The public is invited and encouraged to attend a FREE production of Cinderella. This production is brought to you by Missoula Childrens Theatre which is sponsored by Mudd Nick Foundation and NCRD with assistance from Neah-Kah-Nie School District and First Student Transportation.

This year nearly 70 children ranging in ages from 6-17 years old from the NKN school District have worked hard over the last week to learn choreography, memorize lines, stage terms, and songs.

Shows will be presented Friday (6/30) at 7:00 pm and Saturday (7/1) at 2:00 pm. These shows are offered at no cost to Friends, Family and the public thanks to Mudd Nick Foundation and NCRD. 100% of all donations will be donated back to the Mudd Nick Foundation to help ensure that this camp and many other experiences will continue for years to come to the children of the NKN School District.

This is a production you DO NOT want to miss.

I can’t tell you how excited I am for the Parade! We have such a good turn out of participants, I’m really proud of everyone stepping up to make this a memorable reboot!!

The parade will be held on Tuesday July 4th at 1pm

Beginner Wheel Throwing w/ Tara Spires-Bell
This 4-part class meets weekly on Tuesdays 4:00-6:30 pm
July 11, 18, 25, and August 1st

Learn the basics of throwing on the wheel: centering, opening, and pulling up a wall. We will focus on fundamental forms such as cylinders, cups and mugs then branch into how to shape pots from the inside to create volume and a pleasing shape.

You will also learn how to finish pieces and add your personal aesthetic by trimming, adding texture, making and attaching handles. The final class will be an introduction on glazes and how to apply them.

Instruction by local potter Tara Spires-Bell will include demonstrations, individual coaching, and personalized feedback. This class is designed for those with little or no experience in clay. Get an introduction into the ways you can explore form, function, color, texture, and design on the pottery wheel!

The class fee includes 15 pounds of clay and one 3-hour uninstructed practice session during Mudworks’ Open Studio hours.

Intro to Clay w/ Lindsay Ka’iulani
This 4-part class meets weekly on Wed.12:00- 2:30 pm

An Intro to Clay is designed to explore the many aspects of ceramics, as an introduction to both wheel-throwing and hand-building with clay.We will explore several techniques – utilizing the potters wheel, slab building and more.

Lindsay will work with students individually to meet their goals and explore their interests. She will make presentations, offer examples, and provide demonstrations.

The class will include fundamental skills and allow students to explore and play while focusing on a specific form to create and walk away with.The level of lecture and demonstration is varied according to the experience of the students.

The class will be taught by a very accomplished local ceramicist, Lindsay Ka’iulani, and is perfect for those new to clay.

The class fee includes 15 pounds of clay and one 3-hour uninstructed practice session during Mudworks’ Open Studio hours.

I am not a Firefighter or a Climate Specialist, but we are dry and the 4th is fast approaching. Here are some common sense tips to help reduce wildfire fuels:
1) Haul off piles of dead sticks/leaves. Don’t wait until the air is smoky and ash is falling, take it to the transfer station, it’s free!
2) Remove all dead trees and bushes.
3) Prune dead limbs from trees.
4) Be proactive. If you see a vacant lot with an accumulation of wildfire fuels contact the City.
5) Water. Keep trees and vegetation healthy.
6) Check to see that you are insured against wildfire?!?

A Triumph of Conviction: “5 Angry Councilors” Showcases a Heroine Mayor
“5 Angry Councilors” is a riveting play that draws inspiration from the classic 1954 television play “12 Angry Men”. The play was adapted for stage and film and has been given numerous remakes and adaptations, most recently as “12 Angry Jurors”. “5 Angry Councilors” applies the play’s intense deliberation to the realm of local politics. The play revolves around the City Council in an unnamed town, where the mayor, a remarkable character, stands as the beacon of integrity and leadership in the face of overwhelming opposition.
The mayor, brilliantly portrayed as the lone voice of reason and sound city policy, finds herself pitted against four councilors who embody different shades of resistance. The first is a long-time councilor who clings to outdated ideologies and is hesitant to embrace new perspectives. Two others are newly elected councilors, lacking the experience and the courage to challenge the status quo, easily swayed by the old-timer’s influence. Finally, a newly appointed councilor adds a different dimension of uncertainty to their position on the City Council.
Despite being consistently outnumbered and outvoted, the mayor demonstrates extraordinary determination and wisdom. Furthermore, the mayor’s position on giving citizens the right to vote on funding for a new City Hall project in opposition to the councilors who vote to ram through their pet project highlights her commitment to transparency and democratic decision-making.
The tension in the play builds as the mayor strives to maintain her principles and steers the city towards responsible policies against the odds. The plot raises doubts about whether she will ever overcome the scheming four councilors and manager opposing her. After 29 years in the solid waste industry, I will be making a significant change in my career. In early July, I will be leaving Tillamook County to take a position with the City of Bay City as City Manager.

I am grateful for the experiences I gained with Tillamook County, and proud of the progress we made during the past eleven years, including:
*During a time of turmoil in recycling markets, we managed to increase the quantity of materials recycled/recovered in our small rural county from just over 10,600 tons in 2012 to over 16,600 tons in 2021 – with the knowledge that each and every one of those tons is truly recycled,
*Our Household Hazardous Waste program is one of the most successful around, keeping over 100,000 lbs of harmful materials out of the environment each year,
*We launched our own Master Recycler class, starting with five students and graduating over 50 dedicated volunteers over the course of six years,
We demonstrated the value of locally recycled latex paint (over 10,000 gallons and counting!),
*Starting with nothing, we developed an organized composting program which now returns the nutrients from about 2,000 tons of yard debris back to our local soil each year, and
*Through an innovative combination of equipment, with grant support, we have collected, compacted, and recycled about 50,000 lbs (a mountain!) of Styrofoam into new products.

I am excited for what is yet to come, as significant upgrades and improvements to our transfer stations move forward, and especially as we prepare to benefit from the infrastructure improvements made possible through the Recycling Modernization Act.

Justin Weiss will be taking over my duties, as well as my phone numbers, as of July 5th.

I’d like to thank everyone who has supported these efforts, and been part of the experience, and I hope that our paths will again cross so that we can again collaborate.

Manzanita Parade Posters and Shopping Bags Available

Manzanita’s collectible Independence Day 2023 parade posters will again be on sale at the Friday, June 30th Manzanita Farmers’ Market. Local artist Lori Dillon who created the 2023 poster will be on hand to personalize and autograph copies from 4 to 6 p.m. The commemorative prints cost $30 each.

Something newer — canvas shopping bags decorated with the poster — will also be available. The bags cost $20 each.

All proceeds from the poster and bag sales go to the Manzanita 4th of July Parade organization. Costs include supplying participation ribbons, souvenir buttons, printing, banners, and signs. Also, volunteer badges, registration supplies, and trash services for the day of the parade.

The posters and bags are available at the Manzanita Visitors Center, 31 Laneda Ave. It is open Wednesdays through Sundays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Copies of several previous years’ collectible posters are still available.
