Volunteers Needed For The Manzanita Open May 16, 17, 18

Every year in May, our non-profit organization, The Eugene Schmuck Foundation hosts The Manzanita Open golf tournament to raise money for our local communities. The event started in the 1990’s, but in 1997, local philanthropist Eugene Schmuck helped transition the tournament to ESF. This move assured that the funds raised stay right here, in the North Tillamook County area. Since taking over, we have given away over 1.8 million dollars to many, many wonderful organizations that help others, to our schools, and through scholarships for graduating senior and alumni.

Our 2025 event will be May 16, 17, and 18th with lots of fun golfing, hanging out by the burger tent, games, door prizes, and raffles. Which is where you come in!

We need volunteers to help us put on the event. We are looking for volunteers for the following times and events. If you want to enjoy the great outdoors and support a worthy cause we would love to hear from you. Please email manzanitaopen@gmail.com with the event(s) and time(s) when you can help.

PROTEST in Manzanita this week!

Please note May 17th, Saturday, in your “important things to do” datebook. This past week in Nehalem we hosted more than twenty-five people at our PROTEST in Nehalem. This might have broken a record in Nehalem, and we want to keep up our good work. OK, so MANZANITA this coming Saturday. Bring the usual, water, chair, layered clothing, and your positive spirit. Try to remember a can of food for the North Tillamook County Food Bank-go put it in your car right now. Oh, don’t forget your signs. We want to be sure we are not parking in the business parking lots. You can park along Laneda or in the First Security Bank parking lot as it is closed on Saturday. There is parking on Manzanita Avenue after you go past the grocery store to the west. And if you can invite others and take a car that is great. We are getting a great deal of positive responses from the people driving by. Please come and join us for this especially important PROTEST. A big thank you to all who have been on the line with us. We hope to see you at noon, on the corner of Hwy. 101 and Laneda and Manzanita Avenues.

too much anger

As I try to make sense of political commentary, I found an article from mid-2021 that describes what I’m seeing:

“The U.S. is in an information war with itself. The public sphere, where Americans discuss public issues, is broken. There’s little discussion – and lots of fighting. One reason why: Persuasion is difficult, slow and time-consuming – it doesn’t make good television or social media content – and so there aren’t a lot of good examples of it in our public discourse.”

A lot of what I’m reading and hearing seems like propaganda.

“Propaganda is anti-democratic because it influences while using strategies like fear appeals, disinformation, conspiracy theory and more.”

I think most people know that social media (now essential for social contacts) can be an unreliable source of accurate information:

“A lot of people use their social media connections and platforms to knowingly and unknowingly spread misinformation, disinformation, conspiracy and partisan talking points – all forms of propaganda.”

Social media sites employ rating systems to promote engagement.

“Social media platforms train users to communicate as propagandists: Recent research shows that platform users learn to express polarizing emotions like outrage through ‘social learning.’ Social media users are taught through app feedback – positive reinforcement through notifications – and peer-learning – what they see others do – to post outrage even if they don’t feel outraged and they don’t want to spread outrage.”

And so we end up using derogatory terms for those whose opinions we don’t like, and we resist any effort to understand their situations or credit them with any intelligence. I’m reading too much of that and the differences between sides seem irreconcilable.

I thought Kamala Harris was proposing policies to bring us together. Maybe there wasn’t enough time for the message to get through, or maybe we have just become so angry from all the propaganda that we’re not ready to resolve anything yet. I am hopeful the new Pope is a step in the right direction. He is in a position to influence possibly billions of people.

U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary to Conduct Courtesy Vessel Safety Checks in conjunction with National Safe Boating Week

National Safe Boating Week May 17-25, is the official launch of the 2025 North American Safe Boating Campaign. National Safe Boating Week promotes the value of life jacket wear by recreational boaters through the national theme, “Wear It!” U.S. Coast Guard statistics show that drowning was the reported cause of death in four out of every five recreational boating fatalities, and that 83 percent of those who drowned were not wearing life jackets.

There are many options for boaters when it comes to choosing a life jacket. When selecting a life jacket, a boater should check that it is U.S. Coast Guard approved, appropriate for the water activity, and fits properly. The best life jacket is the one you will wear.

Whether you’re going fishing or just enjoying a ride on the boat, make sure you’re prepared for the adventure by wearing a life jacket and knowing how to use required safety gear.

US Coast Guard Auxiliary Vessel Examiners from Flotilla 63 – Station Tillamook Bay will be conducting Courtesy Vessel Safety Checks on Saturday May 31, 2025 from 9am to 3pm at the Port of Garibaldi. Bring your boat or paddle craft by to talk with a qualified US Coast Guard Auxiliary Vessel Examiner and ensure you are ready for the North Oregon Coastal boating season.

Amazing antique Chinese table:
Happy dragons playing in the clouds with a flaming pearl that represents the world – an iconic Chinese motif, beautifully hand carved in rosewood. This image is deeply layered into Chinese culture, representing both the natural world and the pursuit of enlightenment and wisdom.
The table is 65” in length with a width of 25” and a height of 32”. The inset is 6” deep. Originally purchased for $2300 in the early 2000s , the selling price is $800 or best offer due to some small chipping and wear and tear. With some knowledge and TLC, this piece will lend itself to a beautiful renewal. The table has been used to display fine jewelry in a gallery setting with individual glass panels. This iconic 28 ft, dugout canoe, on a locked trailer, was absconded with from the Wheeler boat launch area on Friday I believe. This private property is invaluable to my future as I am about to set out on a Mississippi long, healing, journey called Two Canoes, One Dream. Handyman Needed for Washer Repair

I have a Samsung VRT washer. It stopped in the middle of a spin cycle and there was a burning smell. The internet says this could be as simple as needing a new belt. The appliance repair place I called told me that it could also be something more serious and I should just junk it and buy a new washer (it is likely 20 years old). However, I would hate to just dump it without trying to fix it, if the fix is as simple as replacing the belt. Do any handymen or handywomen out there know how to replace a belt in a washer and willing to do so? If it’s something more serious, OK, I can junk the washer. But if it’s just the belt, what a waste that would be! Repairing it would be so much more sustainable. Thank you.
