A $10 entry fee gets you into the derby. All entry tickets proceeds and proceeds from the raffles and silent auction will go to our local charities: the MuddNick Foundation and Animal Haven by the Sea. SO COME OUT AND SUPPORT OUR LOCAL COMMUNITY!
We will have games, crafts, and contests going throughout the day. We have amazing vendors lined up including Debbie the Olive Lady, Soap Succulents, Sugar + Air (cotton candy), Airbrush Face Painting, and Coastal Ink. Seaside Aquarium will be here too with some cute sea life to touch! The band “Uncle Jerry” will end this amazing day, performing at 6pm!!

Got the word from Alligator this morning!!! “The Hits Keep Coming” has debuted on the Billboard Blues Chart AT NUMBER 1

Rick Estrin and the Nightcats will be in town on June 23rd at NCRD for a very special show. Members of the Neahkahnie High School choir will open the show with a brief set at 3pm.

Award-winning, modern blues legends, Rick Estrin & The Nightcats – two-time winners of the prestigious Blues Music Award for Band Of The Year – currently celebrating the release of their long-awaited new Alligator Records album, The Hits Keep Coming, will perform as part of the Benefit for the new Nehalem Bay Health Center at the NCRD Performing Arts Center in Nehalem on Sunday, June 23, 2024. The Hits Keep Coming, the band’s first release in almost five years and sixth overall, packs a powerful punch, with phenomenal musicianship and streetwise lyrics—both serious and humorous. Vocalist, harmonica master and songwriter Estrin, along with multi-instrumentalist/musical mastermind/producer Christoffer “Kid” Andersen, keyboardist/organ wizard/bass player Lorenzo Farrell and endlessly creative drummer Derrick “D’Mar” Martin, have created what Estrin calls, “the best music we’ve ever made together. This band is killer. I’m enjoying this all more than ever,” says the man who’s been performing and recording professionally since the early 1970s. “It’s a blessing—there’s so much energy, so much collaboration. The band is just so good right now. And the live show is off the charts.”

This coming Thursday, May 30, at 6:30 p.m., North Coast Communities for Watershed Protection will be holding another of its regular “last Thursday of the month” grassroots, public meetings at the St. Mary by the Sea Parish Hall; 275 S. Pacific St.; Rockaway Beach, Oregon. This meeting is open to all those interested in the proposed acquisition of the Jetty Creek Watershed by the City of Rockaway Beach. That watershed is the sole source of surface drinking water for Rockaway Beach. To provide citizen input, the City has formed the Source Water Protection Plan Development Advisory Committee, composed of five people who drink the water from Jetty Creek. Though not part of the SWPPDAC, NCCWP hopes to help shape the discussion by providing constructive feedback to the committee members, as well as making clear what are our goals for the acquisition of the watershed.
Everyone who drinks the water from Jetty Creek, as well as everyone else concerned about protecting watersheds that provide their drinking water, is invited and encouraged to attend. Thanks to everyone who attended the meeting last month. This month, one of the subjects that will be addressed is landslides. There will be a short training session on the use of the State of Oregon SLIDO maps. (SLIDO is an acronym for Statewide Landslide Information Database for Oregon.)
Here are some other topics that may be addressed at the meeting: (1) What questions should communities be asking about their drinking water sources and how they are managed?; (2) What concerns may there be regarding surface water sources, such as Jetty Creek, and well water sources, such as the wells the City uses under the Nedonna Beach neighborhood?
Everyone has a right to abundant clean and safe drinking water. This is a basic human right. Please join us this Thursday, May 30, at St. Mary by the Sea to learn about, and discuss, these important issues. (This will be an “in-person”meeting, but it will also be available on Zoom for those unable to attend.)

Manzanita, OR – Get birdy over Memorial Day Weekend! The LNCT invites you and your family to Alder Creek Farm from 10am to 2pm this Sunday, May 26th for a Migratory Bird Day Celebration. Explore this year’s global theme, ‘Protect Insects, Protect Birds,’ in our stretch of the Pacific Flyway.

Did you know that 96% of North American bird species rely on insects while 40% of the world’s insect populations are declining? Join us and many fantastic local conservation, education, and wildlife rehabilitation organizations including Wildlife Center of the North Coast, State Parks, OSU Extension, and more to see the magic of migration and learn how you can support birds, bugs, and blooms in your garden and beyond.

Get to know your local birds on a guided bird walk, take a tour through the Nehalem Teaching Trail to learn about insect-loving native plants, and peek through the spotting scope to catch a glimpse of the birds found on Alder Creek or those stopping by during their migration at the ‘Big Sit’ station with the Bird Alliance of Oregon. Kids will also enjoy getting creative with an art activity hosted by the Hoffman Center for the Arts.

Bring your sack lunch and sit down with ‘Bird Nerd’ podcast team Hannah and Erik for a Brown Bag workshop on how to use eBird and iNaturalist apps and contribute to community science! June 8, 1:00-5:00pm, Somatic Art Exploration – An Invitation for Intuitive Art Making with Jenny Siegel
Join Instructor Jenny Siegel as she guides students through the process of intuitive art making. The afternoon will begin with gentle somatic movement. This will be done standing and sitting in a chair. This offers an opportunity to release body tension and experience a felt-sense of spaciousness. This exploration supports us in connecting with our innate creative impulses. Students will then explore with color, mark-making, and a variety of mediums, carrying a creative thread from the somatic movement practice. Art materials, guidance, space to play, and snacks will be provided. All levels of experience are welcome. Students are asked to bring their own blanket and pillow.

June 14–16 | 10:00am-5:00pm, Wax Praxis: An Encaustic workshop with Robert Procter
oin artist Robert Procter to learn the fundamentals of painting with hot wax, referred to as encaustic painting, one of the oldest painting methods known. The oldest surviving encaustic panel paintings are from the Romano-Egyptian Fayum mummy portraits from Egypt around 200–400 AD. In Greece the encaustic method was used to create portraits of the deceased and, practically, to help seal their fishing boats. Students will begin by learning the basics of equipment and materials, safety, and panel preparation. We will then progress to a host of approaches, including making lines, using stencils, embedding fabric, and transferring laser print images. Additional topics will include combining encaustic with oil, as well as delving into the magic of combining alcohol, India inks, and shellac.

Mats will not be provided. Please bring a beach towel to practice on and anything else that you need to sit comfortably on the sand. Please dress in layers. Class is weather dependent. Studio may be an option for class.
