I have walked down broken steps
into rooms where their harnesses
hung, motionless and deeply stained.
What I have seen I cannot unsee.
I will not forget these memorials
to slow torture, nor listen to the
repeating lies honoring our young
soldiers marketing their righteous
death. We all know and have now
witnessed the injustice of continuing
exodus and still hear voices
that were lost, taken for their dignity
and common sense. As we remember,
let us now welcome all the ancient
fears, awakening to the enduring call
to heal and abandon hate.
As this is done, days will come
when we shall no longer run
from the roots of war, turning away
from what will always be true:
We can open our eyes and see.
Thanks to each one of you for showing up,
doing what you can. Our work is only
beginning.
