The thing about a new piece of writing is that it may feel done but in the days to come it will change in important ways. This piece is now 2 days old.
Together
Turning into another sunrise
with thoughts of my mother
and her beautiful gift, a silk
tie from Save the Children.
Almost weightless, it rests
draped over my shoulders,
a vestment and perennial vision.
Offering hope, white clouds
drift and pass as flowers rise up
in every color, a venerable tree
brings its sweet, ripening fruit,
the sun too offers what it can
warming a spring field where
two children are standing
together, joyfully tethered
to a kite and the sky in wonder.
One is dark the other is light.
As I return to remember and
recognize what is imperfect,
I cherish what continues to grow.
