North County Food Bank to Move

Submitted By: northtillamookcountyfoodbank@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
The Nehalem Bay Health District and the North County Food Bank are pleased to announce that the two organizations have reached an agreement that will provide the Food Bank with food storage and distribution facilities in the soon-to-be-vacated Nehalem Bay Health Center and Pharmacy (the former Rinehart Clinic) in Wheeler.

The current Health Center facility will be vacant on or about October 8, 2025 while the Health Center staff and services relocate to the new Health Center in Wheeler.

Under the agreement with the Health District, the Food Bank will lease a portion of the vacated building for up to nine months while modifications are made to a Food Bank property behind the Hope Chest Thrift Shop that is located between Nehalem and Manzanita on U.S. Highway 101. The Food Bank has been working to prepare the new location for some time.

The new temporary location of the Food Bank will ensure that weekly food distribution will be minimally impacted, while work on the new Food Bank location continues. NCFB plans to be on its own property in approximately 9 months, and will keep our community aware of our progress.

The Health District expects to begin environmental remediation work on the old Wheeler hospital later this year. The work, including removal of hazardous materials in the 70-year-old building, cannot be done while the building is occupied. The Food Bank has occupied space in the lower level of the old hospital for many years.

The Health District shares with the Food Bank not only a long history of collaboration but a strong commitment to addressing food security in our community.

“The District appreciates and supports the Food Bank mission,” said Health District president Marc Johnson, “and we certainly appreciate their understanding that the condition of the old hospital has become increasingly problematic and expensive as a location for a vital community service.”

“The North County Food Bank Board, given a number of options for a temporary location, feels that continuing our partnership with NBHD and leasing the space offered in the old Rinehart Clinic building is the best way for NCFB to continue serving our community and neighbors,” said Jackie McCrady, NCFB Board President. “We hope to remain open without interruption to food distribution during our move in October.”

“The food bank sincerely appreciates everyone who helped make this happen, including Nehalem Bay Health District, Nehalem Bay Community Services, and members of our community,” added McCrady.

A formal agreement is expected to be completed soon.

Fall into Balance: Ease the Transition to Autumn
Sunday, September 21, 2025. 10 am -12 pm
$25. No one turned away for lack of money
Sea Dream Studio
35915 Highway 101 – Nehalem 97131

In this workshop, we’ll touch on many things that will make it easier to embrace fall and prepare for winter. In addition to actual balance enhancing practices (day and night are in balance on the Equinox, after all) we’ll use tools from Qigong to bolster our immune systems, explore teas that support mood and ward off illnesses and look at what both Western science and psychotherapy say about seasonal adjustment.

Traditional Chinese Medicine has a lot to offer about transitions, especially this tricky one as Summer ends. The Lung Meridian (acupuncture) is associated with unmet grief and judgement. In its optimal form, it supports discernment, learning, reflection and inspiration.

We’ll honor the season with gratitude, while protecting ourselves from S.A.D. (Seasonal Affective Disorder), that can arise in this quieter time. And we’ll explore embracing Hygge, or coziness, in our very own ways.

Katja Biesanz, LPC

I’m a psychotherapist, teacher, and Qigong practitioner. A former professional dancer/choreographer, I move from the energy body. I studied herbalism at the Milagro School of Herbal Medicine, been certified in Yoga and call myself a “Mystic Nerd” as I embrace both the miraculous and scientific. I have been a dancer and a healer my whole life.

FINAL PEEK AT PLANTS: WONDER GARDEN PLANT SALE

Submitted By: ketzel.levine@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
OK! This is it! The final post about tomorrow’s Wonder Garden Plant Sale!

And boy am I ready to wrap it up, as I introduce you to a few more of our damn fine plants on sale tomorrow, 9/20, 10am-12pm at the WG.

Today we’re looking at a few selections of California lilac, aka Ceanothus. Then there’s Dierama, the angel’s fishing rod and lastly Borinda, the lovely clumping bamboo.

Likely you’ve seen front yards with big shrubs smothered in impossibly blue flowers anytime between May and July. That’s Ceanothus, the California lilac, a genus that absolutely thrives here, unlike in Portland, where they end up looking like burnt toast.

For a generally well-known plant, ceanothus is still underutilized at the coast. We’re hoping to change that with several different varieties:

‘Concha’ is THE plant for you if you’re in the market for a really big stunner of a shrub, like 8’x8’. Otherworldly ultramarine flowers. Like all ceanothus, it’s easy to grow: full sun and no water.

‘Dark Star’ is a bit smaller with wowza flowers and very small, bite-size leaves. Bear in mind, the worse the soil is for these plants the slower they’ll grow. Consider that a plus. And if you don’t have any full sun left in your garden, consider yanking out those suffering sunburnt rhodies.

‘Italian Skies’ has the largest flower trusses of all the ceanothus. The plant tops out at 5’x7’ and the bloom color’s been alternately described as, well, light blue, medium blue and blue. Can’t go wrong.

Lastly, a ground-covering ceanothus: ‘Point Reyes’. This one I can say with certainty is light violet blue. Gorgeous useful evergreen that covers a lot of distance and smothers everything in its way.

Enough with the honking beasts, here’s a look at a particularly delicate perennial: angel’s fishing rod.
Dierama pulchurrimum ‘White’ is a sweetheart of a mid-summer bloomer that prefers not to be crowded by other plants. Any work required (full sun, rich soil, regular water) pays off with music of celestial beauty. What can I say, see the picture below.

Our last plant is somewhat dainty in appearance but rugged and undemanding. Clumping bamboos are different from running bamboos, the devils who devour property. Instead, clumpers just fill out slowly and don’t send out runners. We’re selling the delicate-looking Borinda angustissima, little leaf clumping bamboo, a soft green fountain topping out at 10’ and @4’ wide. We’ve got it in a lot of shade but it would also enjoy a nice big sip of morning sun.

Done! Check out the pix and see you tomorrow, 10am-12pm at the Wonder Garden!

THREE MORE PLANTS FOR SALE SATURDAY AT THE WONDER GARDEN!

Submitted By: ketzel.levine@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
Here’s the third of this week’s posts introducing you to the plants you WILL want to bring home from the Wonder Garden plant sale, this Saturday 10-12pm. See you at the garden!

Today’s line up features three varieties of one wildly popular genus, Callistemon! (Yes, I am excited about this plant).

The bottlebrush shrubs we grow in the WG have pretty much never had a bad day since they went in five years ago, and when they bloom late spring to early summer everyone wants one of their own.

Guessing there are a couple of reasons for that: super showy bottlebrush-like flowers; the way those flowers explode off the ends of the plant’s numerous, irregular limbs; and how the beguiling seed clusters left by the previous year’s blooms resemble intricate wooden beads.

And there’s more. The foliage is evergreen, the plants grow quickly, and with full sun (A MUST) bottlebrush are quite drought tolerant and confidence-boosting to grow.

First up, best name: Callistemon ‘Wetlands Challenged Mutant’. No, I can’t explain it. But I can say why I wanted this plant in the WG: its shape. Topping out at 7’ x 3’, this kind of tall and narrow accent mark is tough to find in something other than a conifer. And ‘WCM’ covered in flowers is like no conifer at all. The photo below says it all.

The mutant’s flowers are 4” long, lightly fragrant and soft yellow. Callistemon ‘Woodlander’s Hardy Red’ has flowers just as long but in a delicious shade of raspberry red. It’s a classic among bottlebrush, known for its toughness (skates through 10dF) and its ability to handle just about any soil. ‘Woodlander’s Hardy Red’ has a low and arching shape, topping out at 3’, but stand back! We’re talking 5’ of late spring bloom.

When decked out in her magenta purple blossoms, Callistemon ‘Eleanor’ turns heads every summer. Without fail. It’s definitely hard to miss this big beautiful shrub, which left unpruned will happily grow 6’x6’ and dwarf all competition for presence and drama. We love the wow factor when visitors come through, discouraged that she won’t grow in their climate. Ah, but that’s why I’m so high on this genus: it thrives in ours!
