, March 18, from 4 – 5:30 p.m. Join us and support our flourishing community of writers. No more than 800 words please — and include an image if possible. Visit hoffmanarts.org/about/programs/writing/ for more information or to check our previous submissions.

Cannon Beach Comedy Festival – March 17-18th

Submitted By: tolovanaartscolony@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
Comedy is Coming to Cannon Beach!

The Cannon Beach Comedy Festival goes off March 17-18th at the Coaster Theatre.

Headliners include the nationally renowned Kyle Kinane and award-winning Brent Weinbach.

Tickets are on sale now at CannonBeachComedyFestival.com.

The bill includes Arlo Weierhauser and Shain Brenden, both of whom have been named “Portland’s Funniest Person.” For a full list of comedians, check out our website (and get tickets!).

On Kyle Kinane (performing Saturday, March 18th):
“Gruff energy and laid-back demeanor mask Mr. Kinane’s skills as a storyteller and joke writer,” wrote The New York Times, “{Kinane} is at his finest when dissecting the worst experiences of his own life.” The Times continued that Kinane’s “bawdy vibe belies his undercover-sweetheart material,” adding: “Kinane’s a master of the pitter-patter refrain, which he deploys to develop a consistent rhythm throughout his act” equaling a “perfected illusion of casualness.”

Regularly touring the U.S. and beyond, Kinane has recorded comedy specials for Comedy Central, Netflix and more.

On Brent Weinbach (performing Friday, March 17th):
Weinbach is a recipient of the prestigious Andy Kaufman Award, recognizing innovative voices in comedy. He has appeared on “Conan,” Comedy Central, Cartoon Network, IFC, and more, as well as created viral internet sensations on his own YouTube channel.

L.A. Weekly called Weinbach “obscenely, disturbingly brilliant.” Time Out NY added that his work is “weird in the best way.”

The Cannon Beach Comedy Festival is produced by the Tolovana Arts Colony, a long-running coastal nonprofit. The event is made possible by a grant from the City of Cannon Beach’s Tourism and Arts Fund.
The Coaster Theatre is located at 108 N Hemlock St in Cannon Beach, OR.

We’ll be selling dozens and dozens of manzanita species, from groundcovers to small trees (give or take 7 years), including varieties that have been blooming in the Wonder Garden since early February through rain, hail and snow. Check ’em out along Laneda Ave!

So what’s the catch, you may wonder. Why this unprecedented early spring sale? Glad you asked.

Concerts this weekend feature PETER AND THE WOLF with Liz Cole narrating

Submitted By: sdawagner@icloud.com – Click to email about this post
The North Oregon Coast Symphony continues its 2022-2023 season with two concerts this weekend. The orchestra, under the direction of conductor Cory Pederson, is an ensemble of North Coast musicians offering live classical music in local venues. Titled “Playful Inspirations”, the afternoon concerts will feature Serge Prokofiev’s “Peter and the Wolf”. This classic children’s tale set to music is the perfect form for introducing young people to the various orchestral instruments, as each character in the story is represented by a musical “voice.” The narrator will be Liz Cole, an award-winning stage and TV actor (“Seinfeld”, “Star Trek”, “ER”) who now lives in Manzanita.
The program will begin with Peter and the Wolf, and children (with adult supervision) are encouraged to attend. Admission is free for children12 and under.
Other highlights of the concerts include a Vivaldi guitar piece performed by Jim Achilles, solo piano pieces performed by Diane Amos, and small ensemble presentations. The balance of the program will feature full orchestral works by Mendelssohn, Rossini, and Beethoven.

The first concert will take place on Saturday, March 11 at St. Catherine’s Episcopal Church (36335 N. Hwy 101, Nehalem, OR) beginning at 3:00 pm. Tickets will be sold at the door only for this concert.
The second concert will be on Sunday, March 12 at the Charlene Larsen Center for the Performing Arts (588 16th St., Astoria, OR) beginning at 3 pm. Tickets will be sold online and at the door for this concert. To purchase tickets online, visit LarsenCenter.org., or by phone at 503-338-9132.

Join Us for Writers Read Celebration Tomorrow Evening

Submitted By: nmccarthy1276@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
If Ernest Hemingway arrived on the North Coast, what would he say and how would he say it?
Residents from Cape Meares, Nehalem and Wheeler will be among the writers who will ponder this question during the Writers Read Celebration on March 10 at the Cannon Beach Library.
Butch Freedman, of Cape Meares, will read his short story, “An Old Man Surfs”; Celeste Deveney, of Nehalem, will recite “A Dog’s Tale”; and Wheeler resident L Swartz will read their short story, “12-Step Famous,” during the celebration, which begins at 7 p.m. in the library, 131 N. Hemlock St.
It will be a hybrid event, with an online link available on the library’s website, cannonbeachlibrary.org
Writers selected to read the works they submitted for the celebration have all sorts of ideas about what Hemingway would say if he visited the North Coast. He might: ask why he left Cuba; tell stories and knock back a bourbon at the Driftwood Inn; recount how a boy reeled in a seagull; discuss fishing with a youngster at the library; or describe how a 12-step program member took flight as a crow.
Most of the writers, who range from Longview, Washington to Cape Meares, Oregon, will read their short stories and poems in person at the library, while at least three will read online.
This is the fifth year for the Writers Read Celebration. Writers from everywhere were asked to submit entries in any form, including stories, essays, poems, haikus, etc. on a theme; entries were limited to 600 words, and writers could submit up to three pieces each. This year’s theme was “Hemingway at the Beach: What Would He Say?”
A six-member panel of volunteers chose 16 from among 47 submissions without knowing who wrote them. Selections were made based on how closely the pieces followed the theme, word usage, content and the emotions evoked.
In addition to Freedman, Deveney and Swartz, other writers who were invited to the Writers Read Celebration are:
Darrell Clukey, Cannon Beach, Oregon: short story, “The Passing Visitor”
Dian Greenwood, Portland, Oregon: short story, “On First Seeing”
Craig Allen Heath, Longview, Washington: short story, “Papa at Cannon Beach”
Marc Imlay, Longview, Washington: short story, “The Young Boy and the Seagull”
Eve Marx, Seaside, Oregon: short story, “Nothing’s Going to Happen”
Steven Mayer, Cannon Beach, Oregon: short story, “Hemingway at the Beach”
Russell Myers, Vancouver, Washington: short story, “The Library”
Jennifer Nightingale, Astoria, Oregon: poems, “Papa’s Bindlestiff” and “Eel Grass”
Steve Price, Portland, Oregon: short story, “Leaving Cuba”
Scott T. Starbuck, Vancouver, Washington: poem, “Salmon Prophet”
James A. Tweedie, Long Beach, Washington: short stories, “Castaway” and “Birthday at the Beach”

Yes For Local Health Care

Voters in north Tillamook County have a chance during the May election to create a new era for local health and senior services.

The Nehalem Bay Health District – primarily the communities of Nehalem, Wheeler, Manzanita and nearby rural areas – is proposing a $10.25 million bond measure that, if passed, will transform health care in those communities.

The bond will support construction of a state-of-the-art, expanded Nehalem Bay Health Center and Pharmacy, a facility large enough and modern enough to provide specialty and dental care, and serve more patients close to where they live.

The bond will also renovate and modernize the exiting Nehalem Valley Care Center, a 50-bed skilled nursing and rehabilitation facility in Wheeler.

And … finance site preparation furthering the health district’s plans to eventually work with a developer to address health care and essential worker housing in north county.

In one project, the health district will address three critical Oregon coast issues – improved local health care, better options for our growing senior population and a strategy for workforce housing.
