Dear Friends and Neighbors,

We’re excited to invite you—and everyone you know—to join us for two important community protest events that bring us together for positive change!

Event #1: Nehalem Community Protest

Time: 12:00 PM – 2:00 PM

Location: Nehalem (gather across from the coffee shop)

Let’s unite as the North County Resistance for a peaceful, informative, and constructive gathering. Even if there’s a little rain, don’t let that stop you—we promise you won’t melt! Bring your own beverage or grab a coffee across the street. We’re also collecting donations for the Food Bank to help our neighbors in need. Your participation can make a real difference in our community!

Event #2: “NO KINGS” National Protest

Date: Saturday, October 18, 2025

Location: Manzanita

This is our biggest protest of the year, and we’re joining 2,456 locations across the United States—over 1.5 million people are already registered! Rain or shine, we’ll stand together against chaos, corruption, and cruelty. There’s no coffee shop nearby for this one, so be sure to bring your own drinks and anything you’d like to share with fellow citizens.

Why Participate?

Our protests are more than just gatherings—they’re moments to strengthen our community, raise awareness of important issues, and inspire hope. Every voice matters, and together we can create lasting, positive change. By showing up and supporting each other, we build a stronger, more caring community for all.

Take Action!

ONLINE Poetry Workshop Series with Emily Ransdell

Online Poetry Workshop: “Read, Write, Repeat”
with Emily Ransdell

Beginning on October 15th | Ending on November 19th
Sessions on Zoom: Every Wednesday for 6 weeks
5:30pm – 7:00pm
Tuition $125 | Scholarships are available

“Read, Write, Repeat”
A generative poetry workshop for all levels

One of the best ways to learn how to write poems is by reading poems. How did the poet do it? What craft techniques did they use?

Each week we will read one or more poems together and discuss what makes them tick. Then we will turn off our cameras and write a draft of our own, either on a similar theme or using a similar technique. Participants will be encouraged (but not required) to share what they wrote, with the understanding that this is not a critique class. We’re here to learn new writing techniques and to support each other’s efforts.

Between sessions, participants should plan to work further on their in-class drafts and come back prepared to show us how the piece has evolved. This sharing is likewise encouraged, but not required. It’s a rare poem that comes into the world fully formed or even revised to completion within a week. This class is designed to give you six solid drafts worth coming back to. You’ll learn to read like a writer and gain tools and techniques to improve your poems.

Materials needed: Pen & Notebook (or favorite writing materials); Access to Zoom via Laptop, PC, Tablet or Smart Phone is required.

Emily Ransdell’s poetry collection, One Finch Singing, received the Louis Award from Concrete Wolf Press and was published in 2023. Her work has appeared in numerous publications, including Poetry Northwest, Terrain, Rattle, and elsewhere. Emily divides her time between Camas, Washington and Manzanita, where she is a volunteer and frequent teacher in the writing program at the Hoffman Center for the Arts.

Civic Saturday Sermon

Submitted By: codger817@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
Join us Saturday, October 11 at 10 am for Tillamook County’s version of “Civic Saturdays” with Jim Heffernan hosting. The sermons explore new and better ways to be a citizen. They are aimed at developing “citizenship muscle. We will need “muscle” to bring power back to “We the People”, where it belongs. Each sermon functions as a stand-alone sermon. Don’t worry about missing earlier sessions.
This week’s sermon , number 15 of 19, is “Time Travel” and is 35 minutes long. Eric Liu talks about how truth travels through time by invoking an imaginary time machine that takes us backwards and forward a decade at a time. We can talk about the sermon afterwards, or not.
Sermon was first given on May 28, 2018, but, sadly, little has changed in the last seven years.

November 1st: Liberace and Liza – A Tribute on the NCRD stage

Submitted By: pac@ncrdnehalem.org – Click to email about this post
November 1st 7:00 p.m. NCRD Performing Arts Center stage. LIBERACE AND LIZA _ A TRIBUTE. An NCRD patron who saw this act in Portland some time ago, when she heard they were coming to Nehalem: “THIS WAS ONE OF THE BEST SHOWS WE HAVE EVER SEEN!” They have performed at Studio 54 in New York City, San Francisco, and many, many more! A wildly improbable but totally irresistible show that imagines what might have happened if Liberace and Liza Minelli ever shared the stage. They didn’t, of course, but thanks to David Saffert and Jillian Snow, now they do! Equal parts tribute, improv, and full-on fever dream, the show blends virtuosic piano playing, powerhouse vocals, and more sequins than is absolutely necessary. The setlist swings from Cabaret and Gershwin to hilarious re-imaginings of Britney Spears and Lady Gaga. THE SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE called it “SURREAL, YET ODDLY PERFECT!” A fitting description for this dazzling homage.
Reserved seating $30 general admission $25.

Saturday Oct 18th ComedySportz from Portland at NCRD!

Saturday October 18th 7:00 p.m. ComedySportz from Portland on the NCRD Performing Arts Center Stage. Back in 2019 they had the audience rolling in the aisles with their competitive, interactive improv, acting out audience suggestions while competing for points. They return ready to do it again! A referee controls the action and calls fouls if something is considered not family friendly. This troupe has played over 5,600 shows and, as part of CSZ Worldwide, has won 3 world titles. There’s more! On Sunday, the 19th, they will do an “Improv Class”, (free) at 1:00 p.m., and participants can learn improv from the masters! Reserved seating $25, general admission $20, available at www.tickettomato.com/event/9648. Special thanks to Manzanita Beach Getaway for their primary sponsorship of this fun event!

Fall Colors

Submitted By: jettkeyser@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
Returning from a 2,500 mile road trip to the Eastern Sierras of California and an elevation of 9,000 feet, taking in the slow onset of fall colors, I was reminded of the privilege we share in this beautiful riverside community, reminded that as we are able we can express our commitment and solidarity to preserve this democratic union. On October 18, another special day of gathering all across this country, we can continue to say no to the current republican administration…No Kings Day

We the People

Inscribed on the Statue of Liberty

“Give me your tired, your poor,
your huddled masses, yearning
to breathe free, the wretched refuse
of your teeming shore. Send these,
the homeless, tempest tossed to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door.”
Mother of Exiles

Brokering the ways of treason and
intimate violence, you now bring war
to our streets. The enduring dream
of community and country based on
realizing equality, precious and fragile,
is being lost. Behind a flag, a bible,
a train of endless lies, all your words
lift nothing and bring disgrace. Each
slight of hand and grifting distraction
invites hate and it is so easy to turn away
from taking responsibility. No goodness
can abide in deceit. We understand
what is better than this. For generations
our citizens have offered goodwill
and carried the decency to follow the law.
In this historic struggle, we will resist, hold
the line, find a way to take back the power
and voice of the common good. When justice
calls, and justice will call, your privilege
will be denied, a stronger scaffold will rise.
Behind bars you can heal what is broken
or go down failing in your own mad bunker.
As this timeless dream returns, we the people
will open the golden door.
