United Paws’ Cat of the Week: Marley

Submitted By: website@unitedpaws.org – Click to email about this post
Meet Marley, United Paws’ Cat of the Week

Marley is an indoor kitty who is adorned with a tail that curls over his back. He has luscious tabby markings and a sparkling personality to match. He gets along well with other cats and is quite adept at traveling with his humans. He is shy at first, but quickly warms up to new friends and acclimates easily to new surroundings.
Marley wakes up full of energy and loves playing “fetch” first thing. Like a dog, he will chase after a thrown toy and bring it back! His foster describes Marley as “a labrador in a cat body”! He even knows his name and will come when he is called! A pat on his side will get him going again, chasing and retrieving more toys. When he is not playing fetch, Marley enjoys chasing and catching bugs. Marley is curious, playful, and will provide hours of entertainment. After a good round of playtime, Marley is happy to lounge in a sunny spot in the house.
At the end of the day, Marley will gladly snuggle with you. He is an affectionate boy, happy to be near you, and at bedtime, he will look for a warm spot near your neck, near your feet or on your chest. Marley is ready to bring love and joy to his forever home.

Beautiful Custom Queen Murphy Bed

Submitted By: Rumblemailbox@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
Beautiful hardwood bed. I’ve used for many years. The picture is when the bed is open (I have used it as a regular bed, not closing it). The art work shown can be taken if you want, which accents the wood and our coastal area. When the bed is closed, a beautiful cabinet appears in excellent shape. The cabinet could be converted into a closet or other uses if you are not interested in using it as a bed. (The mattress and box spring are not included. I am very flexible on price. Call for more information. 650-464-1733

Celebration of life for Chuck McLaughlin Saturday Aug 9

Submitted By: barbaraandchuck@nehalemtel.net – Click to email about this post

Please join us next Saturday, August 9, at the White Clover Grange at 2pm for a celebration of life for Chuck McLaughlin.

Charles Lee McLaughlin was born in Bakersfield, California, on June 8, 1928 to Harold Winfield McLaughlin and Helen Loraine Seymour McLaughlin. He passed from this world on Valentine’s Day, February 14, 2025.

Chuck, a true Gemini, was a master of many trades—artist, musician, poet, writer, carpenter, genealogist, bbq website master, activist, spiritual seeker, and lover of beauty and nature. He could visualize the art or carpentry project he wanted to create in his mind and then make it happen.

But mostly it was being a father that filled his soul. His seven sons and one daughter were always in his heart.

His first family consisted of four sons; Craig Lee (1950-2016), Chris Carson (1952-1983), Carl Richard (1954-2024) and Charles Lee. Their mother was Joan Ardelle Hall (1931-2015). To Chuck’s deep sorrow, Craig, Chris and Carl preceded him in death.

Next came Paul Richard, born in 1968, whose mother is Jeanie Hall McLaughlin.

Chuck spent the last half of his long life with his third wife, Barbara Schramm McLaughlin and together they had twins, Mark Jacob and David Shannon McLaughlin. With this marriage came his only daughter, Erika Luella Gilman Branch, whom he helped raise from her earliest years. Having only boys it was both an honor and a challenge to parent a daughter.

Wrestling with the “Great Bambinis” (his first four boys), carrying young Paul on his shoulders down to the beach, and being Mr. Mom to Erika, Mark and David were some of Chuck’s joys of fatherhood. He was extremely proud of all his children and guiding them into adulthood was a sacred responsibility to him.

His strength, vibrant energy, determination, intelligence and ability to create carried him almost seamlessly through most of his 96 years. For instance, his vision
of being mortgage free saw him building a new house at the age of 75 with Barbara, Mark and David. Upon his arrival in Cannon Beach in 1975, looking around to see what wasn’t there, his vision led him to start Geppetto’s Toy Shoppe. When his son, Paul, was diagnosed with leukemia at the age of 3, his determination and love literally saved Paul’s life.

Some of the thirty plus paying jobs Chuck held in his life included, bucking hay, selling men’s clothes, picking cotton, grapes and tomatoes and taking tickets at a drive-in. He was a probation officer, teacher, credit manager, oil rough neck, life guard, bank teller, bus driver, and warehouse manager to name a few.

When he was 16 in 1944, with his mother’s permission, he joined the Merchant Marines and was a seaman on oil tankers, delivering fuel to American ships in the Pacific. Before the end of World War II he joined the Naval Air Corps where he was a radio operator.

His “nonpaying” jobs included KMUN programmer, one of the founders and “Rummage King” of Fire Mountain School, Wheeler City Councilor, Cannon Beach Planning Commissioner and BBQ website master for over 20 years (www.northcoastbbq.com). It was very important to him to give to his community.

He also loved giving away his art to friends and family. On medallions cut from ivory cue balls, he scrimshawed personalized nature images and made them into necklaces as presents. There are also a number of his symbolically carved walking sticks in the hands of others. When he could no longer walk, see or hear very well, he envisioned his last art piece that his son David put together after Chuck’s passing—Elk antlers given to him by son, Mark, with a dangling elk tooth he found on one of his nature walks.

Chuck composed over 50 Haiku. Of haiku he says, “Haiku to me is a verbal portrait of a non-verbal moment in time … a moment on occasion evoking an intuitive response transcending the obvious and, on occasion, providing a non-dualistic oneness with what is seen.”

ON WET RIVER ROCK
A WATER OUZEL DIPPING
DIPPING, DIPPING…SPLASH!

Music and nature were also a big part of his life. His love of music started in the 4th Grade when he was mesmerized by the school orchestra. Instead of walking through the auditorium to the restroom, he sat and listened so long his teacher had to come find him. He loved drumming and played the conga for many years before joining local bands Shy Jazz, playing a drum set, and the Sedona Fire Band with whom he played bongos and cajon. He also sat in often with the Tsunami Drummers.

As a young boy he lived in San Francisco near Golden Gate Park and spent many hours roaming there. When his family lived in Bakersfield, he explored the nearby desert country. In Cannon Beach, he got his nature fix wandering along Ecola Creek as well as hiking many other coastal trails.

Besides his wife, Barbara, and children, Charles, Paul, Erika, Mark and David, he is survived by daughters-in-law Hillary (Charles), Judi (Paul), Jackie (David) and Kate (Mark) as well as son-in-law Jason (Erika). He leaves behind 16 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, and 4 great-great grandchildren. He is also survived by 5 nieces and 5 nephews as well as numerous great and great-great nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents and sons, Craig, Chris and Carl, his siblings, Harold Winfield McLaughlin and Barbara Jean Petzolt and their spouses, as well as several nephews preceded him in death.

Chuck was an avid genealogist. To see his ancestors go to www.wikitree.com/wiki/McLaughlin-2367#Ancestors

New Manzanita City Hall and Police Station are a Reality

Submitted By: mkuestner10@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
Saturday a large crowd gathered to welcome the opening of the new Manzanita City Hall and Police Station. There was sunshine, excited chatter, great cookies and art-making courtesy of the Hoffman Center.
Introductory remarks were made, then the ceremonial ribbon was cut and the crowd got to wander the halls of the two new buildings–construction is simple, elegant and efficient. The walls of the front office are lined with old fir reclaimed from the former school, and the light fixtures in the front lobby are also from the school.
Our Police now have a state of the art station, evidence room, etc. The City Hall has a small conference room, offices and a spacious large meeting room where we can attend larger gatherings like City Council meetings.
Kudos to everyone who helped bring this 30+year dream into a gracious reality!

4 Michelin Tires for free

Submitted By: pangaeagaia@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
I kept these tires as they were too good, still, to leave at Costco. Even the salesman said I didn’t need new ones yet. They have at least 20,000 miles left on them! Internet says “many owners report achieving or exceeding the warranty, with regular maintenance”.
Originals on a 2017 Honda HRV, off rims (17″x7.5″), P215/55 R17 All-Season Michelin Primacy MXV4, 60,000 warranty (can’t find the warranty!).
Gently used by older person locally.
Please email if interested or to pick up, they are in a garage, in plastic bags…I still take care of them!

Hope Lives In You

In you and me…

We the People
A Genesis

Broker of treason and transparent crimes,
your promise and word mean nothing to you.
A flag, a bible, a stream of endless lies,
the art of what you are offering is clearly deceit.
Soon all will see you have lost your way, losing
the dream of America. So broken, you bring only
an abundance of self-loathing. In the turning,
the great play of capital and quid pro quo,
let us remember the dignity of the ordinary
patriot honoring an oath, that sacred promise
to follow and uphold the law. Standing together,
we will not, “…let you do it.”
Our hope, the uplifting of America will return,
privilege weakened, faith affirmed.
When you are taken down and behind bars,
you can heal what is broken or go down failing
in your own mad bunker, as the light of America
returns, the enduring dream, out of many one.

Hello Incredible BBQ Community!

I’m here to help a local teenager find her first car. Exciting times! She’s a super responsible and high-performing student who is saving up money from her job and excited to own her first vehicle.

Wish list:
– Low cost
– Low miles (a girl can dream!)
– Low recurring maintenance fees
– High fuel efficiency
– High safety rating

Seller financing would be ideal, though it’s possible she could pay cash upfront (depending on the price). Thanks in advance for any ideas!

In gratitude for this community,

Amy Kline Gage Celebration of Life- Pine Grove 08/08 From 5-70

Submitted By: laurabartels@live.com – Click to email about this post
Amy Kline Gage, formerly of Neahkahnie Mountain, Manzanita, Oregon, born in Seattle, Washington on July 7, 1943 and died on May 19, 2025 surrounded by family and friends at her home in Fillmore, California. She was 81. Amy is survived by her beloved husband John Gage, daughter Laura Kline Bartels and husband Bill; daughter Grace Kline; daughter Suzannah de Moll and husband Todd Hight; grandchildren Nico Kline Bartels; Hannah Kline Bartels; Matthew Kline Bartels; Luna Enriquez and her partner Adam Bristow; Evangeline Enriquez; sister-in-law Martha Wood; cousins Gilbry McCoy; Stephanie Birchak, and Karen Couch; many Cayman cousins; stepdaughter Lisa Gage Star; stepsons Chester and Ezra Anderson; stepchildren Judy, Jay, and Joe Kline.

Moving from Portland to Oregon Coast’s Neahkahnie Mountain in 1969 with daughter Laura and then husband Fred Kline, Amy and Fred built their own home by hand with no electricity. Amy opened the Rainbow Gallery, a fine art gallery in Cannon Beach, Oregon, until the death of Fred in 1978. Fred and Amy had daughter Grace in 1975 at home, and after Fred’s death, Amy had daughter Suzannah de Moll at home with spouse Kip de Moll. Amy moved with daughter Grace and Suzannah in 1986 to Mill Valley , California where she married her childhood sweetheart John Gage.

Amy was a Certified Yoga Therapist; a teacher of yoga classes at Tillamook Community College, in Cannon Beach and Astoria. Amy taught yoga students at the Rhinehart Clinic and Hospital; set up the program and taught yoga for Multiple Sclerosis, AIDS (hospice) and orthopedic and cancer patients at the University of California, San Francisco Dental School. She taught Yoga for Percussionists, Yoga in Christian Prayer at Grace Cathedral, Yoga for Children, Yoga for People over 53, Yoga in Christian Worship and Yoga for Incarcerated Women. Amy founded the North Coast Hospice in 19__; Amy was involved with Midwifery and delivered over 30 babies in the North Coast. Amy started the International College of the Cayman Islands in 1970 and was a member of its board for over 55 years; lifelong Episcopalian, she regularly attended services at St. Catherine’s By the Sea from her home in Oregon when they were originally held in a room behind the grocery store. She was thrilled that the parish eventually could build its own church.

Amy’s favorite events in life were those involving her husband, children, grandchildren and extended family and friends. She was a great mom. She loved shared dinner table conversations, talks of upcoming events or simple descriptions about the events of your day. She always gave thoughtful individualized gifts; she had such optimism about young people and their futures, and she had tongue-in-cheek nicknames for her towns on the Oregon Coast that always made us laugh. She remembered personal details and could greet you after a lengthy absence and carry on as if the distance and time never existed. Amy had a way of making you feel that you were the most important person in her world; she had a gift for including you in any activity and she made you feel at ease and a part of her family. Her legacy is the great energy she devoted to her family and friends and great success she had in introducing people to new concepts and inspiring them get involved and become active participants. Amy was a mentor to many.

A Celebration of Life Gathering of the Life of Amy will be held at Pine Grove Community House, 225 Laneda Avenue, Manzanita, Oregon from 5:00 pm-7:00 pm. Light refreshments will be served. In lieu of flowers, please bring a story to share of Amy’s impact in your life. An open microphone will be available as well as cards for your stories or notes. If you want to share a longer story or communicate with John, Laura, Grace and Zannah, please send it to AmyCelebrationofLifeStories@gmail.com.
