Telling Words

the last two paragraphs from last night’s Heather Cox Richardson “Letters from an American.”

On the last day of his presidency, in his last speech, President Ronald Reagan recalled what someone had once written to him: “You can go to live in France, but you cannot become a Frenchman. You can go to live in Germany or Turkey or Japan, but you cannot become a German, a Turk, or a Japanese. But anyone, from any corner of the Earth, can come to live in America and become an American.”

He continued: “We lead the world because, unique among nations, we draw our people—our strength—from every country and every corner of the world. And by doing so we continuously renew and enrich our nation. While other countries cling to the stale past, here in America we breathe life into dreams. We create the future, and the world follows us into tomorrow. Thanks to each wave of new arrivals to this land of opportunity, we’re a nation forever young, forever bursting with energy and new ideas, and always on the cutting edge, always leading the world to the next frontier. This quality is vital to our future as a nation. If we ever closed the door to new Americans, our leadership in the world would soon be lost.”

Alack and alas, this will be the legacy of the Trump administration.

Letter to the Supreme Court of the United States

Submitted By: diwax54@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
Urging everyone to write SCOTUS… feel free to use this as template…

I am “Diane Weatherwax,” an American citizen. I am outraged that you continue to allow the Trump Administration and Elon Musk to destroy our country, our democracy, and the institutions that Congress created; Executive Orders cannot end this. It will take two-thirds of Congress to eliminate these departments. Yet the Trump administration is dismantling it all, and you do nothing to stop it.

The immunity ruling has hurt everyone. You must revoke it and uphold the Constitution that says NO ONE IS ABOVE THE LAW, and presidents are not kings.

GIVE US OUR COUNTRY BACK

Sincerely,

Diane Weatherwax

An Open Letter to Tillamook County Transportation District Candidates Jim Heffernan and Vern Ressler

Dear Jim and Vern.

You have my vote. I trust that your motivation to be on this board aligns with my wishes for the district. To be clear I want to see improvements in service, management, and operations. I want to see smart solutions. I want you to consider the environment. I want to see transparency and accountability. I want to see care and consideration for the individuals that rely on Dial-A-Ride and The Wave. Each one of them needs to be taken care of.

The candidates that speak on the idea that the district is doing great cannot make a difference. This is why my votes will go to you. You are aware. Making changes is impossible when one is unwilling to acknowledge that problems exist. Major problems exist and the voices to oppose them are small or have been intentionally limited. You will be in a position to speak for them. This is desperately needed.

I, personally, do not use the services provided by the district, but I care deeply for others that do. I have heard their stories of being left at the doctor’s office, or a ride that they waited six weeks on getting canceled on the day of their appointment, or them waiting at a bus stop for a bus that just doesn’t arrive. I have also heard the unhappy stories of staff and ex-staff. When people quit their jobs because they just can’t take it anymore, the problem is not the employees.

This letter is to ask you, once you’re elected, to please stand up and make a difference. Just going to board meetings and following the lead of management is not the job here. Representing the taxpayers that fund this critical service is the job. Please make it your personal mission to take care of our riders, the employees, and the environment. Please be courageous, vocal, and wise stewards for the county. Please make a difference.

Sincerely,

Yvette Clark

MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow delivered a masterclass in how incompetence can sometimes be democracy’s best friend in a scathing segment that perfectly encapsulates the first 100 days of Donald Trump’s second term.

With her characteristic blend of wit and meticulous detail, Maddow painted a picture of an administration that’s not just dangerous – it’s dangerously inept.

The Three-Act Tragedy (or Comedy?)

“There are three parts to this story,” Maddow explained, laying out what has become the defining narrative of Trump’s return to power.

“It’s Trump’s extremism, people saying no, but there then is this third thing, which has been the undercurrent to all of it.”

That third thing? A seemingly endless parade of “Oops” moments that would be hilarious if they weren’t so terrifying.

The Dictator Who Couldn’t Dictate

“We know he’s trying for the whole dictator thing,” Maddow observed with characteristic deadpan delivery. “No elections, no courts, no resistance, rule by terror, right?”

But as she proceeded to demonstrate, Trump’s authoritarian aspirations have been consistently undermined by his administration’s stunning incompetence.

The Greatest Hits of “Oops”

In what can only be described as a greatest hits compilation of governmental face-plants, Maddow detailed a staggering array of administrative blunders.

Here are just some of the highlights:

The 48-Hour Federal Freeze: Trump’s administration attempted to freeze all federal grants immediately after inauguration, only to reverse course within 48 hours when they realized what chaos they’d created.
The CIA Email Debacle: In a move that would make any intelligence officer cringe, the administration accidentally included hundreds of CIA officers’ names in an unclassified email to the White House.
The Nuclear Security Whoopsie: They accidentally fired the entire staff responsible for nuclear weapons safety, then desperately tried to rehire them.
The $8 Billion Math Error: The Department of Government Efficiency (yes, that’s real) claimed to save $8 billion when the actual number was $8 million – just a casual 100,000% error.
The Penguin Tariffs: In perhaps the most absurd example, the administration imposed tariffs on a remote island primarily inhabited by… penguins.
The Gift That Keeps on Giving

The hits just kept coming. From accidentally texting war plans to a journalist at The Atlantic to publishing hundreds of unredacted Social Security numbers (including Trump’s own lawyer’s), the administration seems determined to prove Maddow’s point about their incompetence.

A Curse and a Blessing

“Just because they’re trying to do really, really bad things,” Maddow noted, “doesn’t change the fact that they’re also just really bad at everything they try to do, which for this country is definitely a curse, but also in some ways a blessing.”

The segment perfectly captured the bizarre reality of Trump’s latest term: an administration with authoritarian ambitions but slapstick execution.

As Maddow put it, “It hasn’t been funny exactly. It’s too disgusting for that. But it has been the proverbial comedy of errors.”

The Bottom Line

While the country grapples with Trump’s attempts to dismantle democratic institutions, there’s a peculiar comfort in watching his administration repeatedly step on its own rakes.

As Maddow’s detailed catalogue of “Oops” moments demonstrates, sometimes the best defense against authoritarianism might just be incompetence.

The story of Trump’s first 100 days isn’t just about his extremism or the resistance against it – it’s about an administration that can’t seem to get out of its own way.

And while that might be concerning from a governance perspective, it’s proving to be democracy’s unexpected guardian angel.

VOTE YES for Neahkahnie Schools!

From Tide Pools to Textbooks: VOTE YES for Neahkahnie Schools!

Let’s talk about the Neahkahnie School District 56 levy, shall we? I know, another election, another “please, can I have some more?” from our local institutions.

But bear with me, folks, because this one’s a bit different. It’s about our kids, and let’s face it, they’re the only ones who can save us from a future filled with sentient AI and kale smoothies.

Now, I’ve heard the grumbles. “Taxes, taxes, always taxes!” you say, shaking your fist at the sky. I get it. We’re all trying to make ends meet, especially with those grocery bills that seem to double every time we blink. But consider this: a well-funded school isn’t just about textbooks and chalkboards.

It’s about investing in the future of our community. It’s about ensuring our kids have the tools they need to succeed, whether they dream of becoming astronauts, marine biologists, or, dare I say, even politicians.

This levy isn’t about fancy new gold-plated water fountains or hiring a personal chef for the cafeteria; It’s about maintaining the programs that make our schools great.

It’s about keeping our class sizes manageable, so our teachers don’t need a bullhorn to be heard. It’s about providing extracurricular activities, so our kids don’t spend all their time glued to screens, learning the latest TikTok dance moves.

Think of it as an investment in our local, coastal economy. A thriving school district attracts families, which supports local businesses, which, in turn, keeps our property values from plummeting faster than a soufflé in a hurricane.

Plus, imagine the bragging rights! “My kid goes to the best schools in the county!”

And frankly, a strong school helps keep our kids engaged in positive ways. Let’s give them opportunities to learn about marine biology, coastal ecology, or Dungeons and Dragons.

So, when you vote in May, remember the kids. Remember the future. And remember that a few extra dollars today can save us from a whole lot of headaches (and TikTok dance tutorials) tomorrow.

Let’s continue to give our kids the education they deserve, and maybe they’ll invent a machine that makes kale smoothies taste like chocolate. Vote YES!

Thank you everyone for helping us clean out the former Nehalem Bay House today! We were so happy to see so many things go back out to the community and find new homes. Once we’ve done some demo we’ll be hosting another giveaway day, including cabinets, plumbing fixtures, and more. Keep an eye out in a week or two’s time!

In the chaos, someone very kindly took a generator from the fire alarm room that was supposed to stay in place. This is the backup power for the fire alarms in case of emergency, and we didn’t mean to include it in the giveaway. If this was you, we would appreciate getting it back! No hard feelings though, it was chaos this morning…

Thank you BBQ!

New telescoping ladder 10’ ladder with 14’ reach

Submitted By: Artwithmisskaren@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
I just bought this ladder for $149.99 at harbor freight a few days back.
I needed a ladder with a full 17’ reach to change smoke alarm batteries in 18’ ceiling. I explained to the gal what I needed and she threw this one in the basket. It wasn’t till today when I actually read the box that I realized it’s no good for my application.
I can drive it back to harbor freight but if someone wants to give me just $140 (saving 10$) it’s in cannon beach and hen I don’t need to make the drive just for the ladder.
It collapses down to 31” so it’s an easy one to throw in a trunk, back seat or behind truck seat in the cab.
