SUMMARY

Part one of Neil Simon’s autobiographical trilogy: a portrait of the writer as a young teen in 1937 living with his family in a crowded, lower middle-class Brooklyn walk-up. Eugene Jerome, standing in for the author, is the narrator and central character. Dreaming of baseball and girls, Eugene must cope with the mundane existence of his family life in Brooklyn: formidable mother, overworked father, and his worldly older brother Stanley. Throw into the mix his widowed Aunt Blanche, her two young (but rapidly aging) daughters and you have a recipe for hilarity, served up Simon-style. This bittersweet memoir evocatively captures the life of a struggling Jewish household where, as his father states “if you didn’t have a problem, you wouldn’t be living here.”

Robert Liebler Obituary

Submitted By: thelieblers@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
Robert C Liebler passed away on December 13, 2022 in New York, 6 weeks shy of his 90th birthday. Brooklyn-born and a veteran of the Korean War, Robert lived in Wheeler for the last X years, moving back to Brooklyn in 2021 to be cared for by his family.

He is survived by his sons Scott and Todd Liebler, and Leon Vining, and his 5 grandchildren, Eliza, Isaac, Augustus, Thaddeus, and Jane.

He was fondly known as R.B. by his poker buddies and, in his memory, Robert would like everyone to buy into a game of Texas Hold ‘Em.

Advent Concert

Submitted By: anyalreeser@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
Thursday, December 15 at 6pm, at St. Catherine’s
(Doors open at 5:30pm)

FREE—This concert is Deb’s gift to the community, so if you have a heart to give then pass it on to others in need!

Join singer-songwriter Deb Montgomery for a quiet, early evening of music and candles: a kind-of-sort-of Advent Concert. Think house concert in a church. St. Catherine’s Episcopal Church is sweet and warm, open, inclusive, and welcoming.

“Montgomery’s music has been compared to many other talented musicians, from Natalie Merchant to Neil
Young. These are great comparisons, and Montgomery is an excellent storyteller. Her music is glorious in
its ability to make you cry, to make you feel, to make you find hope again.” — Beat Media

Deb has performed for many years—with and without a band—in Seattle, Toronto, Chicago, and New
York City. She recently relocated to Manzanita. You can find her music on iTunes and Spotify, or listen
to her albums here: debmontgomery.com and debmontgomery1.bandcamp.com/album/the-heart-of-it.

Hoffman Gallery December Show

Submitted By: HoffmanArtsNews@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
HOFFMAN CENTER FOR THE ARTS GALLERY SHOW IN DECEMBER WILL FEATURE MIXED MEDIA PAINTINGS BY DENNIS WORREL, MELISSA YOUNG, AND A COASTAL TEAPOT SHOW.

Dennis Worrel is a painter and printmaker living on the northern Oregon Coast. He worked as a soil scientist for over 35 years studying forest and desert landscapes across the western U.S. He is a founding member of Arts Accelerated and a member of Print Arts Northwest. For this show, Worrel painted and drew over botanical dye prints created by fellow artist and partner, Christine Harrison. In this series, Worrel calls attention to the natural world around us, encouraging connection and exploring our spiritual force of nature.

Melissa Young’s mixed media work will also be on display. Young is drawn to figure and portrait sketching, particularly working with the female form, as well as art journaling. Featured in this show, titled Time Will Tell, is a series of mixed media portraits inspired by the artist’s maternal grandfather’s family photos and history.

Additionally, we will exhibit a variety of local artists in a Teapot Show. The show was born from a desire to feature the incredible talent of our coastal artists. All the teapots will be functional, and you can expect a wide range of styles, shapes, and a variety of techniques.

We invite you to view art December 2 through 23, Fridays through Sundays from 1-4 pm. The not-for-profit Hoffman Center for the Arts is located at 594 Laneda Avenue, Manzanita, Oregon.

LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR OF ‘IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE: THE RADIO PLAY’ AT NCRD THIS WEEKEND

Submitted By: frank@wandascafe.com – Click to email about this post
You may know me as the owner of Wanda’s Café + Bakery, or as the Director of the hit production ‘Arsenic and Old Lace’ this past June, or as this year’s Director of ‘It’s A Wonderful Life: The Radio Play’ coming up this weekend at the NCRD Performing Arts Center.
When my family moved to Manzanita from Portland to take over the iconic café in Nehalem, we wanted to be more than just business owners. We wanted to be a part of something bigger, to be a part of the fabric of the community, and to be involved in the schools, to be involved in local governments, and to be involved in local community projects of all kinds. For it’s a community and how you spend your time in it that defines who and what you are.
As new business owners we were welcomed with open arms, and maybe a touch of skepticism from those that were concerned that we were about to ruin Wanda’s. As the years have passed since our takeover the community has expressed its pleasure with our stewardship by rewarding us with record visits and record sales, each year outperforming the previous.
But we wanted it to be about more than just the business. I was fortunate to be asked to join the board of the Riverbend Players Community Theater group and a new love was born. Having spent nearly 40 years as a radio broadcaster and TV host I found an unexpected new passion, theater. And not just any theater, but community theater.
A big part of the sense of community that I was looking for has been found within our group. It’s an opportunity for a distraction from the regular tasks of operating a business and a chance to be involved with some incredibly gifted and giving neighbors who come together to put on multiple performances a year for our little community on the coast.
Theater, and the arts in general, are such a gift we get to share with one another, and I am thankful for the opportunity to helm my second production this weekend.
The production is only as good as the cast and crew you work with, and these 15-20 people involved in ‘It’s A Wonderful Life’ are some of the best.
More intimately, it’s a loving experience for my family with my husband Patrick and daughter Colbie both being highly involved in the production with me.
After hours, weeks, and months of rehearsing they are ready to give their all in a delightful holiday tradition at the NCRD Performing Arts Center.
May your holidays be filled with love and laughter. And thank you for supporting Riverbend Players Community Theater with your presence in the theater, your support of advertisement in our playbill, and your spirited encouragement for all we do.
