Manzanita July 4th Parade Posters on Sale to Benefit Parade

Submitted By: laura@nehalemtel.net – Click to email about this post
Manzanita’s popular 4th of July parade will return this year and a brand-new poster commemorating the occasion and its theme “Return to Glory” honors the event.

The traditional, small-town celebration, a highlight of any summer, was suspended for three years, due to the concerns about the pandemic.

The parade features walkers, marchers, dancers, horses, flags, home-made floats, bicyclists, classic cars, fire trucks, bookmobiles, marching bands and, every year, something new.

“I was honored when I was asked to create a poster for this year’s big day,” said Manzanita artist Lori Dillon. “It was important to me to depict Neahkahnie Mountain, the bright colors, the candy, the fun, and especially the people of all ages marching and watching.”

The posters, created in pen, ink and watercolor, will be on sale at the Manzanita Visitor Center for $30 each, with proceeds helping fund the parade itself. The Visitor Center is located 31 Laneda Ave., and is open Wednesdays through Sundays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Posters will also be available at the first Manzanita Farmers’ Market of the season, Friday, May 26. Dillon will be on hand that day to autograph them.

Information about the parade, including participation applications and support opportunities, can be found at the Manzanita visitors’ website: visitmanzanita.org

’12 ANGRY JURORS’ OPENING NIGHT IS 3 WEEKS FROM TONIGHT www.RiverbendPlayers.org
NCRD PERFORMING ARTS CENTER 06/02 – 06/18
3 weeks from opening night and there are plenty of great seats available for all 9 shows.
Pick your performance date then select your favorite seats!
Based on the award-winning movie 12 ANGRY MEN and Directed by Frank Squillo (ARSENIC AND OLD LACE and IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE: THE RADIO PLAY).
12 ANGRY JURORS takes place on a hot summer day in New York City.
After a lengthy trial, a jury must decide whether a 19-year-old man is guilty of murdering his father.
The jury votes 11-1 that the man is guilty of the crime, but the law requires a unanimous vote by all 12 jurors to pass judgment.
Tempers flare as the eleven jurors try to convince the 1 dissenter to come to their side.
As the evidence is re-examined, however, new uncertainties come to light, forcing everyone to truly question whether there is some measure of “reasonable doubt”.
Twelve Angry Jurors is a courtroom thriller that puts you on the edge of your seat while powerfully exploring what it means to live in a democracy.

Cannon Beach Library Hosts Poet, Artist, Author Jessica Mehta

Submitted By: nmccarthy1276@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
Poet, artist and author Jessica Mehta will discuss her writings and read her poetry at the Cannon Beach Library at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 13.
This is a free, hybrid event; attend the event at the library or watch online: www.cannonbeachlibrary.org.
The award-winning interdisciplinary poet, artist and author is hosted by the library’s NW Authors Series.
The Oregon author of 15 books, Mehta will discuss “Decolonization on a Global Scale.” Her works have been described as organic, powerful and vulnerable. Space, place and ancestry are driving factors in her work.
Mehta has undertaken poetry and artist residencies around the globe, including the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust in Stratford-Upon-Avon and the Crazy Horse Memorial and museum in South Dakota. Her work has been featured at galleries and exhibitions in Washington DC, Sweden and New Mexico. She also was a Fulbright Senior Scholar.
“My goal as a person and an artist is to inform, create conversations and in many cases to educate—particularly non-indigenous audiences,” says Mehta, a citizen of the Cherokee Nation. “The key word here is ‘goal,’ not ‘responsibility.’”
“The emotional, mental, spiritual and oftentimes physical labor of educating non-indigenous audiences is not for everyone. It is a gift some of us offer when, where and how we can. It is not a requirement of any Native person.”

Walk your Talk

Submitted By: Tulemiller@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
A healthy community needs leaders strong enough to take a stand. Each member of our council was elected for their knowledge, strengths and the unique skills they have to better our community. Strong leaders, problem solvers, do not use rules of Follow the Leader to decide what is best for the citizens…they listen to their constituents, ask questions, research alternatives, ask more questions, listen again, before decisions are made. No matter who is leading the charge, regardless of what their fellow councilors think, each individual council member has made a commitment to the people. Expectedly, to do the best job they can, make their decisions with thought and honesty….”There can be no daily democracy without daily citizenship” (R.Nadar)
I would like to commend Deb Simmons, Mayor of Manzanita, for exemplifying the role of city councilor. She is intelligent, respectful, a problem solver , strong in her beliefs, caring and a great listener. She saw a need, ran for office and has been a force to be reckoned with from day one. Her passion for citizen involvement is certain…she listens, researches, collaborates, and listens again. Mayor Simmons most definitely walks her talk.
Deb has been unjustly attacked, again and again, by the same group of unhappy campers, and she just moves on! She has too much too do in her Mayor job to be detoured by naysayers…my biggest kudos for her strength here.
Deb is 100% committed to the healthy growth of Manzanita and its citizens. I look forward to the day when the negative mudslinging stops, and we can all work together for a common goal…our city!
“Democracy belongs to those who exercise it” (B.Moyers)

Health District Praises Service of Jeff Slamal

Submitted By: nbhdistrict@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
During its regular meeting on May 10, 2023 the board of the Nehalem Bay Health District expressed
its profound sadness over the recent death of Jeff Slamal, the Health District’s chief executive
officer.

Jeff, who had held the administrative position with the District since 2017, died suddenly on May 7.

The board expresses its deepest condolences to Vicki, Jeff’s family and his many, many friends.
Jeff informed the board on March 20 of this year that he intended to retire in June at the end of the
current fiscal year, and he indicated his desire to work closely with his replacement to ensure a
smooth transition.

“Jeff’s decision to retire was accepted with genuine regret, but we certainly recognized and
appreciated his strong desire to spend more time with his wife, family and friends, while continuing
to enjoy his life as a musician and his role as a member of the board of the Riverbend Players,” said
board president Marc C. Johnson. “The tragedy of Jeff’s passing is made even more profound with
the realization that he will not enjoy his well-earned retirement after a lifetime of dedicated work and
public service.”

Johnson said he was speaking for all health District board members in praising Jeff Slamal’s service
to the District and the larger community. Jeff has been a key participant in every aspects of the
District’s work for the last six years from the development and execution of a strategic plan,
including preparation of a general obligation bond measure focused on local health and senior care
to strengthening relationships with the District’s community partners.

“Jeff never met a stranger,” Johnson said. “He was a tremendous ambassador for the District and its
mission. He was a ‘get it done’ kind of guy with a great sense of humor who was also tremendously
caring and very people focused. As a friend and colleague there was none better.”
