Since the federal voting bill is now getting more media coverage and debate I have to point out the dangerous diversion too many have fallen into: that this is about voter identity verification. It is not, but it’s what supporters want us to think.
This is about states’ rights and responsibilities to hold elections. States, each using their own tested methods, already verify the identities of voters, and they double check to make sure election outcomes are fair (not to mention the legions of partisan lawyers watching like hawks). This is how it’s always been done because it was written into the Constitution to prevent a single king from controlling elections.
Our current king is unhappy with that.
