Nehalem Valley Care Center Receives OCF Grant to Address Nursing Staff Needs

$15,000 grant will support establishment of in-house training program

(Wheeler) – Health care staff shortages have become a chronic problem across the country and nowhere is the challenge of staffing health care facilities more pressing than in rural Oregon. Yet, thanks to a generous competitive grant from the Oregon Community Foundation (OCF), the Nehalem Valley Care Center in Wheeler has received valuable financial assistance to establish its own in-house nurse aide training program.

The $15,000 grant is supplied from OCF’s “Better Nursing Home Care Fund” that is designed to improve senior health care and the overall quality of life in Oregon nursing homes.

“This important funding will allow us to jump start our program and begin immediately training certified nursing assistants in our own building,” said Erica Knepper, RN, of Canyon Wren Consulting who provides nurse training and consulting services to the Care Center.

The Care Center offers long-term skilled nursing care, as well as skilled rehabilitation services from its facility in Wheeler. The Care Center is one of the few such facilities on the Oregon coast, and the only skilled nursing facility between Astoria and Newport. The Care Center employs registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, certified nursing assistants, certified medication aides, and personal care assistants who provide 24-hour, day in and day out care to patients.

Nehalem Valley Care Center employs approximately 45 staff members, half of those in the nursing department. Certified nursing assistants tend to be the most difficult position to recruit and therefore an in-house training program will allow the Care Center to help local talent pursue a career in healthcare. The goal is to have five enrollees in the first class, and the center will schedule further sessions as the need arises. The facility will also continue to partner with Tillamook Bay Community College’s nursing assistant program in order to help serve the healthcare community at large.

The Care Center is actively recruiting staff for a variety of positions that offer competitive salaries and benefits for important careers with a focus on helping others.

The Care Center is owned by the Nehalem Bay Health District and operated under a management agreement with Canyon Wren Consulting, an Oregon nursing home management provider.

The health district will soon announce plans to undertake a major renovation and modernization of the Care Center in the interest of enhancing care and overall patient experience.

RIVERBEND PLAYERS’ TICKETS ON SALE NOW FOR NEIL SIMON’S AWARD-WINNING PLAY ‘BRIGHTON BEACH MEMOIRS’

Riverbend Players is proud to announce that tickets for our first production of 2023 are now on sale at www.RiverbendPlayers.org.

Log on to select your performance date and select your seats!

Set in the Brighton Beach section of Brooklyn, New York in September 1937 during The Great Depression, this coming-of-age comedy focuses on Eugene Morris Jerome, a Polish-Jewish American teenager who experiences puberty, sexual awakening, and a search for identity as he tries to deal with his family, including his older brother Stanley, his parents Kate and Jack, Kate’s sister Blanche, and her two daughters, Nora and Laurie, who come to live there after their father’s death.

The new living arrangement is taking its toll on Jack’s health, as he has to work two stressful jobs to support the extended family.

Meanwhile, Aunt Blanche is interested in dating their neighbor, who has a drinking problem, despite Kate’s objections; Stanley faces problems with his own job when he stands up to his somewhat tyrannical boss, and later resorts to some shady means to support the family’s struggle; cousin Nora, whom Eugene has a crush on, is eager to be a paid dancer in a Broadway musical, even though the family’s circumstances might not allow it, much to her dismay; and cousin Laurie, who has heart problems and requires frequent doctor visits, is a source of annoyance for Eugene.

All the while the family has other relatives living in Poland, which is under invasion, and they are worried about what might happen if they remain there, or how they’ll be able to put them up if they escape and come to Brooklyn.

Update on County-Wide Business License (formerly Ordinance #88)

Submitted By: ruraltillamookbiz@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
In December and January, we posted on the BBQ about the rural business license (formerly Ordinance 88), and folks have continued to reach out to us with more information and links. (Thank you!)

The latest? Ordinance #88 is gone and the workgroup to revise it is on “pause”. But in a press release from the BOCC, it seems the idea of a rural business license is still being considered.

The Board of County Commissioners Press Release is uploaded to our website: ruraltillamookbiz.wordpress.com/about/
