Doing Good in Evil Times

Submitted By: dixiegainer@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
In a recent (March 5th) Headlight Herald article, the title proclaimed that Senators Who “Walked Out” Were Not Protected From “Consequences”. The title of this article should be “Doing Good in Evil Times Is not Always Rewarding.” The Senators they are talking about tried to stop a bill that gives the state the right to determine what sex your child should be. Yes it does, and the bill states that if the parents interfere, they will be considered by this law to be child abusers, and their child will be removed from them and placed in foster care. This has been happening already in other states, due to the same type of legislation passed in that state. In other words this is a “globalist” bill.

If you have children under the age of 15 – actually the law says from birth to 15, their reproductive organs are under the jurisdiction of the state of Oregon. This bill HB 2002 – does that, it gives the state jurisdiction over your child’s reproductive hormones and organs. I can think of no law more egregious than this. And yet because of the deception of the media, the hysteria of Republicans, and Democrats too, crying abortion, abortion, and abortion- the real purpose of this bill was blurred. (this bill was and is not about abortion, abortion is allowed in our constitution, from age 15) it is about the state, not the parent, being in control of your child’s sexual orientation and reproductive body parts. Abortion is a part of that but it is already legal for age 15 and up.
So the Senators that put their job on the line for you and your children were told they could not run in the next election.
They did take their case to the courts and the Supreme Court, hand picked by the last two Democratic governors, ruled that measure 113 passed by 68% of people, will stand and therefore those that tried to stop this wrongful legislation by trying to prevent a quorum cannot run again. So who is protecting you now dear voter?

Measure 113 —changed the constitution – did you know that? It punishes people who try to prevent a quorum. And preventing a quorum is legal. Democrats have used this tactic also.
Measure 113 as written made you think that there were some lazy legislators who just didn’t bother to show up for work too many times and therefore should not be allowed to run again. Is that why you voted for it? Watch out for bills in the future, most of them are written so you don’t know what they mean.

Oregon Measure 113 -The exclusion from Re-election for Legislative Absenteeism initiative. A “yes” vote supported disqualifying legislators from re-election following the end of their term if they are absent from 10 legislative floor sessions without permission or excuse. This was approved by voters Nov. 8 2022. The Democrats, if they did this would be excused and given permission (as the majority)because there is no definition of what a valid excuse would be, or what would be permitted.

Submitted By: nmccarthy1276@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
Join the Coaster Theatre Playhouse and the Cannon Beach Library March 23 and 24 as they host Rob Urbinati, NYC-based playwright, for an illuminating weekend of events in celebration of his much-produced play, “Death by Design.”
Aspiring playwrights can attend a free event at the Cannon Beach Library, from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday, March 23 when Urbinati will discuss the craft of playwriting, with a focus on coming up with ideas for plays, adapting for the stage from other sources, and getting started as a playwright by writing a 10-minute play. This event is open to anyone interested in theatre – artists and audiences alike.
Those attending the matinee of “Death by Design” at the Coaster Theatre at 3 p.m. March 24 can join a post-show talk with Urbinati and the play’s director, Deanna Duplechain who will discuss the play, its origins and current production. This is a reunion 25 years in the making for Urbinati and Duplechain, who met in New York City.
Urbinati wrote “Death by Design,” a hilarious mystery and a mash-up of Agatha Christie and Noel Coward. When the play found its way through the play Coaster Theatre’s selection team and landed on Duplechain’s lap for directorial consideration at the theatre, Duplechain said, “Hey, I know this guy.”
After a flurry of emails, Urbinati agreed to be in residence in Cannon Beach to complement the second weekend of “Death by Design” at the Coaster Theatre.
Rob Urbinati’s published plays include “Hazelwood Jr. High”; “Murder On West Moon Street”; “Mama’s Boy”; and “Jane Austen’s Lady Susan,” published by Samuel French/Concord, as well as “Cole Porter’s Nymph Errant,” published by Broadway Licensing; and “Miss Julie In Hollywood,” co-written with Mario Garza Jr., published by Next Stage Press. His plays have received over 300 productions world-wide.
His book, “Play Readings: A Complete Guide for Theatre Practitioners,” is published by Routledge Press.
Urbinati has directed for Classic Stage Company; Abingdon Theatre; Lincoln Center Directors Lab; Culture Project; Cherry Lane Theatre; York Theatre; Pearl Theatre Company; and Public Theater in New York City, as well as theatres and universities across the country. He is director of New Play Development at Queens Theatre and a member of the Dramatists Guild.

Artist Lecture and Workshop at the Hoffman Center for the Arts in Manzanita

Submitted By: visualarts@hoffmanarts.org – Click to email about this post
Comprising sixty to seventy percent of the human body, water stands as an elemental essence at the very core of our existence.

Join March gallery artist and explorer Keri Rosebraugh for a Friday evening lecture and on Saturday for a unique workshop exploring our precious resource called water: our connection with it, the mystical aspects of it, and how we can collaborate with it in our own artwork.

On Friday, March 29, 2024, from 5:00 to 6:30 pm, Rosebraugh will share her personal journey and fascination with water and its intrinsic connection to our lives. The conversation will touch upon the “Theory of the Sublime” as manifested in nature as well as how Rosebraugh integrates water into her artistic practice.

On Saturday, March 30, 2024, from 10: am to 5:00 pm, Rosebraugh will direct students as they begin the day with group activities involving water and will work together to create a large medicine water wheel outside to energize, celebrate, and honor water. Weather permitting, we will utilize the ocean tide and combine salt water and sand with our own interpretations of water on paper.

The afternoon will entail creating Cyanotype prints, which is a photographic printing process that produces blue prints using coated paper and light. We will then soak the prints in water to complete our images. Using objects from nature found near the Hoffman Center for the Arts, we will form various shapes and shadows in our prints. This workshop emphasizes experimentation, investigation, and the discovery of how water plays an important role in our lives.

Full and partial scholarships are available. For more information and registration visit: hoffmanarts.org/

Fictional Soap Opera – Episode 4

The Tides of Manzanita – The Alliance

In the coastal haven of Manzanita, where secrets are as common as the shifting sands, the drama deepens. The quaint beach town, still reeling from the revelations of previous episodes, finds itself on the cusp of a storm that promises to shake its very foundations.

The episode opens at dawn, with the serene waves washing over the beach, a stark contrast to the turmoil brewing within Manzanita. Victoria, the intrepid reporter known for her sharp wit and unwavering determination to uncover the truth, finds herself at The Cove, the epicenter of the town’s clandestine activities. It’s here, amidst the lingering aroma of coffee and sea salt, that she encounters Ruby, the observant waitress whose silent vigil over the council’s secret meeting had revealed the depth of their deceit.

Their meeting is not by design rather than chance, a calculated decision by Victoria, who recognized the value of Ruby’s potential inside knowledge from meetings at The Cove. Ruby, initially wary, finds a kindred spirit in Victoria—a fellow warrior in the battle for truth. Their conversation, hushed and urgent, is a dance of shared secrets and mutual respect. They speak of the council’s plot to bury the damning report, of the $160,000 legal fee that continues to climb, and of their resolve to bring the council’s lies to light.

As their alliance is forged, Ruby mentions her friend Shirley, a clerk at the city hall with a penchant for justice and a heart burdened by the secrets she has been forced to keep. Shirley, disillusioned by the council’s manipulations and fearful of the consequences, had long sought a way to make amends.

The trio convenes under the cloak of twilight at the nearby Nehalem dock, a secluded spot. With the gently flowing Nehalem River in the background, witness to centuries of the history of the North Coast, they pledge to work together to expose the council’s corruption. Shirley, the final piece of their puzzle, reveals she has access to the elusive investigation report—the key to unraveling the web of lies spun by the council.

“Can you really get it without being found out?” asked Victoria.

“It’s difficult to access and not on my computer. I’ll need a password and passwords change,” Shirley replied. “But staff often writes passwords on their station so they don’t forget.”

“Quite a security system!” Victoria interjected.

“If I can get access,” said Shirley, “I can download the report to one of my son’s thumb drives. Big question is when to make my move – early, lunch break or end of the day.”

Their plan is daring and fraught with risk. Victoria will use her platform to bring the story to the public, armed with any evidence Shirley can provide. Ruby, with her unparalleled access to the town’s power players, will keep her ear to the ground, gathering intelligence and alerting her allies to any responses by the council. Shirley, meanwhile, will navigate the treacherous waters of city hall, secretly securing the report and any further evidence of the council’s misdeeds.

As Episode 4 draws to a close, the trio’s resolve is tested. A mysterious figure, cloaked in the shadows of Nehalem’s storefronts, watches their meeting with keen interest, recording a video of the meeting. “Who’s that? Don’t look.” whispers Victoria, glancing over Ruby’s shoulder. “Looks like somebody is following us. We need to be extra careful.”

The stakes are higher than ever, and the battle lines are drawn. With the town as their backdrop, Victoria, Ruby, and Shirley embark on a journey that promises to bring the truth to light and restore the integrity of their beloved Manzanita.

As the tide rolls in, so too does the promise of justice. The alliance, once formed in the shadows, now stands as a beacon of hope for Manzanita. Can they obtain and reveal the report? What are the risks for each of them? Who is following them? The episode ends with the mysterious onlooker disappearing into the shadows, leaving viewers on the edge of their seats, wondering, eagerly anticipating the next episode of “The Tides of Manzanita.”

Club Manzanita Oops! UPDATE

Submitted By: rkinor@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
The Council held their first reading of an Ordinance to change our water billings from the current quarterly period to a monthly reading and billing on March 6th. This action is being taken to correct the oversight of the City Manager to inform the Council of the need to amend the Ordinance seven months ago when the new water rates went into effect. The effect of this error is that the City has been billing us monthly without any Ordinance authority to do so.
Eight citizens took the time to submit written testimony at the meeting opposing the change. No citizen testimony in favor of the change was submitted.

Councilor Hart took the lead with his story of a part time neighbor who developed a leak in the water line going to her house that she was unaware of. Councilor Hart claimed that monthly readings allowed for the discovery of the leak and saved her from a potential $1,200 water bill had the leak gone undetected for three months. In cases like this, once the property owner is advised of the leak and repairs it, they are given a leak credit by the City so that they are not unfairly charged for a situation that they had no knowledge of. In the future during your discussions, please give all the facts not just those that create the story you want citizens to hear to support your positions on a particular issue.
The City’s messaging on this issue continues to be confusing, contradictory and condescending. Listening to the City Manager’s explanation of how your meter records monthly usage confirms that the City only has a vague idea of how much water you use each month. The City can neither tell you how many actual gallons you use each month nor how many gallons in excess of your 2,000 gallon base allotment you used.
Homeowners are told  that we need to conserve water and learn to get by with half of the 4,000 gallons per month that we once had in our base billing. Meanwhile the City confirms to developers of subdivisions, commercial businesses and the new hotel on Dorcus Lane that we have plenty of water for their developments.
The City acknowledges that monthly billings are more costly but are unable to tell us how much additional expense is involved. They are however confident that through their assistance with this change, monthly billings will allow each of us to better manage our personal expenses and household finances.

How many of you in any given quarter are gone from your residence on a vacation or take trips to see family or friends? During the quarter in question for that time you are gone, your meter is not turning thus increasing your odds that your total quarterly bill may show that you only used the base amount of 6,000 gallons for the quarter. You just saved yourself from paying one or more $9.50  monthly surcharges that resulted from a monthly read of your meter that found that you exceeded 2,000 gallons. When you compare a monthly utility billing rate structure that includes a surcharge component with the same rate structure with a quarterly meter read, a quarterly billing always favors the customer from a cost of service standpoint.
This is the classic government response of creating a solution that is  in search of a problem. Why is the City so insistent to push this through?
The Council has the opportunity at their April meeting to announce that they will not pursue this Ordinance amendment and retain quarterly billings.

Should Council pass this Ordinance, I will initiate the referendum process to ensure that there will be an election scheduled at the next available election date to consider the repeal of this Ordinance and return to quarterly meter reading and billing. In short, Manzanita voters, not the Council, will decide the matter. We have not had an opportunity for a direct vote on any important City decision since the failed City Hall Bond measure in 2019. I imagine that voters would welcome the opportunity to again cast a vote on an issue that affects their pocketbook.
Let your Council hear from you before their April 3rdmeeting and ask them to explain how this change is in your best interests. citycouncil@ci.manzanita.or.us
