More FREE Japanese Maple volunteer seedlings

Submitted By: babbles@nehalemtel.net – Click to email about this post
half a dozen people have come to my hillside to dig japanese maple volunteer seedlings. you can barely see that any are gone.

they are sprouting up alongside and between the stone steps going down into my garden. they are tiny, two- and four-leaf. by the time you get here, some might be 6-leaf.

there are 1000’s !!!!

these are from green japanese maple trees, and they are not laceleaf. i don’t know the variety. i bought one when i first moved to this location 27 years ago. since then i planted seedlings from the japanese maple trees at U.S. Bank in manzanita. so these are likely a cross.

they have grown to their mature size of 15-20 feet tall on my north-facing hillside. in full sun they likely wouldn’t grow that tall.

they turn amber/russet colors in the fall, more vibrant with colder autumns, less colorful with milder autumns.

A Different Take on the Nehalem Bay Garden Club Plant Sale May 11 and 12

Submitted By: barbaraandchuck@nehalemtel.net – Click to email about this post
The Nehalem Bay Garden Club which is 74 years young, has been holding its annual plant sale for about 40 years!

This year’s sale is coming right up—Mother’s Day weekend, Saturday, May 11th from 10-3 and Sunday, May 12th from 10 to noon. Location of the sale is 43080 North Fork Rd, Nehalem at the junction of Hwy 53 and North Fork Rd.

One reason we hold the sale is because we love plants and want to share them. Another big reason is that the Club is passionate about providing plants to locals at reasonable prices in a location close to home.

And for almost 25 years we have been distributing the profits from the sale back into our community to organizations that meet our mission. Since 2020 alone the Club has awarded grants totaling $12,300. Grant recipients include Alder Creek Farm, Food Roots, Hoffman Garden, Tillamook Early Learning Center, and Wheeler Waterfront Park. During the pandemic we wanted to help with food security and included Nehalem Bay United Methodist Church for their Senior Lunches and Food Pantry and North County Food Bank.

So come get some affordable plants without driving too far and help send your hard earned dollars back into our community.

Features of the sale include:

All kinds of plants: hanging baskets, planters with colorful flowers, perennials, annuals, vegetables, tomatoes, shrubs, trees, and houseplants among others.

Mother’s Day gifts

Raffle
Raffle items are a garden statue of a little girl with a book (value $56), a hearty outdoor palm tree (value $100), and a basket of garden goodies that includes a hori hori knife, books, clippers, canister of wildflower seeds and gloves (value $90). Raffle tickets are $5 each or 6 for $20.

Kid’s activity on Saturday only
While you shop they can create wee succulent gardens as commitments to Planet Earth — and possibly Mothers’ Day gifts. All materials provided.

And while you are in the neighborhood, Aldervale Native Plants is having an open house on Saturday, May 11th from 9-4 across the road from the Garden Club sale. 43005 North Fork Rd.

At my absolute lowest- this made all the difference

Happy Beltane! I have 2 spots left for this Saturday’s May, 4th Beltane Retreat (Loving the Body- Transforming Shame)

www.northfork53.com/events/beltane-retreat

The goal of this retreat isn’t to get rid of shame.
It isn’t to be a better version of yourself.
It isn’t even to be happier.

I woke up in a terrible mood this morning.

I didn’t want to write this or be “productive.”
I didn’t even want be unproductive!
Everything just felt annoying and hard.

So made myself tea and let myself journal all the restless and stuck thoughts.

I could sense grief and anger in there.
And a strong unwillingness to “figure it out.”

So I used something that always helps when I’m feeling this way.

It’s the last thing my bad mood expects me to do.
Instead of trying to fix or change it, I lean in and..

I light a candle to the terrible mood.
Sit in the holy temple of shame.
Call irritation my guru.

I don’t try to make myself feel better.

I make whatever I am feeling, sacred.

I surprise people when I stay I’m proud of my divorce.
In fact- I’m more proud of it than anything I’ve ever done.

That’s not because it was easy or that I was able to stay on task or give myself a glow up.

It’s simply because I didn’t allow shame to take it over.
I didn’t shame myself and I didn’t shame him.

I also didn’t shame my grief, my anger or my fear.

I was able to let these emotions move through me.

I let myself cry and collapse and feel lost. I let weeds take over my garden and let lots of obligations drop.

It was one of the greatest gifts I have ever given myself and I’m proud of it because pride naturally exists where shame is absent.

I accomplished this by making the hardest thing I’ve ever done- the most SACRED thing.

Shame can’t enter the places you hold sacred.

When you make something sacred you move it from the shadows and shine a light on it.
You imbue it with the power to transform mundane reality.
You acknowledge that pain and suffering is a part of your connection to life.
You surrender the need to control and make it better
You declare that (no matter how broken you may feel) this too is a part of your magical journey.

To make shame sacred is to transform it.

This is a massive shift in a culture that has used shame for centuries to punish, oppress and keep us disconnected.

If this feels inspiring then come this Saturday for the retreat 11am-3pm
Get your tickets here
www.northfork53.com/events/beltane-retreat

This Beltane I hope you welcome all parts of you (especially the shamed ones) as sacred and enjoy more of whatever gives you pleasure!

Modern-era clinical trials show psilocybin-assisted therapy brings “immediate, substantial and sustained” relief from anxiety and depression in patients with advanced cancer. Palliative care providers are eager to add a new palliative care tool to their toolbox to address non-physical suffering. This presentation will briefly review the trials and findings, the prohibited status of psilocybin under current law, and efforts to evolve the law to allow access for therapeutic purposes. The discussion will include Oregon’s pioneering Psilocybin Services Act, the first state law to legalize and regulate this substance despite its federal status.

As Robert Frost put it, “the best way out is always through”. And as John Green wrote in The Anthropocene Reviewed, “And the only good way through is together. Even when circumstances separate us – in fact, especially when they do – the way through is together.”

So whatever place you may find yourself in or whatever struggle you are encountering, these questions can be a transformative way through together.

Wherever you find yourself, these questions are designed to help you uncover, recover, and discover more of who you truly are.

Fictional Soap Opera – Episode 10 – Afterward

Submitted By: Wstone1991@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
In “The Tides of Manzanita,” Episode 10 titled “Afterward”, the sweeping currents of change and revelation reach their climax, bringing closure and new beginnings to the picturesque coastal town. As secrets are unveiled and the truth comes to light, the episode ties up loose ends and sets the stage for the next soap opera season in Manzanita’s storied history.

The episode opens with Victoria, Ruby, and Shirley, now in possession of the suppressed investigative report. Victoria, ever the diligent journalist, begins the careful process of disseminating the information. She opts for a measured approach, posting excerpts on the community Facebook page and North Coast BBQ bulletin board using generic language to describe the various disputes and accusations detailed in the report. Her posts reveal the city manager’s frequent clashes with the former mayor and other city employees, attributed to a problematic anger management issue.

As Victoria’s revelations ripple through Manzanita, the council is forced to confront the fallout. It is disclosed that the councilors, led by Councilor Jed, had hired a management consultant and psychologist to address the city manager’s temperament issues. These consulting expenditures, hidden from public view, had significantly contributed to the legal and investigative costs that the report included.

Victoria’s commentary strikes a chord with the community. She points out that much of the fervor surrounding the city manager’s actions could have been mitigated had the council been more transparent about the report’s findings. Unfortunately, Councilor Jed, who had spearheaded the decision to hire the city manager, found himself unable to admit to these failings publicly. The city manager did nothing to dissuade the councilor to protect his own image. The threat of further legal action by the manager was always an unspoken intimidating possibility.

The suppressed report becomes a pivotal issue in the next election cycle. Feeling the weight of public scrutiny and loss of influence, Councilor Jed opts for retirement, stepping away from the limelight and the controversies that marred his final days in office. Councilor Bart, too, decides not to run for re-election, recognizing that without Jed, his power and influence have waned.

These actions identified a weakness in the city charter during this interim period when there were no elected representatives on council, only appointed members.

The elections usher in a new era for Manzanita. The newly elected council pledges greater transparency and a commitment to prioritize the citizens’ interests over their own. This shift in governance leads to the eventual departure of the city manager, who resigns after realizing the loss of his main supporter, Jed. Armed with the council’s best departure wishes and severance package, the manager opted to open a less stressful retail florist shop. His successor is noted for a more even temperament, promising a smoother interaction with both the council and the community.

As Manzanita turns the page on this tumultuous chapter, life begins to settle into a new normal. Ruby returns to her duties at The Cove, her ear always tuned to the undercurrents of comments by the city’s power structure. Shirley, finding peace away from the stresses of city hall, secures a happier, less stressful job elsewhere. Victoria, recognized for her courageous journalism, is honored with a state independent journalism award, cementing her role as a pivotal figure in bringing truth to light.

Episode 10, “Afterword,” not only provides closure to the conflicts that have rocked Manzanita but also sets a hopeful tone for the future. As the daily cycle of the tides continues, the town looks forward to a period of stability and renewed trust in its leaders. One chapter closes, and another begins, with the citizens of Manzanita ready to face whatever challenges and changes come their way. Stay tuned for the next season of the North Coast’s favorite soap opera, The Tides of Manzanita.
