i’m responding to jett keyser’s post on last nights BBQ.

i’d sure like to see some of this embodied in the folks who are publicly denouncing and defaming the members of manzanita’s city council.

geez lawheez, give them a break! they are volunteers with nothing to gain from voting yes or no on any agenda item.

To Live Our Own Lives
To live our own lives, not having to attack or defend,

knowing how each of us can give to others, to our family,
to strangers, to this earth, to beings we shall never see.

As we listen to many voices and changing representation,
we recognize that it is in the independent expression
of our own choices and values that we realize our freedom, live our own lives.

And it is heartening to see each meal train
appear, how we share our seeds, restore and repurpose a grange, protect a library, realize we are not alone, stronger together.

Regardless of what is driving the media ratings,
we can give support to the children in Ukraine, Gaza, Nehalem.

We can always ease up to live our own lives with compassion.

9am-Noon: Orientation, Noon-2pm: Catered Lunch Social and Activity Demos
RSVP Using This Link

This training will include an orientation for new STEAM Coach Volunteers in the morning, followed by an optional catered lunch social and hands-on demonstrations of upcoming field trip activities. What is the TC STEAM Partnership?
Across the county, a partnership of 20 local organizations works together to provide a variety of STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, mathematics) programs to Tillamook County K-12 students. Together, this partnership offers students numerous experiential education programs, including environmental science field trips, farm-to-table school gardens, science fairs, cultural programming, research projects, professional development, and more. Each year, thousands of Tillamook County students participate in these programs, which are made possible by volunteer STEAM Coaches. In order to offer these community-enriching programs, the TC STEAM Partnership needs volunteer STEAM Coaches to fulfill a variety of roles. STEAM Coaches are people who believe all students should be able to learn about STEAM subjects through educational experiences that are hands-on and inquiry-based.

Local Author Known for Alaska-Themed Histories to Visit Cannon Beach Library

Submitted By: nmccarthy1276@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
Whether it’s about the history of seal hunting in the Bering Sea or the biography of a woman who accidentally triggered a gold rush in the Klondike, author Deb Vanasse’s stories explore Alaska as much as they document the people she writes about.
Vanasse will be the guest author at the Cannon Beach Library at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 20. The free event will be hybrid; her presentation will be presented in person and online, via the library’s website, www.cannonbeachlibrary.org.
The Warrenton, Oregon author spent 36 years in Alaska, where she co-founded 49 Writers, a statewide writing center offering creative writing workshops. Vanasse has written 25 books in various genres, including nonfiction, historical fiction and children’s books; most are focused on Alaska.
Her 2022 release, Roar of the Sea, was an Oregon State Book award finalist. It tells the story of the unlikely hero who fought pirates and national governments to save Alaskan fur seals from extinction.
In 2016, Vanasse published Wealth Woman, about Kate Carmack, a Tagish woman who was a key figure in the discovery that set off the Klondike gold rush.
Vanasse enjoys seeking out hidden histories, and she likes to keep readers turning pages with characters who aren’t easily forgotten.
When she isn’t buying books, drinking tea or walking her boxer dog at the beach, Vanasse also does freelance editorial work, helping authors pull together plots, develop characters, and fine-tune their voice and pacing.
Books will be available for purchase and signing.
Vanasse’s presentation is coordinated by the Cannon Beach Library’s NW Authors Series Committee, which sponsors authors monthly from September through May. The committee also sponsors the Writers Read Celebration, where residents and visitors read works based on a local theme. This year, the celebration will be on March 22; the theme is “Beach Noir.”

Nehalem Bay Garden Club upcoming meetings and volunteer opportunities

Submitted By: barbaraandchuck@nehalemtel.net – Click to email about this post

Calling all plant lovers!

The Nehalem Bay Garden Club will be 74 years young on March 1st 2024! A very active group of 32 members is keeping this vibrant group going and the Club is always open to new members. So if gardening is in your blood, or an interest that you would like to explore, please consider checking them out. The Club is especially seeking help with its annual Plant Sale in May. No gardening experience is required, only an interest in learning and community service programs. More info about the sale below.

The current mission of Nehalem Bay Garden Club is “To cultivate knowledge and love of gardening through educational programs and activities; to aid in the protection of the environment, native plants and wildlife; and to support public service through garden related organizations and volunteer opportunities.” The Club Objective from the 1978/79 yearbook was “To stimulate the knowledge and love for gardening, to aid in the protection of native trees, plants and birds.” So the legacy continues.

The Club meets most months on the 4th Tuesday at 1:30 at the Calvary Bible Church in Manzanita across from the library. Membership is not required to attend meetings and all are welcome. For those interested in becoming a member it only requires paying the $10 annual dues.

Here are some of our upcoming meeting topics. We hope you will join us.

January 23rd the topic is plant propagation. Often there is a formal speaker, which is not the case this month. At this meeting we are holding a round table discussion about gardeners’ experiences with various methods of propagation. Anyone attending the meeting is encouraged to contribute their knowledge, experience or questions. Also planned are short videos on the subject.

February 27th features a local favorite speaker at 1:30. Ketzel Levine will present “Strategies for Thirsty Plants: Some Just Gotta Go”
After six years as director of the Hoffman’s Wonder Garden, Ketzel is ready to trade in quite a few beloved but thirsty plants for those that have particular super powers: a tolerance for winter wet and summer dry. Her presentation will offer us a look at what’s in and what’s out this coming year in the Wonder Garden.

March is the Club’s annual birthday potluck with date, time and place to be determined so look for information closer to March about details.

Nehalem Bay Garden Club’s big project is an annual plant sale the weekend of Mother’s Day. This year it will be May 11th and 12th at the same location as the past few years at the junction of N Fork Road and Highway 53 in Nehalem. Please save the date!

Proceeds from the annual plant sale are given to local organizations that meet the mission of the Club. We have been donating to the community for over 20 years. Since 2020 alone the Club has awarded grants totaling $12,300. Grant recipients include Alder Creek Farm, Food Roots, Hoffman Garden, Tillamook Early Learning Center, and Wheeler Waterfront Park. During the pandemic we wanted to help with food security and included Nehalem Bay United Methodist Church for their Senior Lunches and Food Pantry and North County Food Bank.

The months leading up to the sale, starting in February, are busy ones mainly starting seeds and potting up plants. Since many hands make light work, anyone interested in helping is very welcome. The Club meets most Tuesdays at the sale site, getting hands dirty and laughing a lot as the work is done. Please email barbaraandchuck@nehalemtel.net if you would like to know more about these work/play parties or about the Garden Club.

The 1978/79 yearbook also had a Conservation Pledge.
“I give my
Pledge as an American to save
And Faithfully to defend from Waste the natural resources of
My Country – its Forests, Waters
And Wildlife.”

Words to live by in 2024.

Old pumpkins wanted!

Submitted By: morematt@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
Hello Neighbors!

do you have some pumpkins or squash decorating your front porch or yard? I can happily take those off of your hands before they turn into the usual gooey puddle. After that chilly ice storm, it really won’t be long before those pumpkins start to merge with the earth they came from. if you want them out of there, let me know and I will whisk them away to our birds and animals who will appreciate them VERY much. None will go to waste.

Email/txt/call if you want those delicious ticking time bombs outta there and give them a proper send-off.

May everybody in BBQ-land be well and warm.

Thanks,

matt 503-277-044seven

Thank you, Randy Kugler, for calling out the lies and corruption in the Manzanita City government. Obviously, it doesn’t matter whether the corruption is big government, ie, US federal, Oregon State, or tiny, small town communities. I guess people have to feel powerful, no matter what. Certainly says a lot about their own insecurities, which of course they will never admit. Anyway, thank you so much! I appreciate you!

Quilting Demo with Becky DeVries-Wong

Submitted By: info@cannonbeacharts.org – Click to email about this post
In the realm of fine art, quilts have become increasingly recognized and celebrated for their artistic merit. Modern quilters, drawing inspiration from diverse sources such as nature, architecture, and even abstract concepts, continue to push boundaries and challenge our perceptions of what quilting can be.

Be prepared to be captivated by the craftsmanship, creativity, and sheer beauty emanating from the quilts of Becky deVries-Wong, Ken Fox, Joshua Pickens, Laurie Caplan, Patti McGregor, and Chris Pavlock during our “Quilted Together” exhibition.

On View: Jan 19 – Feb 19th, 2024
Reception: Jan 19th from 4:30 to 6:30

DEMONSTRATION: Jan 19th, starting at 4:30pm, During the Opening Reception.

In the world of quilting there are a wide variety of techniques used to create the many styles. Becky, will be demonstrating a few of the hand techniques that have been used in vintage quilts and are gaining popularity again. She will have a few samples of each technique to view as well as showing you how they are created.

English Paper Piecing : Sometimes referred to asd EPP, is a form of quilt making that uses paper templates to wrap fabric around and hand sew into a mosaic style of design. It’s a great method for fussy cutting fabric and highlighting a motif or design from fabric.

Stamped Quilt Piecing: Rubber stamps to provide more precision to making your quilt templates. Rubber stamp templates have both a cutting and a sewing line for accuracy . Most sewn together by hand. Some do use machines to sew some together. Similar to EPP, but no paper needed.

Hand Applique : Applique is ornamental needlework in which pieces or patches of fabric are sewn onto a larger background fabric to create a picture or design. Creating motifs and designs from layers of fabric. There are many ways to produce applique by hand or machine depending on the desired effect.

Broderie Perse: Popular in the late 18th century it is French for Persian Embroidery. A technique where elements , such as flowers, birds, animals….are cut from fabric and applique onto another background.
