You can follow this link to watch the January 8, 2025 Manzanita City Council meeting. Congratulations to our newly-elected Mayor and those Councilors who were officially sworn in! ci.manzanita.or.us/city-council/
There were Interesting updates on the work to begin soonish to install new water infrastructure on Classic St., and beyond, the status of our New Police Station and City Hall, etc. It’s exciting that construction will hopefully enable the Affordable Housing Development proposed off Necarney City Rd. to proceed.
An update on the current cost of the odd lawsuit against the City of Manzanita by Randy Kugler, Laura Swanson and Will Stone: so far Manzanita’s legal bills are about $25,000. The City may have a positive resolution to the suit by mid-January (i.e. it is found to be without merit).
Also, the costs to the City of Manzanita so far for the Bond Issue on Monthly vs. Quarterly Water Billing that resident Kugler forced on the City is up to $36,000. The costs for this will be borne, ironically by the Water Fund.
It’s a shame that this combined $62,000+ won’t be available to help with Manzanita’s many serious priorities.

Building Resilient Connections Between Ecology & Community in Rockaway Beach, Oregon
Saturday, January 18, 2025, at 12:00 PM. North Coast Communities for Watershed Protection (NCCWP) invites you to St. Mary by the Sea Catholic Parish in Rockaway for a presentation by Master of Landscape Architecture (MLA) students from the University of Oregon (UO). Their research, Coastal Futures, focuses on climate change adaptation strategies for coastal communities in Oregon and is led by Ignacio López Busón, a UO Assistant Professor of Climate Change Resilience.
For the past three months, the students have visited and analyzed Rockaway Beach, meeting with local stakeholders to understand the values and challenges of our local community, including coastal erosion, sea level rise, deforestation, drinking water quality, and urban development. This presentation will showcase their research on sustainable coastal practices and explore paths for long-term resilience.
All community members are encouraged to attend to learn more about coastal sustainability issues and engage in a discussion about planning for a more environmentally and socially resilient future.
Free to attend. Bread from WolfMoon Bakery and soup from Manzanita Wild will be served.

Update on Appeal of Nedonna Wave Planned Unit Development

Update on the Appeal of the Nedonna Wave Planned Unit Development:
As most of you know, the RB City Council voted unanimously in December to deny the Appeal of the Nedonna Wave PUD. Thankfully, Oregon Shores Conservation Coalition has filed an appeal with the Land Use Board of Appeals (LUBA). Oregon Shores is getting legal help from the Crag Law Center.
We hope this action will help prevent further development in the area for several important reasons: First, this land is a wetland that deserves protection; second, the development would be built on top of an aquifer, which serves as Rockaway Beach’s backup water source, and could pose a risk of contamination; finally, Nedonna Beach has only one road (egress) which is already insufficient in case of emergencies such as a medical emergency, floods, fires, storms, ocean surges and tsunami. There are already 360 homes in this area, adding more would exacerbate this safety concern.
