FREE CONCERT: The Hackles and Michael Hurley, Sunday Sept 17 in Cannon Beach

Submitted By: tolovanaartscolony@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
Two of Astoria’s best—The Hackles and Michael Hurley—visit Cannon Beach for a free concert in the park on Sunday, September 17th.

Join us for an evening of sweet strumming and stirring harmonies, as The Hackles and Michael Hurley make a rare visit to Cannon Beach.

The Hackles–Luke Ydstie (guitar), Kati Claborn (banjo) of Blind Pilot, along with Halli Anderson (fiddle)—deliver “Highly refined songwriting and awe-inspiring harmonization,” according to Rough Trade. The group’s latest record, “What A Beautiful Thing I Have Made,” was released this spring.

The album is “is achingly raw and breathtakingly alive,” exclaimed Atwood Magazine. “The Oregon group’s radiant, resonant music provides a captivating backdrop for life’s deeper questions and considerations, compelling us to step back out of our everyday and once again dive deep into ourselves, our worlds, and the things that make our lives worth living.”

Joining the bill is Astoria’s Michael Hurley, who the New York Times dubbed “an original folk iconoclast.”

“This reluctance to work by anyone else’s code epitomizes the recalcitrant idealism of Hurley, one of American folk music’s longest-running survivors and visionaries,” wrote the Times. “For six decades, Hurley has chronicled his passions, problems and curious predilections on several dozen albums, often self-made or self-released. His dependable strangeness and self-reliance cast him as a spiritual forebear and elder ally for songwriters at the country and folk fringes of indie rock,” inspiring luminaries such as Cat Power, Yo La Tengo and Will Oldham.

Hurley will be accompanied by members of The Hackles.

This free, family friendly concert begins at 5:00PM. Attendees are encouraged to bring blankets, low-backed chairs and fully stocked picnic baskets.

The park is located in downtown Cannon Beach, northeast of the Chamber of Commerce at 2nd & Spruce.

The concert is produced by the Tolovana Arts Colony and made possible by a Community Grant from the City of Cannon Beach.

Let’s talk

Submitted By: codger817@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
Tired of angry, divisive politics? Let’s try this, getting together for civil conversations about the things that matter to us. Everyone welcome, whether you “lean-red”,or “lean-blue”, or are “in-between”. Let’s get together on Zoom and just talk and listen. My hope is that we’ll gain a better understanding of each other by listening to each other. I’m anxious to talk about the book, “Talking Across the Divide”. But maybe together we can find something else to talk about. Maybe, what’s your favorite ice cream? Ground rules are very simple. (1.) Everybody brings their best manners. (2.) Nobody talks for more than 4 minutes at a stretch. (3.) Nobody comes to win an argument or change anybody’s mind. (4.) Listening is more important than talking. Zoom meetings Saturday’s. at 10AM us06web.zoom.us/j/83311730121?pwd=dHFxYmdsUk9BZTRkUW5LOWFoSFpLUT09 If a different day or time would work better for you or for more information contact Jim Heffernan at codger817@gmail.com

ANNOUNCING THE RIVERBEND PLAYERS 2024 SEASON LINE-UP

CRIMES OF THE HEART:
Opens March 1st

The scene is Hazlehurst, Mississippi, where the three Magrath sisters have gathered to await news of the family patriarch, their grandfather, who is living out his last hours in the local hospital.

Lenny, the oldest sister, is unmarried at thirty and facing diminishing marital prospects; Meg, the middle sister, who quickly outgrew Hazlehurst, is back after a failed singing career on the West Coast; while Babe, the youngest, is out on bail after having shot her husband in the stomach.

Their troubles, grave and yet somehow hilarious, are highlighted by their priggish cousin, Chick, and by the awkward young lawyer who tries to keep Babe out of jail while helpless not to fall in love with her.

In the end, the play is the story of how its young characters escape the past to seize the future—but the telling is so true and touching and consistently hilarious that it will linger in the mind long after the curtain has descended.

THE PLAY THAT GOES WRONG:
Opens May 31st

From Mischief, Broadway masters of comedy, comes the smash hit farce.

Nevertheless, the accident-prone thespians battle against all odds to make it through to their final curtain call, with hilarious consequences!

Part Monty Python, part Sherlock Holmes, this Olivier Award–winning comedy is a global phenomenon guaranteed to leave you aching with laughter!

THE GIRL ON THE TRAIN:
Opens September 6th

Rachel Watson longs for a different life.

Her only escape is the perfect couple she watches through the train window daily, happy and in love, or so it appears.

IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE: A LIVE RADIO RADIO PLAY.

Need a CHEAP, DEPENDABLE sedan !!!

Submitted By: ThomasCMoore@Comcast.net – Click to email about this post
Hello, my name is Tom Moore, everyone.

I am in need of a cheap, dependable vehicle, preferably a sedan (four door car) with a 5 speed manual transmission (stick-shift).
I a homeless but working 52 year old male with no family support structure growing up.

On August 4th, 2023 at about 7:30 am I was the victim of a road-rage attack between the end of Hwy 26 and Cannon Beach.

My vehicle was totaled and, though my assailant is in jail, he had no valid insurance and I only had basic liability insurance, therefore I am left with, despite a rollover/spin in my 1993 Toyota pickup, only a dislocated left shoulder with fractures on the ball that inserts into the socket and temporarily unable to work, but have been homeless and living outside around the Clackamas River in Carver ever since my discharge from Legacy-Emanuel Hospital in Portland to avoid the many drug addicts and mentally ill on Portland’s streets.

I was working for Cannon Beach Landscaping Service before I was attacked and injured but slept in my vehicle at night between Hwy 26 and Cannon Beach off of US 101 after escaping a bad situation in the East San Francisco Bay Area of California and restarting my life in Cannon Beach, (I love the region from Tillamook to Fort Stevens but especially Hug Point to Les Shirley Park), where I was in the process of applying for an apartment in the days just before the attack, which I have fond memories of as my grandfather, Darrell Moore, used to own a business there, Cannon Beach Liquor when it was next to the American Legion Post.

I only need a CHEAP DEPENDABLE vehicle that I can get the title to, register and insure to continue my little dream and get back to work once my doctor clears me for it. I am unable to work until at least September due to my injury but wish to get back to Cannon Beach as soon as possible.

I do have an Oregon State driver’s license and a clean driving and criminal record

My cell number is 925-550-5248 and my email address is ThomasCMoore@Comcast.net

Thank you for time and consideration.

Thomas C Moore

JUST SAYING GENERAL INTEREST

Submitted By: tevisdiii@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
Co2 in simple graphics.

Just saying, do not confuse Co2 with pollution.
Reasons for pollution range from vested interests in outdated means of energy production i.e., coal, oil, wood, wind, solar panels, hydro, unstable nuclear, to poor regulations, political gamesmanship, waging wars and denying equal shares in the global village, none of which will alter climate the least of which is Co2. Be very wary of any policies rammed through legislatures to ‘combat’ global warming.
