Nehalem Bay Garden Club January Meeting at new meeting place and time

Submitted By: barbaraandchuck@nehalemtel.net – Click to email about this post

Calling all plant lovers!

The Nehalem Bay Garden Club will be 76 years young next spring! A very active group of 30 plus members is keeping this vibrant group going and the Club is always open to new members. Starting in January, we are changing our meeting time to the 4th Saturday at 10am to hopefully make the meetings available to more folks. So, if gardening is in your blood, or an interest that you would like to explore, please consider checking them out. No gardening experience is required, only an interest in learning, playing in dirt and hanging out with some pretty cool people!

The next meeting will be January 24th at 10:00am at the White Clover Grange, 36585 Highway 53 in Nehalem. The speaker is Katja Biesanz, who will share plant Latin with us.

The current mission of Nehalem Bay Garden Club is “To cultivate knowledge and love of gardening through educational programs and activities; to aid in the protection of the environment, native plants and wildlife; and to support public service through garden related organizations and volunteer opportunities.” The Club Objective from the 1978/79 yearbook was “To stimulate the knowledge and love for gardening, to aid in the protection of native trees, plants and birds.” So the legacy continues.

Nehalem Bay Garden Club’s big project is an annual plant sale Mother’s Day weekend. The 2026 sale will be Saturday, May 9th at the same location as the past few years at the junction of N Fork Road and Highway 53 in Nehalem. Please save the date! Going back to old roots, the 2026 sale will only be on Saturday.

The months leading up to the sale, starting in late January are busy ones, mainly starting seeds and potting up plants. Since many hands make light work, anyone interested in helping is very welcome. The Club meets nearly every week getting hands dirty and laughing a lot as the work is done. Please email barbaraandchuck@nehalemtel.net if you would like to know more about these work/play parties or about the Garden Club.

Proceeds from the annual plant sale are given to local organizations that meet the mission of the Club. We have been donating to the community for over 20 years. Since 2020 alone the Club has awarded grants totaling nearly $18,000. Grant recipients include Alder Creek Farm, Food Roots, Hoffman Garden, Tillamook Early Learning Center, Wheeler Waterfront Park and Nehalem Bay Health Center and Pharmacy. During the pandemic we wanted to help with food security and included Nehalem Bay United Methodist Church for their Senior Lunches and Food Pantry and North County Food Bank.

The 1978/79 yearbook also had a Conservation Pledge.
“I give my
Pledge as an American to save
And Faithfully to defend from Waste the natural resources of
My Country – its Forests, Waters
And Wildlife.”

Words to live by today.

You’ve been called by The Divine to live a life of Love.

And living a life of Love means…

You’re here to give your unique gifts that only you can give to co-create more Love, Peace & Prosperity on this planet.

You’re here to experience the One-ness of spiritual partnership as well as sacred union with another Divine being on this planet.

You’re here to experience the One-ness that occurs when you heal your own thought/mind distortions, traumas and pain, and then see the Miracles that ripple out into your family, your community, your country, your world from this.

You’re here to Love. Fiercely. Strongly. Clearly.
To Love yourself, to Love all beings around you – regardless of externalized labels.

You’re here to Love every bit of your life experience and let that energy radiate into the stratosphere.

You’re here to live as Love and to Be Love and to radiate Love – everywhere you go and in everything you “do” and be.

City of Manzanita Update: Localized Landslide Area Under Control

The City of Manzanita would like to reassure residents and visitors that the area of concern
related to recent erosion and soil instability is isolated to a specific location on city-owned
property and does not pose a widespread risk to the community.

City staff have taken preventative steps to reduce potential hazards, including stabilizing affected areas where possible and implementing protective measures ahead of the forecasted storm. The site continues to be actively monitored and assessed by City staff and technical professionals to determine the most effective long-term solution moving
forward.

Out of an abundance of caution, individuals and properties that could potentially be impacted have been directly notified, and the City will continue to communicate as conditions evolve.

At this time, the City of Manzanita remains safe, and there are no evacuations or general access restrictions in place. Residents and visitors are encouraged to remain weather-aware, particularly in areas with steep slopes or drainage concerns, and to follow any guidance issued by the City or emergency services.

The City appreciates the community’s cooperation and understanding as we take proactive steps to protect public safety. Updates will continue to be shared through the City’s website and official communication channels.

Protest in Nehalem on Saturday

Submitted By: pattyrinehart@nehalemtel.net – Click to email about this post
Dear Folks,
Yes, the North County Resistance Group will be out this coming Saturday, December 20 in Nehalem, from noon to 2 PM. Yes, it is going to be wet, cold, and windy. Wear your long underwear, two sets of clothing, raincoat and pants, and gloves. If can’t come for the whole two hours, please come and stay as long as you can. If you can’t come at all, please drive by and honk. Your support means a lot to us.

We thank you again for your support of all the organizations in our community helping to keep people fed and with some sort of housing support.

The dictionary I’m using at the moment is the Reader’s Digest Great Encyclopedic Dictionary1966. This dictionary is 59 years old.

Looking at the word democracy. 1. A form of government in which political power resides in all the people and is exercised by them directly (pure democracy) or is given to elected representatives (representative democracy), with each citizen sharing equally in political privilege and duty, and with his right to do so protected by free elections and other guarantees. 2. A state so governed. 3. The spirit or practice of political, legal, or social equality. 4. The common people, especially when regarded as exercising political power.

Now to skip through the letters to fascism and Fascism.

fascism: A one-party system of government in which each class has its distinct place, function, and representation in the government, but the individual is subordinated to the state and control is maintained by military force, secret police, rigid censorship, and government regimentation of industry and finance.

Fascism: The totalitarian system of government developed in Italy in 1919 by the Fascisti under Benito Mussolini to oppose socialism and communism: the government in Italy from 1922-1943, the principles of which were adapted by Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party to include the concept of racial supremacy.

Some words in these definitions ought to stand out to you.
Best,

Patty

City of Manzanita Declares Local State of Emergency Due to Landslide Risk and Forecasted Storm

Submitted By: cityofmanzanitaoregon@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
City of Manzanita Declares Local State of Emergency Due to Landslide Risk and Forecasted Storm
Manzanita, OR — [12/16/26] — The Manzanita City Council has declared a local state of emergency in response to discovering an area of city-owned land where erosion has caused soil instability and surface failure. Saturated ground conditions have led to sections of sedimentary material fracturing and sliding downslope, leaving exposed soil and debris. The area is being actively assessed and stabilized.
Unstable land conditions in parts of the city and a forecasted storm expected to bring heavy rainfall and strong winds, City officials are concerned that the anticipated weather conditions may increase the risk of landslides, falling trees, and damage to homes and public infrastructure, posing a threat to residents and emergency responders.
“This declaration allows the City to act quickly and responsibly to protect public safety,” said Mayor Kathryn Stock. “Our priority is ensuring we have the flexibility to respond immediately if conditions worsen.”
Under the emergency declaration, City Manager Leila Aman is authorized to take necessary actions to safeguard life and property. This includes coordinating with county and state agencies, expediting emergency contracts and repairs, deploying personnel and resources, and taking preventive measures where needed.
The declaration is made pursuant to Oregon Revised Statutes 401.309 and 279B.080, which allow local governments to respond swiftly when conditions threaten public safety. The emergency declaration also ratifies actions already taken by City staff in preparation for the forecasted storm.
The local state of emergency will remain in effect through at least January 8, 2026, and may be extended if conditions require.
City officials urge residents, particularly those in areas with steep slopes or known drainage issues, to remain alert, prepare for possible power outages or road closures, and follow any safety guidance issued by the City or emergency services.
Updates will be shared through the City’s website and official communication channels as conditions evolve.

We are nearing the Winter Solstice, the longest night of the year. Come dance the energy of crossing a threshold.

We are nearing the end of the Year of the Snake (Chinese astrology). Come dance the energy of a snake shedding its skin.

We are nearing the end of a “9” year (Numerology 2+0+2+5) -known as a year of completion. Come dance the energy of going through a portal. What wants to, needs to, demands to, be left behind? The energy of endings, of walking through doorways that you can no longer return through, of karmic closure, of releasing, of sloughing, of moving forward into your truest self, your truest purpose, is everywhere right now.

I am feeling this SO INTENSELY. You?

Let us come together and help move it along. Let’s find what is stuck or numb or congealed in our bodies and loosen it, return it to flow and let it go. We are right on time.

Call for submissions: Writers Read Theme is ‘From a Distance’

Submitted By: nmccarthy1276@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
Writers will have an opportunity to gain a new perspective when they enter their work in the Cannon Beach Library’s Writers Read Celebration.
This year, writers will explore and interpret the theme, “From a Distance.”
Some say perspective changes everything. What happens when you can only see something – or someone – from afar? Maybe it’s a planet glimpsed through a telescope, a loved one seen through memories, or a truth that only makes sense once you’ve stepped back.
In its eighth year, Writers Read offers writers of all ages from everywhere the opportunity to
write on a specific theme. All written formats will be considered (essay, story, science fiction,
poetry, haiku, etc.). The deadline for submissions is Feb. 2.
A panel of volunteers will select 10 to 12 works to be read by their authors during the Writers
Read Celebration on March 6 in person at the library or via Zoom.
Writers are asked to follow these guidelines:
• Authors are limited to three entries with a 600-word maximum per entry.
• Submissions should be in Word format.
• Include a separate cover letter with the writer’s name, email and phone number. Please do not include the author’s name or contact information on the entry document so authors remain anonymous to the reading panel.
• Email submissions to info@cannonbeachlibrary.org
The NW Authors Series Committee organizes Writers Read, as well as monthly author presentations and other events at the Cannon Beach Library. A recording of last year’s Writers Read Celebration is available on the library’s website, cannonbeachlibrary.org/events-and-programs/recorded-presentations. It also appears on the library’s YouTube page.
