Just like Goldilocks who found the “just right” bed, it appears the weather will be just right at the Nehalem Bay Garden Club Plant sale this weekend. Two years ago it was wet, windy and cold. Last year it was blistering in 90 degree heat. The forecast for this weekend is sunny and 66 degree–just right!

So if you like sun and plants head over to the sale site on Saturday and Sunday at 43080 Northfork Rd, Nehalem at the junction of Hwy 53 and North Fork Rd with horse statues in the front yard and real horses in the back yard! Start on North Fork Rd at the blinking light in Nehalem and go 5 miles to the end of N Fork Road. The sale is on the left.

The sale starts at 10 on Saturday, May 11th and goes until 3pm. On Sunday, May 12th the sale is from 10 to noon.

Available at reasonable prices will be all kinds of plants: hanging baskets, planters with colorful flowers, perennials, annuals, vegetables, tomatoes, shrubs, trees, and houseplants among others.

Also on offering will be Mother’s Day gifts and a raffle. Raffle items include a basket of garden goodies, an outdoor palm tree and a garden statue. Tickets are $5 each or 6 for $20.

While you shop on Saturday only, bring your children so they can create wee succulent gardens as commitments to Planet Earth — and possibly Mothers’ Day gifts. All materials provided.

We encourage you to pay with cash or check and to round up! Nehalem Bay Garden Club donates proceeds from the sale to local organizations that share the Club’s mission. Past recipients include Food Roots, Hoffman Gardens, Alder Creek Farm, Tillamook Early Learning Center, Tillamook Chamber Comm Foundation, North County Food Bank, Nehalem Bay United Methodist Church for their food programs, Nehalem Elementary Garden Program, and the mural at Nehalem City Park. The Club has awarded a total of $12,300 in grants since 2020.

And while you are in the neighborhood, Aldervale Native Plants is having an open house on Saturday, May 11th from 9-4 across the road from the Garden Club sale. 43005 North Fork Rd.

– Riverbend Players, a beloved local community theater group, is proud to announce that it is the first arts organization in Tillamook County to join the Regional Arts and Culture Council’s (RACC) prestigious ARTS FOR ALL program.
This groundbreaking initiative aims to expand access to arts and cultural experiences for all Oregonians, regardless of income or background.

Join me for a Kosha Mapping Workshop Saturday, May 18th from 10 am- 12 pm. Workshop will be held at Yoga Roots Studio. During this two hour workshop, you will be guided through the five koshas, or sheaths of existence. In a process of discovery we will move from the most apparent part of our being, the physical body, to the subtlest part of our being, the spirit. We’ll journey through five meditations, integrating the experience through periodic pauses for illustration and silent reflection.

No yoga experience necessary

This tragedy happened to us a couple of years ago, and it occurs to me I should pass it along.
We were renting a house while we built our own. We suddenly had sugar ants. We called a local exterminator. He assured us that this was not harmful to pets. When he came to spray we took Sailor our golden friend of 14 years and put him in a back bedroom away from the spraying. He was healthy in every respect. A couple of days later suddenly Sailor was unable to stand up. I could pick him up but his legs just didn’t work. He could go number 1 just by letting it go on the floor. He was unable to go number 2.
After two weeks we had him put down.
I don’t have any scientific evidence that the ant spray was to blame. We made every effort to keep him away from it, but we don’t know that when we left him alone he wasn’t going around and licking the toekicks that had been sprayed.
I will let you form your own opinions.
I think this is something that is flying under the wire, and maybe nobody is putting 2 and 2 together.
I hope this helps somebody else avoid this tragedy

Dear Community,

The Lower Nehalem Community Trust is pleased to announce the appointment of Emily Akdedian as Interim Executive Director. From walks on Neahkahnie Mountain as a toddler, to catching a first crab in the sparkling waters of Nehalem Bay, and now witnessing her children grow amongst the majesty of the temperate rainforest—Emily’s connection to the Nehalem region brought her to the Trust in 2022 when she joined us as Education and Outreach Coordinator.

Emily’s professional career has spanned non-profit education and environmental work across three continents where she has been involved in organizational development, project management, program design and implementation, as well as equity work in collaboration with communities in rural areas of Costa Rica and remote Pacific Islands. She has engaged and managed volunteers on our public lands as the North Coast Stewardship Coordinator for Trailkeepers of Oregon, and during her time with the Trust has worked to connect our North Oregon Coast residents, visitors, and partners to place-based learning opportunities on our lands and in our region. She has implemented various public relations strategies to build awareness and promote engagement in LNCT’s conservation work.

Emily holds an M.A. in Natural Resources and Sustainable Development, an M.A. in International Affairs, and a B.A. in Cultural Anthropology. Her knack for combining knowledge, wit, kindness, and valuing partnerships, diversity, and inclusion as central to a healthy environment and community, have proven to be tremendous strengths for her work at LNCT and for the network that she continues to build.

Emily will oversee day-to-day operations and provide staff supervision and project management oversight toward mission related obligations. While working with the Board during this time of transition, she will help lead strategic and fiscal year planning. Please join us in welcoming Emily to this new role and leadership in our continued journey to conserve land and nurture conservation values in partnership with an engaged community.

The Nehalem Bay Garden Club which is 74 years young, has been holding its annual plant sale for about 40 years!

This year’s sale is coming right up—Mother’s Day weekend, Saturday, May 11th from 10-3 and Sunday, May 12th from 10 to noon. Location of the sale is 43080 North Fork Rd, Nehalem at the junction of Hwy 53 and North Fork Rd.

One reason we hold the sale is because we love plants and want to share them. Another big reason is that the Club is passionate about providing plants to locals at reasonable prices in a location close to home.

And for almost 25 years we have been distributing the profits from the sale back into our community to organizations that meet our mission. Since 2020 alone the Club has awarded grants totaling $12,300. Grant recipients include Alder Creek Farm, Food Roots, Hoffman Garden, Tillamook Early Learning Center, and Wheeler Waterfront Park. During the pandemic we wanted to help with food security and included Nehalem Bay United Methodist Church for their Senior Lunches and Food Pantry and North County Food Bank.

So come get some affordable plants without driving too far and help send your hard earned dollars back into our community.
