Writers to Celebrate the Rising Tide in Stories, Poems at Library Event

Submitted By: nmccarthy1276@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
A rising tide lifts all boats, but for 13 writers who will participate in the Writers Read Celebration at the Cannon Beach Library on March 7, a rising tide is the theme flowing through their stories and poems.

From shipwrecks to wrack lines, the pieces to be read by Oregon, Washington and Canadian writers explore the meanings and metaphors of “rising tide,” this year’s theme for the library’s annual writing project.

The seventh annual Writers Read Celebration will begin at 7 p.m.; admission is free. People can attend in person at the library, 131 Hemlock St., or online; the link will be on the library’s website, cannonbeachlibrary.org.

Fifteen pieces to be read include stories, poems and haikus. Topics include a woman who lifts a whale off the beach, flowers floating from Ukraine, a body to be buried, a morning and evening spent at Haystack Rock and a nod to political currents.

This is the seventh year that the library’s NW Authors Series Committee asked writers from everywhere to submit works on a specific theme. Writers could submit up to three entries in any format limited to 600 words per entry.

Of the 85 entries, the committee, after a blind reading, selected 15 pieces to be read by 13 writers. One of those writers is from Alberta, Canada.

Those invited to read this year were:
John Ciminello, Naselle, WA, poem: King Tides at Cape Disappointment
Deanna Duplechain, Seaside, OR, short story: Seeing Saturday
Christie Ellis, Astoria, flash fiction: All at Sea
Kristi Lund, Nehalem, OR, poem: Heeding the Tide
Mimi Maduro, Cape Meares, OR, haiku, Three Haiku
Colleen Medlock, Portland/Seaside, OR, flash fictions: Shifting Tides and A Light in a Storm
Russell Myers, Vancouver, WA, flash fiction: The Body
Jennifer Nightingale, Astoria, OR, poems: She Knows the Tide is Rising and Gifts from the Wrack Line
Grace Page, Red Deer, Alberta, Canada, poem: An Evening Walk to Haystack
Robert Michael Pyle, Gray’s River, WA, poem: All Boats Rise
Florence Sage, Astoria, OR, poem: But Never Mind
Phyllis Thompson, Manzanita, OR, poem: The Tides
Evan Morgan Williams, Portland, OR, flash fiction: The Great Black Shape

About the new Health Center and Pharmacy
• The new Nehalem Bay Health Center and Pharmacy is a project of the Nehalem Bay Health District, an Oregon special district that has existed since the early 1950’s. The
District also owns the Nehalem Valley Care Center, the old Wheeler hospital and the current clinic building on Rowe Street in Wheeler.
• The decision to develop a new Health Center was driven by space limitations in the current clinic, as well as limits on the number of patients who can be served and
services that can be provided.
• The new Health Center will have 15 exam and procedure rooms, a major upgrade from the existing facility, allowing space to accommodate specialty
services, including x-ray and dental.

The North Oregon Coast Symphony continues its 2024-2025 season with two concerts in March titled “Melodic Journeys.” Designed to please audience
members of all ages, the performances will feature Greg Smith’s The Melodic Life. This piece traces the life story of a “lighthearted melody named Bob,”
illustrating events like going to school, playing sports, and other developmental experiences.
The underlying message that “variety is the
spice of life” will be demonstrated through a wide range of musical themes.
The narrator will be Deac Guidi, a local professional opera singer who has performed with NOCS and throughout the northwest region.
Another feature in the program will be Robert Smith’s Symphony No. 2, “The Odyssey.” Inspired by the ancient Greek poet Homer’s epic tale, this work takes the audience on a dazzling musical voyage. Morton Gould’s rousing American Salute will round out this concert series.
The first concert will take place on Saturday, March 15, at the Nehalem Elementary School Gym (36300 8th St., Nehalem, OR) beginning at 3:00 pm.

SORDID LIVES is a dark comedy set in a small Texas town, revolving around the eccentric Turpin family and their friends as they grapple with the sudden and embarrassing death of the family matriarch.

Peggy’s demise occurs during an illicit tryst in a seedy motel room with her younger, married neighbor, resulting in a hilariously scandalous cover-up.

As the family prepares for Peggy’s funeral, long-buried secrets and family tensions erupt, leading to a series of outrageous events.

The play satirizes small-town life, family dysfunction, and societal prejudices with a sharp wit and a deep affection for its flawed but lovable characters.

SORDID LIVES celebrates individuality and acceptance, even in the face of the most “sordid” circumstances.

It’s a raucous and heartwarming story about finding your place in a world that often tries to define you.

RATED MATURE AUDIENCES ONLY: ‘Sordid Lives’ is intended for mature audiences. The play contains comedic depictions of sensitive topics, including infidelity, mental health, LGBTQ+ issues, strong language, sexual content and innuendos, and situations not suitable for children or some younger audiences. Audience discretion is advised.

Bankruptcy

Submitted By: genedieken@yahoo.com – Click to email about this post
About a month ago Dixie Gainer assured us that Elon Musk and his Doge boys were going to take 90 days to straighten out the Federal government. I’m afraid they need to pick up the pace. The calendar now says 60 days till Elon’s miracle will appear from on high in a blaze of Crypto Glory.

But now she’s telling us “…and this is what is happening right now – getting a handle on excessive spending. that is what Trump is doing now – getting a handle on excessive spending. Thank god for that. If we go bankrupt, social security medicare, and medicaid will be dumped as America tries to become solvent again… [it’s] a Herculean task that could take decades.”

Meanwhile, GOP Reps in Congress just passed their version of a budget bill that aims to effectively eliminate Medicaid, throwing millions into pervasive insecurity while preserving trillions in tax cuts for billionaires.

Also, Ms Gainer feels that Elon deserves commendation for performing this Doge miracle for free. Free? Really? Did SpaceX just happen to bump Verizon out of their existing contract with the FFA for air traffic control modernization by chance? Nothing to see here! Move on! “Since you can’t do anything about it – watch fun stuff…”

Probably a good idea to remind yourself occasionally about Ms Gainer’s reliability by reviewing the post by BBQ’s own editors (RIP, beloved Chuck) about her allegations of tainted voter rolls in Oregon during last year’s election cycle:

Well made (sturdy) cabinet for storage. I used in the bathroom. 3 ft tall, 15 inches wide and 14.25 deep. This was a kit, but is superior to most poorly made pieces you see today. Very solid wood, frosted glass. Will require a strong man or two women to carry. $20. Pick up in Manzanita.
