Writers to Celebrate the Rising Tide in Stories, Poems at Library Event

Submitted By: nmccarthy1276@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
A rising tide lifts all boats, but for 13 writers who will participate in the Writers Read Celebration at the Cannon Beach Library on March 7, a rising tide is the theme flowing through their stories and poems.

From shipwrecks to wrack lines, the pieces to be read by Oregon, Washington and Canadian writers explore the meanings and metaphors of “rising tide,” this year’s theme for the library’s annual writing project.

The seventh annual Writers Read Celebration will begin at 7 p.m.; admission is free. People can attend in person at the library, 131 Hemlock St., or online; the link will be on the library’s website, cannonbeachlibrary.org.

Fifteen pieces to be read include stories, poems and haikus. Topics include a woman who lifts a whale off the beach, flowers floating from Ukraine, a body to be buried, a morning and evening spent at Haystack Rock and a nod to political currents.

This is the seventh year that the library’s NW Authors Series Committee asked writers from everywhere to submit works on a specific theme. Writers could submit up to three entries in any format limited to 600 words per entry.

Of the 85 entries, the committee, after a blind reading, selected 15 pieces to be read by 13 writers. One of those writers is from Alberta, Canada.

Those invited to read this year were:
John Ciminello, Naselle, WA, poem: King Tides at Cape Disappointment
Deanna Duplechain, Seaside, OR, short story: Seeing Saturday
Christie Ellis, Astoria, flash fiction: All at Sea
Kristi Lund, Nehalem, OR, poem: Heeding the Tide
Mimi Maduro, Cape Meares, OR, haiku, Three Haiku
Colleen Medlock, Portland/Seaside, OR, flash fictions: Shifting Tides and A Light in a Storm
Russell Myers, Vancouver, WA, flash fiction: The Body
Jennifer Nightingale, Astoria, OR, poems: She Knows the Tide is Rising and Gifts from the Wrack Line
Grace Page, Red Deer, Alberta, Canada, poem: An Evening Walk to Haystack
Robert Michael Pyle, Gray’s River, WA, poem: All Boats Rise
Florence Sage, Astoria, OR, poem: But Never Mind
Phyllis Thompson, Manzanita, OR, poem: The Tides
Evan Morgan Williams, Portland, OR, flash fiction: The Great Black Shape

40 letters in 40 Days; a Lenten Journey

Submitted By: lufkinali@hotmail.com – Click to email about this post
The Saint Catherine Community
invites you to join us in our Lent challenge of
writing 40 letters in 40 days.
During times of upheaval and uncertainty, it’s common for withdrawal, overwhelm and despair to set in.
Through letter-writing (to our representatives in congress, to local organizations we appreciate, to ourselves, to friends and neighbors), we allow our deepest concerns, appreciation, ‘voice’ to find their expression. During Lent, we will dig deep to find what it is we most want/need to express. We will gather at St Cats every Monday night at 5pm to nourish and support one another. We will have music, poetry, envelopes, stamps, letter samples, ideas, addresses available to support us in writing a letter a day, until Easter, to grow love in our world.

Consider joining us!!

Green Crabs in Netarts Bay: Challenges and Opportunities

Submitted By: vicky@netartsbaywebs.org – Click to email about this post
Cracking the code on green crabs; discover how these crabs are impacting local estuarine and marine species.

Saturday – April 5th, 1:00-2:30: Attnend in person at the Netarts Community Center. Or, virtualy.
Join Friends of Netarts Bay Watershed, Estuary, Beach and Sea (WEBS) and visiting scientist Dr. Sylvia Yamada at this informative presentation to learn how the green crab range expansion is impacting Netarts Bay.

These small but voracious crabs disrupt ecosystems by preying on shellfish and tearing up the eelgrass. They were first introduced to the West Coast via San Francisco Bay in the 1980s. They have since spread throughout estuaries and bays in California, Oregon, and Washington; recently reaching as far north as Alaska. Their high tolerance for a wide range of temperatures and salinity has allowed them to become a global challenge.

So how concerned should we be? Marina Dreeben, WEBS Stewardship Coordinator invites you to “join us in-person or virtually to learn about the current status of green crabs in Netarts Bay and the proposed strategies to address their impacts.” She goes on to say, “Native shellfish, along with countless other species, are under threat due to the presence of green crabs.”

And what can we do about it? Join the conversation as we tackle these questions with expert visiting scientist, Dr. Sylvia Yamada. With degrees from the University of British Columbia and the University of Oregon, she is a leading voice on the green crab invasion in the Pacific Northwest. Dr. Yamada has worked in salmon research for Fisheries and Oceans Canada and taught at Woods Hole Marine Biological Lab, Wellesley College, the University of Oregon and Oregon State University. Her research interests include predator-prey interactions, the management of invertebrate fisheries, and the impact of introduced species on native communities. She has been following the green crab range expansion since 1998.

Registration is required. Select in-person or virtual ticket(s) when registering. For virtual tickets, the Zoom link will be shared after registration.

SEE IT THIS WEEKEND!

Riverbend Players launched the 2025 season with our first-ever Agatha Christie murder mystery—playing to huge crowds!

With six remaining shows, THE MOUSETRAP runs through March 16th at the NCRD Performing Arts Center in Nehalem.

THE MOUSETRAP by Agatha Christie
Directed by Randy Schultz:

A classic murder mystery occurs in Monkswell Manor, a guesthouse where a snowstorm traps a group of strangers.

As news arrives of a murder nearby, the guests realize that the killer might be among them.

Detective Sergeant Trotter arrives to investigate, but as tensions rise and secrets are uncovered, another murder occurs.

The play is famous for its surprise twist ending, and audiences are traditionally asked to keep the plot’s resolution a secret.

The Mousetrap holds the world record as the longest-running play, debuting in 1952 and remaining continuously on stage.

Monarch Butterflies need help

Go to the federal register/monarchs, please, and leave a comment to support Monarchs to be designated as a threatened species. Document 2024-28855(89 FR 100662)

I attended the Public Interest Environmental Law Conference in Eugene recently. The Monarch Butterflies are declining in numbers at an alarming rate because of complex habitat loss including the cutting down of their home place in Mexico to grow avocados. We need to do more to protect our pollinators. This will help.

Thank you, Karen Small
